I was out waymarking today (I really need to take it easy. I am getting so many ideas) and another category idea occured to me. I wondered if there would be any interest in a Historic Re-Enactment category. I was thinking originally of Civil War Re-enactments but I wanted to be more all enclusive for the global scene. Any interest?

I think that it is a interesting idea for a Category.  Fort Vancouver has a Fur Rendezvous once a year, I believe.

I just started the group Historic Re-enactments so anyone interested, please join. I would love to have people from the U.S., Canada, Europe and other parts of the world that have re-enactments specific to time periods taht are important in their histories.

Too bad this wasn't a little sooner we just had a Civil War re-enactment in town this weekend. I think this is a good idea.

I'm not trying to be a  party pooper, but temporary, non-static waymarking categories are fickle can result in disappointment. Re: Quilt Shows.  Not that it's not possible; for say  Kissmobiles and  art vehicles.  I just wanted to give you fair warning.  Maybe the Quilt Shows managers can give you some lessons learned.

I don't see it being any different from  Medieval Festivals and they picked only one "Re-enactment"  for their Category.

I am a Living History Re-Enactor myself.  While re-enanctment can be conosidered an event, such as an annual Voyageur History encampment, it can also be a place--I guess I have in mind Living History Villages and other kinds of Open Air museums.  Even events that are only held for a period of some days often are held at the same place, such as re-enactments of Civil War battles that are always held at Gettysburg on certain dates.  I would say that if something is Living History re-enacted, and it doesn't occur year round, then dates when it takes place should be listed.  As Jake39 said, Renaissance faires do have their own category.  Our state's Ren Fair only occurs over a period of 6 weeks each summer and fall, but is in the same place.  Same thing with Living History programs at other historical sites around our state...they may only run in the summer.  I know that Colonial Williamsburg goes year round, but most Open Air Museusm do not have programming and re-enactment in the off season.  Probably in order to log something for this kind of waymark, you have to be advised when re-enactment is scheduled to occur, and go when there is programming, in order for the Waymark to count as being logged. 

My thought is that it would be no different than Hot Air Balloon Festivals. We are home to a re-enactment that has been going on for 17 years at the same time every year so dates would have to be a requirement in the category. In doing my research (because I wanted to ensure it didn't overlap with Renaissance festivals) Renaissance festivals focus more on fantasy that historical accuracy. I think this is viable category that has worldwide possibilities, not just in the U.S..

But what I was pointing out was that the Quilt Show Group thought theirs was not different than other categories too.  And they thought they had support in the forums.  My opinion is that only the supportive folks chime into the forums.  This group needs to think about the people who vote, but don't express their concerns here.

If you read further down in the Quilt Shows thread, I think Hikenutty and Opinionate had some good suggestions that may help this category head off some of those unexpressed concerns about the temporary nature of re-enactments; Like adding a paragraph of explanation that addresses those concerns.  Maybe it could include links to the other examples that MAGEpirate and BluegrassCache pointed out.  I would put it right at the top with a note that the paragraph of explanation will be removed upon category approval.  Plead your case right in the description, since not everyone who votes participates in the forums.
