Redneck Parrotheads: SwEagle:Speaking as a female, it does seem to be more males than females that GC or WM. I guess my hubby is like your wives and totally not interested. We have to come up Geocouching or something similar for the spouses that don't want or have the desire for fresh air, insects, cuts and scrapes and fun exploring new territories. (I have to remember to bring the machet!!) So I am a loner in the aspect of CG or WM.
I'm new and just getting started, and still haven't found my first cache yet, but have a couple of WM already. I was not using the GPSr correctly (manually instead of clicking on the cache I wanted to find in my GPSr), thus the main reason for DNF, but I didn't log it as I blamed my inexperience rather than the hider! The good thing about it is that I found out now instead of being stuck out in the middle of nowhere looking for an eagle's nest!!
I travel around my area taking photos of nature, wildlife and whatever else strikes a pose! I only just found out about caching while researching for a GPSr, I need it to locate eagle nests that I will be monitoring this breeding season for the Audubon Birds of Prey. I thought it would be fun to try. Now, I'm stuck in limbo because the on/off switch broke on my GPSr and I am waiting for it to be repaired.
There are a lot of women in both games but, yeah, I think the majority are still guys. I've been referred to as "guy" before because someone just assumed. Where in Florida are you at? I need somebody to drag my butt away from work to do more GCing and WMing. :)

I'm in Port Saint Lucie on the Treasure Coast...not sure where North Port is. If you're close by I'd more than happy to drag your butt out and check out some caches and WMs!!

I'm about 20 minutes south of Sarasota and I'm moving back to Port Charlotte soon so tack on another 10 minutes. We're a ways away but it's not unreasonable. Give me a shout if you're ever in my neck of the woods. :)

I have a gorillapod and have used it to great effect. I'm drooling over RAM Camera Mounts now. I already have a sort of modularized system so that I can mount any two of the following on my dashboard: iPod, iPhone, 60Cx GPS, new Oregon GPS using RAM stuff...

TheBeanTeam: BruceS: chapterhouseinc:i have had several jobs that were 'waymark friendly'. no one ever really asked why i took my gps/camera everywhere and took pics of all sorts of things. and there are a few categories that are not loner friendly at all (photo cutouts)--posting or visiting.
Get yourself a Gorillapod and every category is friendly.
Great, I shouldn't have looked. Now I want one...or two.
Yeah, me too! At least I can by on one at $40.

Interesting. I didn't go over it thoroughly, how does it mount to your dash?

The RAM mount stuff is modular. You can buy them in whatever configuration you need. My existing mounts are suction cup mounts because my Honda Element has a wonderful smooth area on the dashboard. But they also have magnetic mounts and rail mounts or handlebar mounts.
I will probably get a magnetic mount. I doubt I'll take any photos from the middle of the dash with my "good" camera.

After "venting" on another post, I thought I would answer a question in a positive in another.
Yes, I am conditionally a loner. But to explain, I almost have to explain why I started waymarking in the first place.
Waymarking for me is a way to focus what I am doing. For years, I thought it was awesome to take GPS coordnates of items, so that you had reliable means to get back there or communicate the precise location of a place. My particular interest happens to be historical and archeological sites. I was having problems finding petroglyphs, so I found this site many years ago. I would look back and forth from time to time, but I never posted until the bug caught me a little more than a year ago.
My family gets anoyed at me when I waymark, but I particularly enjoy waymarking when I am out of town on business. Not to sound over-the-top, but it keeps me occupied and happy. I spent over four months this year in Oklahoma this year, and have countless numbers of waymarks to post. So again, I sit here in my living room "virtually" alone.
Waymarking has really made me smell the roses at some of the historical sites. Now not only do I search out markers, I really get in depth when I type them up for posting. But it does leave me alone more often than not.
------------
On the otherside, reading waymarks, and particularly the forum, I get to reconnect. But thanks to BruceS, I will be looking for the Gorillapod... be warned not to get the cheap knockoff at Walmart.

ijeep:Interesting observation...
There was a guy in the MS geocaching forums that asked if anyone waymarked. He got a lot of the "it's just McDonalds".....
I pointed out if waymarking contributed to GC.com find numbers, then alot of the folks that "hate" Waymarking would become power Waymarkers (even logging the dreaded McDonalds's)
But I also pointed out that geocaching has a real sense of community that Waymarking does not.
Why is that? Why are there no Waymarking Events?
I just checked the 141 waymarks I have in Mississippi and not a single one is a McDonalds.... none are even the commercial department. Edit - Of the 776 Waymarks in Mississippi a total of 5 are McDonalds. Thus they are dismissing 99.5% of all waymarks in their state - end edit Actually I have the opposite feeling about community and waymarking. My feeling there is more of one worldwide community with waymarking whereas with geocaching there are 100s if not 1000s of communities. In waymarking I communicate with people all over the country and the world, with geocaching most of the communication is local (though in the "old days" of geocaching there was more communication in other areas because people had to travel more to find more caches than they do now) The reason that you don't see waymarking events is that there really is no great concentration of waymarkers in a geographic area. For that reason I think it would be good if waymarkers made it a point to make contact with other waymarkers when they travel into their area. (I am remiss on this myself)

This topic came up at an event this morning, by one curious geocacher that decided to follow my suggestion and have a look at waymarking. He was genuinely asking what the attraction was, and as the usual rogues gallery of cachers again listened to my explanation I did notice they seemed to be more receptive. It went like this.
No argument, geocaching is the primary drive for a vast majority of people. Consider that the caches we just did are good, as they were a walk in the woods to regular sized containers taking about 5 minutes to walk to. But we all know that there are many times where we are pulling into a parking lot to lift a lamp skirt and get a film can. Do you think that is more enjoyable than visiting an historic site where you read a plaque or see an interesting location? Of course not. and yet people are quite happy to seek out caches that they don't like and then tell everyone that they don't like those kinds of hides.
At that point the curious cacher said how much they do enjoy the history that they've learned from geocaching. Others chimed in that waymarking is just like virtual caches and that there are good ones and not so good.
I returned to my talk and said that people can be selective in what they choose to seek out. But it seems odd that people would choose to look for hide-a-keys in guardrails instead of seeing special places.
I ended off by saying that both games are just like a video store, and when I go to one I make sure I look in the genres that I enjoy. Renting a Western when you don't like them seems silly. But if you like History, then filter.

there arent enough of us. and most of 'us' still have more of the 'me' mentality than the 'we' one.....

This is the reason you have a Waymarking Sticker. If you have plans ahead of time you can arainge a meeting--i met Marine Biologist as we spent an hour or 2 WMing the Jville area.
By prearrainging the meeting, we had #s, and when i called she happend to be just down the street from where we were.
note: some WSS might be more difficult to find, depending on the variables.

Hmm. I'm not so sure about that. I think forming groups, creating categories, and waymark reviewing are pretty good demonstrations of a 'we' mentality. BruceS:If you have plans ahead of time you can arainge a meeting--i met Marine Biologist as we spent an hour or 2 WMing the Jville area.

That's cool, chapterhouseinc. How did you work out who-gets-to-waymark-what when waymarking together?

When BQ visited, I took him around to some places where there were things that he normally wouldn't get in his home area, and might be hard to find around here without here. For example Michigan Centennial Farm, Michigan Historical Marker, a JFK site.
If I had a heads up for another visit, I would hunt down potential waymarks for them too.

Yeah! That was awesome! One of my favourite WM memories is that evening!

ctd: i saw her WSS in my 'list of things'. i sent her a message about a week ahead of time. we exchanged plans/#s. i called when i knew we were in town. it was more of a we just left 'x'(Ft Caroline?), heading to 'y' (wally complex), ok, we can meet up at 'Z'.
turns out 'Z' was a paintball field she just posted that wasnt there anymore....some small WM talk, log my WSS, log hers, and she doesnt cache much and didnt take the bag of bugs i tried to hand over....
now, never been marking with anyone, other that the better half, but she tends to stay in the car or sit on a bench and bemoan all the walking and taking pics i do....
and we all (the local WMers) make it a point to have a short talk at the caching events--you know, slink off to the corner to discuss that other 'McDs' game.....
