Great stats, by the way is it know approximately how many members there are in waymarking?

Re: A Number of Ways Updated

    i will say no.

and ask how you define 'member'.
    posted 1 waymark
    visited 1 waymark
active on the website {insert time frame]

some members posted 1 waymark in 2005 never to come back. some visit 1 waymark never to come back. some that posted 800 waymarks in 2005 still log on to view visits to their marks.

'last date logged in' really does not mean that much other than i looked at WM.com (while signed in) that date.
maybe i cast a vote in a group matter. maybe i clicked to see if a mark visit log has an image [wouldnt it be wonderful if the images were included in the visit notice email].
maybe i forgot the phone number to my local pizzahut/pet store/etc....and i know that the easiest way for me to find it is to do a google search.

    Original Visits

I have this thing in my head where I cannot visit my own waymark. To me it is too weird. I prefer to only log "original" visits for lack of a better word. Probably a derivative of my OCD :0)

I often wondered if it were possible to write a program which could scan all waymarker visit lists and count original visits only, excluding those visits to waymarks already owned by the visitor. I know how many I have as I have never visited my own, so that number is still "pure". (not that everyone else's visit aren't pure..they are, they are!!!) I wonder where I would be on that list.

I have been thinking about logging my own recently, but as I near 3000 (can you believe it?), It would take too darn long.

    Re: Original Visits

    well, on the search function:

    you could say:
-display all marks visited by chapterhouseinc
-exclude all marks posted by chapterhouseinc

(or alternatively you could take my visit count and subtract my post cout--though it is currently inaccurate cause i have more than 50 marks in the 'approved marks to visit' folder....)

as mentioned elsewhere i do this because 1) it dates back to excluding your visits was the only way to filter a search result and 2) this isnt geocaching

posting is nothing more than sharing with the world, and you visited it to post it.

what about multi visits? until recently you only got 1 visit, so i posted comments for return trips. but now comments dont accept photos, so you have to log another visit.

    Re: Original Visits

I also do not log my own creation visits but it is only because I found the creation visit a wast of time.

I had logged all of my own visits as mentioned by chapterhouseinc because it was the only way to filter in the early days of waymarking. I took a while one day and deleted all of my visits and now post visits only when I return to a location on a subsequent visit.

Visits are different than finds so a waymarker logging their own waymark using a creation visit is fine by me and I will defend the practice even though I no longer do it.

Even though you can now visit a waymark more than once the visit tally only counts the first visit as far as I can tell so additional visits are also fine in my view and I have made a few secondary visits when I had new photos for a particular "cool location".

So my visit count would be more than double if I had visited all of my own. Given the fact the sight cannot sort creation visits, visits at later dates and visits to another persons waymark a list would be inconclusive just based on the current totals.

Well, you could invent a new term , say WayBlob.  Then you could define it quite precisely, say:  "A WayBlob is a GS member who has visited or posted or approved a Waymark in the past year."

Can you tell how many WayBlobs there are?

Hmmm.  That doesn't account for WaySockBlobs though does it?

Now that I'm in the top 10 contributors in Arizona, it's time to update the blog.

There's still some numbers that I'd be curious to know:

    • Posted=0 and visited=0; possibly a geocacher-only or someone with minimal curiousity. (Someone once registered, just to send me an E-mail!)

    • Posted>0 or Visited>0; someone who participated, at least once. (how may waymarkers ever)

    • Visited>10 or Posted>10; someone who took a liking to waymarking activity, enough to try it

    • Visited>25 or Posted>25; someone who waymarked enough to achieve a medal in their profile.

The last two would give an indication of how many people like or participate in waymarking. What does this number look like compared the advertised 3-4 million geocachers?

On another topic, I was thinking / dreaming of a new way to view your own personal waymark grid. It would be interested to sort the grid by categories within department. Think of it as the grid arranged in the same order as the full category list. What this would show is the clustering of areas the you waymark/have waymarked in. For example, I might expect most waymarkers to have gaps in the icons in the state historical markers, while they maybe be solid in the restaurants or churches area.

Just display the grid in rows of 20 as today and let the items wrap-around. This grid would be less static and change when new categories are added, but that's OK. Keep doing your waymark bingos on the old grid. The alternate grid would make it easier to find those unwaymarked categories that you might be interested in hitting.

Re: A Number of Ways Updated

Thanks Bruce, I love seeing the stats, I thought maybe I'd make the top ten in MN, but not quite, I'm approaching the numbers though, so maybe next time. Do you know how many total waymarkers there are, regular and premium members, well got to go waymark some more Minnesota sites so I can make the top ten

Re: A Number of Ways Updated

Another idea: For the grid waymarkers, how about lists of waymarkers ordered by number of different categories waymarked, visited, and waymarked+visited. i.e. How's your grid compare?

Maybe some people should not be such pains and realize some people have other priorities (like work) and that each update take more than time (several hours) than is is available.

There are a lot of us with the ability to help out, if thats the direction you want to go. Personally, I'm a whiz with pivot tables.

The BLOG was a gift to us, and if what we had was all we would ever have, I'd be happy for what we had. Managing expectations is always an important step in a project. I'd rather know what to expect no matter what the news was.

alternatively, they could add these types of stats to the site, but some of the counters arent correct. and any word on when they will fix the current stat calculations?

Fabulous, Bruce!!!  We all appreciate your time and hard work!

Just a question.  Is it possible to get a number for the total unique contributors?  How many different people have created at least one waymark??  Any guesses?   Hey, how about a pool?   Prize will be an uncategorized waymark from Korea to add to a category. LOL
