    Re: Waitmarking??

Well, now I'm scratching my head a bit. Nothing has been waymarked in my neck of the woods since 2006. Now since I started to waymark Sir William Johnson's Fort in the fort catagory another waymarker has the fort list in the National Register of Historic Places. That fort and another one up the road and Johnson Hall all popped up yesterday. I feel like I better get to waymarking before all of the NRHP spots are taken. It appears that maybe I shook another waymarker out of the wood work and he's trying to get all of these spots before I WM them myself. Well I suppose there's 1,000's of spots to choose from. I can't get them all myself. Its definately good to see there's another waymarker close by. Now maybe I'll start getting some visits soon. Swizzle

    You've got it!

There has been a time or two when someone traveling through grabbed a few waymarks in my backyard, and I've done the same.  If it is a waymark that is somehow special to me, then I try to make sure I get it posted.  Only a few times have I "lost" a waymark that I really wanted.

The truth is, at the moment, there really are thousands of waymarks to do.  Of course, if one is interested in only a few things, and it is one of the more popular categories, then one might become frustrated.   For instance, a covered bridge fan has posted a large percentage of New England covered bridges.  In some states it's hard to find a state historical marker that hasn't been done - tough if one is trying to fill in the grid.

Another thing that helps is that we have overlapping categories.  So, one site may have been posted to only one of several cateogries for which it qualifies.   So, maybe you can find another category for those NRHP sites.

And, there are always visits to log.  I need to do this more when I cross paths with existing waymarks.  But, it can be an important way to add to a waymark, particularly the photo gallery.

So, I give a shrug and go on to the next one.  There is more than enough to go around.  And, I've got enough in my list waiting to be posted to keep me busy for a long time.

If anyone wants to come help waymark Korea, you're more than welcome!

    Re: Waitmarking??

Those overlapping catagories can really get complicated. Well at least there is 3 more waymarks in my area that I can log. I already have the historical sign accepted and waiting on approval of the fort itself as a fort. He just WM the NRHP catagory of the fort. I'm also going to try to get the same fort listed under pre-victorian buildings. By putting out waymarks now I'm just asking for other waymarkers to hit my area. It'd be nice to run into another waymarker or two well trying to set up a waymark or 12. I just started logging cemeteries and now there's sub catagories to that as well. Centerians, life's cut short, mosulim's, hobbies crafted in the stone. Its quite a bit to try to remember well I'm out looking for these places. twice no I've missed a benchmark and I was feet away from them and never even realized it. I'll try to stick with the subjects that I like to submit and try to get as many as I can well this area is still a blank slate. I can't even go to the store now without taking detours on the way home looking for waymarks. Today I drove into a cemetery and there was a state trooper hiding behind a mosolium?!? You can see the road from where he was parked but he wasn't out far enough. He looked like he was hiding out all together. Really weird but what can I say or do? Well I guess I better get my camcorder plugged back into my computer if I'm gonna hit 50 waymarks this week. Swizzle

    Re: Waitmarking??

state trooper hiding behind a muslim? well, they can do what they want....

you might want to print out the complete category list to carry with you.....mark off the ones you get.....then in looking to post/visit one you have yet to cross off you might find others you never heard of....it helps that it is in the tree format--newest/ABC really doesnt help.

i know i posted (acquired) an icon long ago, but when i got a n00b started here i posted a few so she would realize that 'hey, i can post those too'.....i think it was something like a basketball court (run of the mill item)....

you can be amazed at how many cross posts you can squeeze out of a location (see the Dry Tortugas, am i missing any?).....

someone posted a pic (was it bruce in the old forums) that had over 10 marks in the frame (in old school 'no categories' beta).....isnt that one of the photo goals to see how many different waymarks you can fit in the same picture?

i am sure i would go crazy if i was a n00b and had to grasp the 900+ categories at one time. posting would come secondary to visiting if you were lucky enough to be in one of 'our' areas......i have enough trouble adding them as they appear now, muh less try to get the others i have yet to post/visit.....

and believe me, with many categories it is much easier to visit that post (#1: you dont have to research [and the historic marker is ahead X on the right], #2: you can get more when most of it is already known [ie: cross post that, this one wasnt posted, turn around])

anyway, mausoleums are not my thing. i got the icon and many pics waiting on someone else to post, as a visit can sometime be better than a post.

i dont know that ive ran into and 'staties' in my waymarking, though i have posted/visited several at patrol offices.

and i got out of my way to find (and spend too much time in) cemeteries. now where is that death mask........

    Re: Waitmarking??

My wifey thought she saw 2 death mask today on a couple of headstones. They were carvings of saints. I told her that death mask are pretty rare. Right now I'll keep the list at home. If I am on a long distance trip then I might bring along a print out to maximize the amount of waymarks I want to post. Right now there's quite a few things I won't way mark just yet. I don't want to completely saturate the area with just my wamarks. As it is right now my area just went up to 49 new waymarks in just the past couple weeks. 46 are from me and maybe more. I'll have to see if any of the other 8 got approved yet. For now waitmarking has taking on a slightly new meaning. I'm gonna post as many WMs as I can well I wait for others in my area to catch on and start posting. Swizzle
