Barn:
Mount Clifton Farm, Clifton,
Cumbria, UK by Martlakes
"Usually stone built,
British bank barns are rectangular buildings. They usually have a central
threshing area with hay or corn (cereal) storage bays on either side on the
upper floor; and byres, stables, cartshed or other rooms below. The threshing
barn on the upper floor was entered by double doors in the long wall approached
from a raised bank: these banks could be artificially created. Opposite the main
doors was a small winnowing door which opened high above the farmyard level. A
common arrangement had an open-fronted single bay cartshed below the threshing
floor, with stables on one side and a cow-house on the other. The entrances to
these lower floor rooms were protected from above in many cases by a continuous
canopy or pentise carried on timber or stone beams which are cantilevered from
the main wall." from Wikipedia
This classic bank barn serves as a traditional 'housebarn' where
animals and people share living quarters under one roof.

Hey thanks for the feature. Unfortunately it's a bit late. The barn has partially collapsed in a severe wind storm in June. I'd guess it's down to about 6,000 square feet. The friends of Haven Hill are trying to raise funds to save what is left.

Barn:
Octagon Barn - San Luis Obispo,
California
by teeoff2
According to the State Office of Historic Preservation, this
...... 'Octagon Barn may be the only one left of it's kind in
California'.
As an aside, and for those of you 'city slickers' that haven't
been inside a milking parlour.... check this out - a carousel that milks
360 cows per hour - the perfect fit for those old round-ish barns (but
hardly sufficient for the ~20,000 cow mega dairies around here!).

Barnyard Waymarkers are pleased to announce the latest Featured Barn:
Lemoyne Star - S. Trade, Tennessee
by macleod1
From the UC Cooperative Extension Website:
"What is a barn quilt? Imagine a large, square, colorful wooden block with a painted quilt pattern that is mounted on the side of a barn. Most are 8’ x 8’. Barn quilts currently are in at least 16 states and embellish more than 900 barns."
Several Waymarkers have explored some of the many Quilt Barn Trails, and have shared the marvelous barns they found along the way. This month's Featured Barn had an exceptionally good close-up photograph of the Barn Quilt.

Barnyard Waymarkers are pleased to announce the latest Featured Barn:
Concord Road Barn - Georgia
by SearchN
Barn builders, like other tradesmen, would often add their 'signature' to the barns they designed and built. In this case there are small, diamond-shaped cutouts and a rick-rack pattern to the wood above the doorway.
Next time you drive down a country road and see an old barn standing in a field or nestled amongst the trees, look closely, beyond the weathered wood, for the fine details that tell a story about its special origins.

Barn:
PEIRCE BARN - WASHINGTON, DC
by Marine Biologist
Politicians are well known for closing the barn door after
the horse is out.... so it's only fitting that you'd find a barn located
in Washington D.C., the gathering place for our Senators and Representatives!
This fine old barn was once part of an old 19th century
gristmill. Today, a partnership between The Friends of Peirce Mill and the
NPS is in the process of restoring this facility to working
order.
