    Ships Screws and Propellers

I have a category idea "Ship Screws and Propellers". The category would accept boat and aircraft props on display. Not the small pleasure or fishing boat props, but the large ones such as on container or cruise ships, tugs etc. Airplane propellers have also been used for public display such as from old bomber aircraft. If these need a category should they be separate, any thoughts? Would anyone be interested in joining a group to get it going if need be?

    Thanks, David (SearchN)

Sounds as good as "Bells" and "Anchors' to me. There might not be as many screws and props, but there  are still enough to waymark at about every small airport or marina and other places that might use either one for advertising.

    Another ships prop here

Love the idea, and think just like Jake that this goes great with some existing categories.

Sounds interesting!   Drawing the line between small/common decorative displays and what you might really want cold be tricky.  They might need to be different for ship screws and plane propellers.  But, I think this category idea has merit!  I'd be glad to lend a hand to get the screws turning!

I like it. Here's one at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (London)

Where to draw the line is tricky and depending on the picture any prop could look big without something to scale it by. A wide shot with the area surrounding it could solve that, but what to use as a starting point for submissions?

Does anyone know what the largest available boat prop is, one you can just walk in off the street and buy?  I'd say if you can order it through Bass Pro then it is definitely to small. We need to talk in feet here.

Gotta go to work, more later. Thanks for the interest and the pictures!

Would you allow the Screw on the Queen Mary? It's still on the ship, still in the water but viewable to visitors as a display.

    Good question. Hmm

That would have to be discussed with the group officers when creating the category to see if they would be allowed attached. That would also bring up the question of aircraft props still being attached to aircraft on permanent display.

My feelings are if there is a display specifically on the screw or prop and it is viewable it could count even if attached. That would eliminate just any ship or plane on display from being submitted and cut down on crossovers from other categories. Of course the display or marker describing the waymark's screw or prop would have to be included.

Any thoughts on this subject, what about a group and category title? Ship Screws & Propellers, Propellers & Screws?

Started the group "Screws and Propellers" in need of officers and members.
    Thanks everyone!

I'm looking forward to seeing this category...it's a great idea.  A couple dozen categories have my email full.  I'm sure you'll find the officers you need.

Not a category that interests me, but the Static Aircraft category does and I view this as the naval/marine equivilent.

    Good luck with it.

    Re: Ships Screws and Propellers

Could I get permission to copy and use some of the images for the category description? With credit of course plus you can still add the waymark if it becomes a category. Smile

    Thank you.
