    New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

A new group has been created to waymark Kinetic Sculpture. This includes Mobiles, Wallables, Gyros, Wind Art, or other art that moves. The main exception would be Rolling Ball sculpture and can be waymarked separately.  The Moving Artists group is open for officers and this topic is open for discussion.  For these types of sculpture, there may be a little overlap with the Abstract Sculpture category, but there shouldn't be too much.
    -------------
This group manages the "Kinetic Art & Sculpture" category. Kinetic art is art that contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, a motor or the observer. Kinetic art includes Mobiles, Wallables, Gyros, Wind Art, and other art that moves.

Alexander Calder and George Rickey pioneered kinetic sculpture.
The motion of the work can be provided in many ways: mechanically through electricity, steam or clockwork; by utilising natural phenomena such as wind or wave power; or by relying on the spectator to provide the motion, by doing something such as cranking a handle.

    Examples:
"Untitled" Mobile by Alexander Calder - National Gallery of Art East Building, Washington DC
Windmark - Quail Lake Park - Colorado Springs, CO
Fish Dance at Bear Creek Parkway
"Double Excentric Gyratory" - San Francisco, CA
    Questionable, maybe yes:
http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM4DQ4 It's hard to tell is this structure requires a person to interact with it, or if there's a set choreography like Bellagio

    Not Included:
    Whirlygigs bought from a store

What is the status of this category?  Have you brought it to a vote? I would be very interested in helping this become a category. I have found several kinetic art pieces and have waited for this category to become 'live.'

    Thanks for the update,

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

Are any of the Officers or Leader active in this group? I have sent individual email to each of the officers and leader with no reply. So I am hoping they see this in the forums. I would really like to help get this category going.

    Thanks,

Looks like all have signed in in the last two days. I wonder if there was an email glitch?

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

We've decided to try to get this category moving along (OK, bad pun!) and have submitted a new category, Kinetic Sculpture and Art, to peer review. I would kindly ask that those who have posted here and other who are interested take a minute to review and [hopefully] vote Yea on the category. BruceS and Max and 99 are the current Officers.

Thanks sooo much for your support.

I've put in my vote, with the recomendation that storebought windchimes also be excluded. I've already got my first location in mind. Great category, Can't wait to see all the submissions!!

I have one in mind too but it is in a different city. I think this will be a very interesting category.

    Best of luck.

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

Hi, I'm the owner of the original Kinetic Category/group. There was ZERO interest in this category a year ago so it sat on the back burner forever.  I switched email providers 2 weeks ago and still haven't revised all my geocaching & waymarking filters so some more important emails have fallen through the cracks.  And for some reason I wasn't subscribed to get updates on this forum thread that I created (I thought that was a default).  So I'm sorry that you had to re-create the category, I would have given you admin rights to the existing one.  I'm a little disappointed that you emailed me once 9 days ago and the next time I logged on, I see your category in peer review.  I'm also thrilled that you had the time and put forth the effort to make it happen so quickly, I just wished you would have tried to contact me and/or the group more than once.  That said, I hope the category passes peer review, and I plan to join the new group.

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

I think 9 days was a reasonable amount of time to wait for a response.  I'm looking forward to this category getting started because there are some examples of moving sculptures in Melbourne I'd like to share.

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

I am sooo glad you sent me an email and joined the group. I have been sending emails to all the Officers about every two-three months asking about the status of this (Moving Artists) group and the Kinetic category. I have never received a reply from anyone. Then I thought to post in the forums. Again, no reply. I saw that you and the officers had been logged into the Waymarking site, so I figured that the group had died due to lack of interest. TheBeanTeam also noticed that all the officers had recently logged in. I contacted BruceS and asked about the courtesy and protocol of starting a group to get this category moving. He said go for it. So I went for it. I was not trying to upstage you; but since no one from the Moving Artists group got back to me, I went forward.

I truly hope there are no hard feelings as that was not my intention. It may have just been a case of lost emails - but I did email everyone - not just you. Please accept my heartfelt apologies if I have offended you. That was never my intention. I just wanted to get the category to a vote and (hopefully) approved.

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

I do not view that anything wrong was done.  Previous group was created a year ago.  No category was forthcoming.  Contact was attempted to the previous officers.  Forum post was made to see if there was interest in the category.  No response received  from previous group thus we went forward with the category.    Creating a group does not reserve the idea forever... if that was the case I would have created groups for every fast food and commercial establishment and those categories would never have seen the light of day... I would sit on the idea forever. Smile

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

yes, but now a group is wasted (am i right that it isnt that easy to change a group name, and, thus purpose).

but then, cant the groups be sorted differently?

i have always disliked the 'open enrollment' function. let them join the group. that is what officers and promotion are for--to hand select those with authority. how can you promote when you havent let anyone join?

cant there be more group search dynamics?

-groups trying to create a category (need officers or description/variable development help)

    -groups with a failed category

-Groups that need officers (in the event that someone is on probation, or they desire some new/fresh faces

but, wait those also sound like forum sections too.

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

Just a quick note to let everyone know this category has passed!! Thank you so much for voting 'Yea.'

I am reviewing and incorporating many of the excellent comments given by the folks who voted. I am trying to have this category active by this afternoon-evening (Saturday, Feb. 20th).

I am including links to examples and modifying or deleting unnecessary/duplicate wording.

Again, thanks so much for your support,

WooHoo, I'm currently working on my first Waymark for this category. I just got an email from the artist with some extra details.

On another note, would a Wave Organ fit this Category. It's a sort of sound sculpture?

If not it would fit in Musical Instruments I think.

    Re: New Cat: Kinetic/Moving Sculpture

I had initially thought about including sound sculptures until further research and comments from other Waymaker's noted the categories of Musical Instruments; Outdoor Wind Harps and Bells. So I removed the sound option (although a sculpture may make sound when the wind blows - the sound it not the primary feature of the art).

Let me know if you have problems getting the Waymark accepted in another category and I'll take a look at it.

    Take care,

Well, it's already listed in Roadside Attractions, so I can always log the visit, but I think it may also fit well in other categories. The instruments category sounds good.
