    Uploading images

I have gotten a new addiction this summer of waymarking Smile  But, I am having a big problem with uploading images.  It is taking me anywhere from 3 to 10 tries to get the picture uploaded.  When I hit the upload button it takes about 2-3 minutes to do nothing and then gives me back the upload page with the "You are not required" paragraph repeated at the top and no photo.  Like I said I can get this paragraph on a page like 10 times before the photo actually gets uploaded.  Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?  At this rate it is taking me nearly 30 minutes to get one visit or post completed.  If I was not so addicted I would have given up by now.  I have never had any problems with uploading images to Geocaching. com  -- Any suggestions?

    Re: Uploading images

There is a problem uploading large photos to the site.  It is supposed to resize them for you but it seems to have problems.  Try resizing your photos before uploading. I resize to 800 X 600 or 600 X 800 depending on orientation.   I seldom have a problem uploading and often upload 50 or more a day.

If you use XP you might try the xp add-on from Microsoft.  It is quick and easy.  Down load image resizer  from Microsoft.

    Re: Uploading images

Thanks, I will certainly try resizing.  I do have XP so I can try that as well.

    Re: Uploading images

Downloaded resizer and just like a charm got two photos to load in seconds.  Now I can really feed my addiction Big Smile.  Thanks so much for the help and for saving  me a lot  time.

    Re: Uploading images

I resize the digital photos 640 x 480 pixels jpg before uploading.  However I do not resize print photos that I have scanned.

I don't see an option to upload images when I try to log a waypoint I visited. A requirement of the waypoint. What am I missing?

Once you complete your visit log there will be a link for uploading your image. Also if you go back to your visit log you can upload from there also.

I set my camera down to a lower setting, also. Just so I could take more pictures on a long trip, etc. Mr. Globtrotter was giving me some line about the human eye can only see so many pixels, so the higher megapixels are a waste..

BUT I got the flip side of that  this week. An advertizing agency asked if they could use one of my photos, and asked for the original, and they were disappointed that it was only 1.3 megapixels. I immediately set my setting up to the 3.1 megapixel, becuase I have a huge card in my camera, and all the hard disk space I need, so I was being penny wise and pound foolish. I'm wondering if I should bump it up to the 5 megapixel, even.

I also like having higher resolutions for when I want to crop aggressively.

I agree on this one.  I am also so surprised when I first look at a photo and can't read the inscriptions when the photo is reduced to fit my screen but when I zoom in to real size it looks great and the cropping is great too.

    Re: Uploading images

When I resize mine, I usually shoot for 800x600.  I've have very few of those fail to upload. You might try setting the camera for that just to get a slightly bigger photo. Just to see.

I leave mine set for maximum all the time.

When I decide what to do with the photos, I can always take information away. But the reverse is not true. I can't add information if the photo is too small.

It is like what you said in another thread you can always throw information or in this case extra parts of the photo if not needed but if you don't collect it to begin with you end up having to go back.

I always shoot at the maximum resolution my camera supports. If you don't collect enough information, you end up having to go back ... and realize that the lighting only occurs twice a year, or something moved, or it's raining. No, I've learned the hard way you only get one chance to take the perfect photo - and that is when you see it. Never count on a do-over for photography, unless you're shooting with studio lighting.

Shoot maximum megapixels, and resize/crop as needed.

Couldn't agree more!   Occasionally I've been able to reshoot a site when the first photo was bad, but not often.  At the highest resolution and a 2G card, I can take a lot of photos, but carry extra cards just in case.

Downloaded the recommended Microsoft Powertoy  but I can't find where it went or any directions on how to use it.  Microsoft hid it somewhere.  All I can find is a "readme" file, which tells me nothing.

Oooh - Oooh  (Horshak imitation), I know that one. Right click on the picture, and select resize. It renames when it resizes with the name of the size - so its something like DCP1023 Large.

Hmmmm.  Okay, I'm being real dense here.  I did remember seeing some reference to a right click, but does that mean I have to exit my photo editor (Corel Paintshop Pro) to do that?  Can I do a batch?  Can I select a specific size? In Paintshop I've been selecting 600 for either width or height, whichever is longer.  And, then where does the new, resized copy get placed in the same directory?  I'm starting to run into HD space issues on my aging laptop  -  just couldn't bring my new Dell XP with me.  Got a nifty external drove, though  -  320G in my shirt pocket!

I do it in Windows Explorer, but I think I've also done it in the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer.

    The size choices are Small - 640x480 Medium 800x600 Large 1024x768 and Handheld 240 x 320

It renames and puts them in the same directory it came from, leaving the original intact.

Once you've installed the Image Resizer Powertoy, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Use Windows File Explorer to navigate to the folder where the .jpg pictures are that you want to resize.

Select the pictures that you want to resize with a single click.  Highlight contiguous groups by clicking the first file, pressing "shift" and clicking the last file.  Highlight individual files by holding "ctrl" and clicking the individual file names.

Right click on any of the highlighted files and select "Resize pictures"

A menu will pop up where you can select the size.

It will make resized copies in the same directory.

If you are adventurous you can fiddle with the advanced options.

    Re: Uploading images

Some more (budget friendly) tools - if you want to resize or crop, or perform some corrections like horizon straightening or mild exposure fixes.

    • Try using The Gimp, which is a powerful yet free image editing package. This is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. If you shoot in RAW format, make sure you grab the UFRaw plug in so you can read those file formats. RAW has benefits over JPG when it comes to difficult lighting/exposure situations, or when taking night photos. There is a plugin available that will make GIMP look/feel just like Photoshop.

    • Another batch resizer tool (for Windows) that is freeware is Irfanview. It's strength is the sheer number of file formats supported, and the ability to resize a bunch of photos at once.

    • If you run Windows Vista, the previously mentioned Powertoy is not compatible with Vista! Don't fear, there is an option - VSO Image Resizer duplicates this functionality for Vista users.

    Re: Uploading images

I have been trying to upload a picture and keep getting an error.

Vista ( sucks ) with IE, then Firefox.

    XP with IE.

I have been using the Vista ( sucks ) & IE the last couple days uploading to waymarking.com site

    and no problems.

    Re: Uploading images

Groundspeak was doing an upgrade to the Waymarking site and it was affecting the images but all should be good now.

If not you should report it in the other thread.
