    Category Ideas

First of all, I'm going to put these out here BEFORE I try to write a category.  I see folks in the forums getting their feelings hurt or being angry because they got a negative vote, but they never put their ideas to the "membership" to get ideas and work out bugs.  I've never tried to write my own category, so be kind...LOL! Wink

    That said, how about a

    1. "Women in History" or "Famous Women"" category?  There is a category for statues of famous people, none of them women.  It could include statues, plaques and memorials of Women worldwide and also those hometown heros who leave their indellable mark on their communities.

    2. A waymarking game to mark and record the "Colors" of Motorcycle Clubs around the world? My big thing with this one is how to prevent duplicates? Instead of an other waymarks in the area posted flag is there an option for "sounds like" flag?

    3. Artificial Reefs and Reef balls.  I ran across one on display at a local shopping venue.  It was really neat, but I have no idea where you might waymark such a display. If they were underwater, there would have to be documentation by way of a chart picture identifying the reef or if they are near a pier, a sign stating that there are reef balls under the pier.  I think most piers post such things....ours here do.

    Re: Category Ideas

Women in History, I think is a good idea for a category.  By the way I have two statues of women in the Statues of Historic Figures category so you really can't say none of them are women Smile  now the other 56 I have in that category are not women.   Women I have in the category are  Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne - St. Charles, Missouri  and Mary Jane Leavitt Abbott - Mesquite, Nevada

Colors of Motorcycle Clubs I don't know much about them so the category description would need to educate me.

Artificial Reefs - Though they are interesting if you are diving and handy locations to know if you are fishing however  from the surface there really is not much to see.... Just a bunch of water especially those off shore.

    Re: Category Ideas

Oh Hey....That category is under the Memorial Dept.  I was looking at the one under the History Dept.  Anyway, we'll see what others think.

Motorcycle "colors" are those patches that are seen on the backs of motorcyclists everywhere.  They usually indicate membership in a specific club, but not always.  Some bikers wear "Lone Wolf" patches. For example, my husband rides this Law Enforcement Club.  http://www.defendersmc.org     http://www.charlotte.defendersmc.org     Believe it or not each part of the patch set has a specific meaning.

Taking a photo of colors in our area might get you shot. Automobile

And another article specific to my city.

From the article:   OMG (Outlaw motorcycle groups) Club members refer to themselves as “1%ers” (or One Percenters) and most display “1%” patches on their jackets, or “Colors 13″.  The label refers to a quote by the American Motorcycle Association stating that “ninety nine percent of all motorcycle riders in this country are law abiding citizens.”   The OMGs claim to make up the remaining one percent, thus the reference.

I can't help but respond to the notion that these guys make up a majority. They give the rest of us a bad name! Angry

I didn't really think they made up the majority. I was just playing devils advocate. Wink

Bringing up an issue that should be considered when writing the category.

    Re: Category Ideas

Famous Women seems easy enough, albeit subjective but really should not be an issue. There are many categories to use as templates for creation.

Artificially Created Reefs could be interesting, but are they really all that prevalent?

Biker's Colours - Ah, my concern is not about the riders at all. Is there a site available that lists them already, much like there are website devoted to cataloging "Scottish Tartans"? If there was some form of 'checklist' that could be filled in, then I can see this working.

    Re: Category Ideas

Women - Are there really that many potential waymarks that could NOT already be included in current categories?  I'm certainly not opposed to crossposting, but something to be considered.  At least it has a definite focus, and it makes sense to gather these under one heading.  Just be careful of the subjectivity issue.  What is "famous" or a "significant contribution?"

Reefs - Main issue, as has been mentioned, is prevalence.  I think there can be a logical place for locating coordinates, but I just doubt that there are enough of these to make a decent category.

Biker Patches - Are these permanent locations, like a club house, or do I have to chase a biker around to get a photo of his colors?  "Pardon me, sir, could I visit you?"  I really think waymarks should be actually, "visitable" geographic location.  So, I see this problematic, at best.

    Keep the ideas coming, though!

Check out http://www.beginnerbikers.org/index.php or http://www.beginnerandbeyond.com/cmps_index.php?page=home and you'll find a bunch of 99%'ers. We even have a 1%'er and we all love him. They are not the majority, but get press like the vocal minority.

For the "colors" would you need a pic and location of a club house or just a member with his colors on and the location where you met.

I it is this then I think it would be a better photo goal than category.

Either way it is an intriguing idea.

    Re: Category Ideas

Actually artificial reefs examples can be found outside of the water. We have one on the grounds of our local high school. Interesting to see what is below our waters.

Women in History is a great idea. I think you need to make sure you include all forms of memorials, signs, plaques, statues. There are many out there that get overlooked.

The motorcycle colors I also am not familiar with. Possibly if you can explain more and give detail we can look at it more. Good luck with all your attempts. The first time can be hair raising but don't give up.
