I've learned to be more observant of the world as I go through it. I never saw a Peace Pole before Waymarking, and now I'm doing U-turns to go back and photograph them.

Yeah, me too!  Although I've only seen one 'round here, and it wasn't in the best shape.

A large eagle scupture in the Detroit Zoo is dedicated to Laura "Lollie" Winans.  She was one of two victims in a famous murder on the Appalachian Train in 1996.  If you've read "A Walk in the Woods", you've heard about the murder.  I haven't discovered her connection to the zoo or the area.

My just-submitted-not-yet-approved waymark in the Figurative Statue category.

Wow! I've walked past that statue dozens of times, and never knew that! I look forward to visiting you new zoo waymarks!

Re: What did you learn because of Waymarking today

I learned that waymarking is a great way to re-discover those interesting locations all around you which you never even really noticed before.  To me it has rekindled a desire to explore my surroundings and act like a tourist in my own town.  It has been so long since I have visited some of the places, that in a way it is like seeing them for the first time.  Also, it has definitely made me become more observant of locations as I drive anywhere, and all the much more interested in local history.

And a few things I've learned about which I had never heard of before waymarking are zinc headstones, Woodmen of the World, Tim Horton's, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Re: What did you learn because of Waymarking today

I've been waymarking since August 05, 2006  and geocaching since December 2001. I've not been very active in the forums because the two or three times that I did drop by and look I saw so many who were intolerant and unkind to each other.  What I learned today, is that it's because we don't get involved and resist the intolerance and unkindness of others that it flourishes.  Today, I did a little reflection, and decided that I will become more active in the community.  There are those who sometimes get jaded and full of themselves when they've been at it for awhile, and they feel entitled to capitalize on the mistakes of others in a harsh way for no other reason than to feel superior.

    I learned that today.

So I have resolved that this site can only get better if waymarkers who are willing to be ambassadors rather than bullys get involved. I am willing.

Re: What did you learn because of Waymarking today

Ive learned much since wm. I read about different wm every time I come here just to see places I havent been & would like to see  as well as what others say about places I have been. I've met several new people I wouldnt have otherwise & learned about little things in the area that arent in any tourist book. I've learned there are few corners of the globe that doesnt have something of interest, even if it something that is only appreciated in the eye of the beholder. I've learned that getting there is more than 1/2 the fun & the rest is sharing it with others who have the same general interest.

The biggest thing I HAVENT learned though is to curb my frustration when I cant find something, or cant figure out how to do something but I have learned how to 'ask'.

All in all its been a great ride & I look forward to each new adventure. 1 more thing is that I'm really glad I learned about wm. Thank you.   :)
