    Category Proposal: Death Mask Headstones

Are these unusual grave markers common enough to make a good category? Maybe a little morbid, but it sure is interesting.

With all the cemetery-related cat's, you're worry we'll find it too morbid?  lol.

I have no idea about their prevelance, but I could definitely vote for this kind of cat.  The only thing I would like is for some sort of definition of death mask.

It looks like a homemade headstone to me!

I don't know how common they are.  I haven't seen any headstones with death masks, I have seen a few sarcophagi with death masks.

Perhaps "Cemetery Death Masks," then?  Or "Death Mask Graves?"

"The Faces of Death" group is now active and accepting members to help manage the Death Mask Gravestones category.

Yeah, I've never seen any of these, either, and I've looked at a lot of headstones!  I haven't been everywhere yet (BruceS has, I think - except Hawaii) but I think there may be a serious lack of prevalence propblem with this one.

All the more reason to hunt them, photograph them, and document them before they are weathered by nature and time or destroyed in vandalism.

I have a feeling the prevalence will depend largely on region and culture. I'm sure there are some areas with a bunch, and some with none.

Re: Category Proposal: Death Mask Headstones

The waymarking category, Death Mask Gravestones, has been approved by peer review and is now accepting submissions. There were several comments that this type of waymark was not prevalent enough to support a category. I felt that it was culturally and historically significant enough to give it a go. Thanx.

Re: Category Proposal: Death Mask Headstones

I may never be lucky enough to find one of these to waymark (especially since I don't personally care to go wandering around cemeteries looking for them or other of the graveyard categories), but I'm glad your category passed.

I'm surprised people thought there was a prevalence problem on this one.  Admittedly it may never approach the National Register of Historic Places or Benchmarks, but I have a hunch there are a lot more than US Presidential birthplaces or Whispering Giants!

    In any case congratulations!
