Re: Abandonned Categories Hall of Shame - Pedestrian Suspension Bridges

This is the big reason I thought it might be a good idea to find a way to promote a "co-leader" to these groups, with full priveledges.  Someone who can make decisions to promote members, etc.  If the current leader doesn't get the hint after having a "mentor",  then the "group" could go ahead with whatever "ousting" needed to be done. I've submitted waymarks to a couple of categories  that fall into what TBT is talking about.  One member...not the leader...keeping the category viable.  Perhaps in that instance, promoting that individual to "co-leader" would make sense.  They obviously care about the category.  Then decisions would be back in the hands of "Us Users"  and the "democratic process" would be alive and well in waymarking.

Anything wrong with doing away with the edit permission altogether and giving every officer edit ability by default?

Re: Abandonned Categories Hall of Shame - Pedestrian Suspension Bridges

Personally no. I can see where some category creators may have a fit though.

There is always a bit of a concern that someone "might go in and mess it up".  In my experience group members have always been respectful and courteous when it came to changes regarding categories.

Opening the edit to all may be a way to solve a portion of the issue and I am not against it but others may have strong opinions regarding the edit that I haven't thought of and that should be considered.

Sounds good to me. But I generally tend to trust the people in my Groups.

    Cool BQ

As of today, I have been waiting two weeks for Exact Replicas to approve. They have four officers.

As long as I'm here, I'll also mention that Specific Veterans Memorials is closing in on that. Waiting ten days on three officers there.

I even canceled and resubmitted both of those just to see if I could wake someone up. No response.

Re: Abandonned Categories Hall of Shame

yea, ive had to wait on ER a few times.

recently SVM wads idle, but one of the officers was approving other categories.

i have an issue with closed membership....ok, youre trying to create something, use your closed group. once you become a live category, you are now an open group......

that way, those that like the topic can be groupies. then when issues arise (noone approving) you at least have a pool of applicants from which you can select the name you want to help out.....

i know im keeping several categories afloat, but they arent that popular. and even with membership open there arent any groupies to promote. the real issue is when i post something. i get to watch it in the que for however long it takes, as opposed to just forgetting about it till it gets approved a few months later....

Have you tried contacting the officers? That usually works for me.

I will, but I thought some more focus was necessary on this abandonment/delay issue. Seems to me the entire Officer Corps of a given group being out of pocket at the same time for a long time needs fixing.

If you were as nasty to them as you were to me, Fivermont, you would still be waiting! On the other hand, being a member of a group isn't all that much fun because one never knows what is going on and - there is no way to help. I've made several persons officers so there is always someone around to help out! And, it is more fun for them!

Sorry, but I don't recall ever being nasty to anyone here. Perhaps you could expand?

That would be best to be taken off line and not here in the forums.

    I fully agree.

But since the accusation was made for all to see, I figured I was entitled to at least one (polite) public response.

When I have contacted officers in the past, I have found that often one or two people are actually doing all the reviewing, and the others don't realize that they are actually needed when a need actaully arises.  In low volume categories this seems to compound, becuase people aren't used to looking.

So, perhaps there should be some sort of participation requirement. If you don't approve something every so often, you're out as an officer. That, I'm sure, would probably bring up the issue of officers in general, and whether a group can afford to boot one out.

Then again, if an officer isn't participating, why be an officer in the first place, unless it is just to meet the requirement to have a group?

I have advocated for some form of this in the past.

3 months and not signing in should be fair but if they wanted to error on the side of caution 6 months. Anything but what we have now with categories that are hamstrung by AWOL members.

My personal example... I'm an officer in Mauseleums. Thats JIMBOBWE's cat, and he is usually right on top of any approvals that come in. Even though I'm on daily, I might let one sit for a bit so he can approve it. So. if I were only on twice a week, and I skipped one the first time I saw it, and JIMBOBWEs computer was broke down, it might be a week before something got approved.

As an aside, some may notice my usually horrible typing to be somewhat worse than usual. No, I haven't broke my hand or any such thing. We are only partway through our move, and I'm typing on Mr. Globtrotters laptop in a dimly lit room, where I can't see my fingers. I should be back to my usual bad typing any time now.

Don't all officers have equal approval authority?

It's not a matter of authority, as my perception of other peoples preferences. My other cats I wouldn't let sit, unless I didn't have time to write a proper response.

ok, i got several to list (forts, 3 in que/SVM, again, 27 in que)

why cant there be a button on the group page--instead of having to write a note to 'each member'--that sends a note to all of the officers, TPTB and sets up some sort of timer system (such as voting) that until the mark gets approved the nots keep going out.....after a certain time TPTB can 'reorganize' the group somehow....

I agree 100%. A single "Send Message" button that contacts all officers instead of writing to one at a time.

    - Is this the button you are looking for ??? You can send messages to all Officers if you have permission from the Leader. (If not tell them to give you permission)

I think they are talking about instances where they have a waymark waiting to be reviewed in a category they are not a group member of. If you want to contact the officers of the group you must email each individually.

    yes, precicely.
i am not a member of the group. i dont know who the main reviewer is to send a message to. and its a simple message: review marks in your category(ies).

(um, i just got 1 of the 27 approved)

we have a cache needs attention option, what about a category needs attention [category might need more/new officers] button?

    Me too.

    Look at this category.

    Literary Sites

It' officers has had one sign in in 2009...back in May. The leader last signed in just over a year ago.

I had a user contact me asking if I could help because he ran into the category support group. Alas there is no help that I could offer.
