Man-made Devilish Locations
Well as Flip Wilson portraying Geraldine would say, "The Devil made me do it!"
So for any of you, like me, who has tried to submit a location in the "Devilish Locations" category and were told they don't except man-made locations, please vote yea for the "Man-made Devilish Locations" category. Thank you.

Re: Man-made Devilish Locations
What is considered man made? Is a street, a city, a store. What if the before mentioned is named after a natural location like Devil's Tower Tavern.

Technically, yes. Man put a name to a place. He named it after the Devil (or whatever).
Not sure I'd say it'd be an anti-category, more along the line of enhanced category, broader if you will. This of course for me is nowhere near being precedent setting. You may recall, that there was once only one Neon category. Until the first one decided to get picky, that was fine. But once the category decided to only except the Laughing Larries of the World, a second, broader category was created. The same went for Drive-In Movie Thearters. Originally, all were excepted, then lo and behold, they no longer wanted closed Drive-Ins. Gee, the next thing you know, we have a category for Closed Drive-Ins. Also, when I got no response from the group running the Lincoln Highway Marker category, I started a broader category that excepted other things found along that route.
If the group running the Devil Locations category would have responded to my inquiries, I might not have started this one. But I did. Thanks Flip...

No it won't be excepting the Devil's Tower, it's a natural formation. However, the tavern down the road from it would work.

Re: Man-made Devilish Locations
How will you handle devil-named places that span a large geographic area (Diablo Valley, California or Devil's Stompin' Ground Road in North Carolina)? Also, I didn't see this in the category description, but will you require a photo of a sign that includes the devilish name? Oh, Satan is spelled "Sat an" not "Satin".

Re: Man-made Devilish Locations
A photograph of the location implies a sign, but I guess I'll have to spell it out.
As far as the spelling of Satan goes, my guess is you weren't paying attention...
Satin??? Just making sure you're paying attention.
Maybe I should put tool belts on the lil guys...

I don't think 'location' implies 'sign', so yeah - I think it would be best to spell it out. But you didn't answer my question about large geographic areas - will you allow someone to submit every street sign on each block of Mt. Diablo Street in Concord, California for instance? (I'm really not trying to give you a hard time about this, I think this is a real potential issue for your category).
team farkle 7:As far as the spelling of Satan goes, my guess is you weren't paying attention...
I guess I'm still not paying attention, because I still don't get it. I was supposed to know from your "Just making sure you're paying attention" comment on the category description page that all those misspellings were deliberate? If it is some kind of a joke, I guess I'm missing it - and personally I wouldn't encourage misspellings on a category description when the use of particular names on signs is going to be critical to acceptance of waymarks in that category, even if done tongue-in-cheek. Or maybe I've just got no sense of humor today.

Well they do "except" them so they don't "accept" them - as long as we're on misspellings. Personally, I think it is a very random category. What is so special about these named places? Could not then have a category for man-made places named for, say, animals? All those Pink Flamingos, and Jackass Saloons, you know. Or how about angelic and heavenly named places? I'm not sure this is a road we want to travel any further. Of course, I've been wrong about "stupid" categories before . . . like neon signs and manhole covers, eth?

Rather than humor lacking, I'd say lacking empathy for bad spellers or typists.
Generally, when one says "Just making sure you're paying attention", it's bad speller/typer speak for "ooops". Maybe he should have added one of those embarassed face emoticons?
There is a manual you can check out from the library called "Bad spellers of the world, Untie", I forget the author.

I thought the idea could be fun... as long as it doesn't accept "fluff".
I'm all for it.

Yeah, I'll spell it out. I'll require a photograph of a sign, if there is one, which there should be since I wish to gear this towards places of business. So to answer your question, no I won't accept street signs. I believe the other category does. Let them deal with each and every intersection...
Yes, you were supposed know the "paying attention" bit is a joke, and no you don't have a sense of humor, today, or any other day. You're not expected to, being from Cow Hampshire and all.
That too, is just a joke, purely for my maintaining my Masshole status. Sing along!
Folks I'd like to sing a song about the American Dream About me, About you, About the way our American hearts beat way down in the bottoms of our chests, About that special feelting we get in the cockles of our hearts Or maybe below the cockles, Maybe in the sub cockle area, Maybe in the liver, Maybe in the kidneys, Maybe even in the colon, We don't know...
I'm just a regular joe, With a regular job. I'm your average white, Suburbanite slob. I like football, and porno, and books about war. I've got an average house, With a nice hardwood floor. My wife, and my job, my kids, and my car, My feet on the table, With a Cuban cigar. But sometimes that just ain't enough, To keep a man like me interested, Oh no, no way, uh uhh. No I gotta go out and have fun, At someone elses expense, Oh yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I drive really slow, In the ultra fast lane, while people, behind me, are going insane.
I'll stop right about here.

BUGGER! I can't believe I did that! Oh well, you got to be able to laugh at yourself.
Anyway, how many Jackass Saloons you think there might be? You might be on to something...

Thanks BQ, for your support, although I do have to say that Devilsh Fluff is the best.
What you is take two slices of rye bread, the marble kind, and you put marshmallow fluff on one and deviled ham on the other. Then all you do is put the two slices together, but make sure you do it right and join the two sides without anything on them together. You don't want the ham and the fluff to actually come in contact with one another until you take a big bite.
Check Amazon periodically for "Harvey Farkle - How to Grill on Your engine Block". Also found in the bargain bins at Borders...

Mr. Globetrotter used to make fun of all the pub names in England. The Monkeys Butt Tavern, the Sheeps Brain Inn, etc.
Maybe just funny names of pubs would do it.

Re: Man-made Devilish Locations
Well much to my surprise, it passed peer review. 50 yea votes out of 78, with 8 abstains! I love some of the deny comments about redundancy. Do people read the descriptions??? or, "you are not worthy, you continually misspell Satan" No Shiite Sherlock! Again not paying attention. or... "This is a situation where Devilish Locations ought to be expanded,
rather than creating another category just to handle man-made sites.
I'm not really a fan of creating a whole category just because one
waymark was declined in the existing category. If there's enough to
justify category creation, then there's enough to suggest the current
category be expanded." Uh, yeah. believe me, I tried that route. It'd be nice if others would reply to emails. Oh well. By the way it was two waymarks, not just one. "I'll abstain - not that I see anything strictly against the criteria,
just don't like the concept of "a category for objects that won't fit
into another category".
BTW it is Satan, not Satin." Too bad, pay attention. Seriously, you paid your money. You have a say in how things go, so pay attention to what you're doing. These people probably are texting while driving. I love this one! "Satin was the name of one of my parents' cats.
If you're going to allow variations, will you also allow "Old Scratch"
and some of those nicknames? If so, you'll need to list them.
Keep in mind that people for whom English is not their first language
might not get your "joke" about "satin" and just think you can't spell.
And (from the forums) it's "accepting". The other Devilish cat WILL be
excepting the stuff that would fit in this cat. AND this cat will be
excepting the stuff that fits in the other cat. :)" I will accept (there) "Old Scratch" and any other names the Red Guy goes by. I certainly can't be expected to know all his nicknames, so as any new ones come along, I'll be more than happy to add to the list. Incidentally, I've already made the corrections to the spelling of Satan. I never planned on keeping the category looking like that. It will look, I hope, more professional before I release it. Thank you all for your input and suggestions. Now go to hell! Michigan. Hell, Michigan, that is.

Re: Man-made Devilish Locations
Here is a list of possible Devil Names for you to peruse. Looking at the list it gives names for devil types from other regions. Of course someof the ones on the list would be gods to some folks and they might take exception to their guy being added to the devil list.
I do think that a listing for a sight that featured Yen-lo-Wang the Chinese ruler of Hell would be interesting.
Here is another one. It is more comprehensive but doesn't give origins. I wonder why "leonard" is a name for the devil although sometimes my uncle Leonard spoke like the devil so maybe they are referencing him. Anyhow this list covers all of the devils "old" names, "old (old scratch, nick, harry, horny, gentleman, one, splitfoot, cloverfoot)" and a bunch I have never heard of. I also found a youtube video that makes the case that Barack Obama is identified as Satan in the scriptures. I wonder who will be the first to waymark the president for the category?
