Proposal - Food or Meal challenge locations
Hi
Would a category where food or meal challenges be worth pursuing?
Alot of local/independent restaurants/pubs have come up with challenge or different challenges ideas to get more customers in the doors and to seperate themselves from the national chain restaurants. Challenges could be either food or NON ALCOHOLIC drink (milk shakes, soda, etc..)
Challenges may be individual or group challenges, such as eating a 5 pound hamburger within an hour.
Or maybe a pizza place has a 3 foot square pizza that 2 people are allowed to attempt to consume in a certian period of time. There are also places that have extremely hot(spicy) food challenges, such as consuming 12 "atomic" hot chicken wings in 15 minutes.
Some are serious, offering large cash prizes or expensive gifts. Most, though, only offer a small token or incentive ( a tee shirt, free meal, photo on a "wall of Fame") to keep the participants intrest. Some also cater to the loosers, having again tee shirts and or a "wall of "Shame".
Would not be looking for places where competitive food eating contests are held, unless held in an establishment that offers a daily challenge to the general public.
Thanks for all views and responses, both positive and negative!

That's kind of interesting. It would be a fun category using the restaurants, instead of just the restaurants themselves.
Why did you stress non-alcoholic? Waymarking is not the family-friendly site that Geocaching is. I see no reason to add this limitation.
I think this is fun and allows people to celebrate their successes and failures... heck, event caches could be created around these Waymarks too.

I assume you are talking about places like the Big Texan in Amarillo, Texas where they challenge you to eat a 72 ounce steak dinner and if you do within an hour it is free.

Re: Proposal - Food or Meal challenge locations
Boy! Sure brings back the memories. Growing up in Portland, OR, we used to have Birthday Parties all the time at Farrell's Ice Cream ParlourI vividly remember The Pig Trough Challenge: The Pig Trough: two scoops vanilla, two scoops chocolate, two scoops
strawberry, strawberry topping (on vanilla), chocolate topping (on
strawberry), pineapple topping (on chocolate), two bananas, whip cream,
nuts, cherries, and a flag!
I'm not sure of the age cutoff, but ribbons were awarded if a kid could finish it off. Good times :)

The ribbons used to say "I made a Pig of myself at Farrells" , and you got to sign the wooden pig's trough it was served in.

Correct this type of challenge location as BruceS linked. There are a few TV shows on a Travel network that showcase some of these establishments also.

Well, it is certainly an interesting idea, and some of these may not be widely known, but I think there may be a prevalence issue - just not enough to make a decent category. Not sure if these exist in other parts of the world, but they certainly may.

So basically two banana splits. Without even blinking. Does that mean I'm a pig?

I think it sounds interesting. Although each location may not be widely known, except perhaps to those who live nearby, I think there shouldn't be too big an issue with prevalence. Globally speaking on the other hand may be an issue, because nobody can strap on the ol' feed bag like us Americans.

Re: Proposal - Food or Meal challenge locations
I'll do some more checking to see about global prevalence. I was not sure if other countries had this sort of food entertainment/spectacle. Thanks for input!

Touchstone is from our neck of the woods. The world is getting smaller one waymark at a time. I waymarked the last operating location of the original Farrell's chain when waymarking was still in its toddler stages. Even though it wasn't a Farrell's at this time it still had the Pig Trough and ribbons. We used to order it all the time to split since it was cheaper than buying individual servings. I had to archive it last year when they gutted the place and turned it into a pizza parlor. Memories indeed. At TeamFarkle7: Apparently yes, but are you a chauvinist too? That is the real question. Back on topic; Yes, this is an interesting idea that gets away from the chain theme that so many categories use. Are there other chains that have challenges as well that need to be addressed in some manner as well? Does it matter if an exiting chain category is somehow duplicated in the challenge category?
