NRIS DB for HRHP only works on Windows
I'd love to participate more in the National Registered Historic Places category but I've been having trouble dealing with the National Register Information System database. If an NHRP location is not explicitly listed in the apparently static web site , then I can't find it.
After repeated failures (over months), doing queries from Safari on a Macintosh to the NRIS DB and getting errors saying "{some gibberish followed by,} This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again." I finally decided to try the query from FireFox on the Mac. The error is presented differently, saying "You have chosen to open explorer.dll which is a Windows DLL." After rereading the Safari error message, the explorer.dll information was buried in there as well, but I didn't key into it.
So now I'm realizing that this database is Mac unfriendly, which is why I haven't filed many NRHP places. I have some in my queue, but I can't come up with a URL in the government database.
I guess my solution is to go to my local library and use one of their Windows machines to complete my waymarks. This is not an attractive idea to me and impedes my NRHP category production.
Has anyone else discovered this or dealt with it differently from a Mac?

If you are trying to use the NRIS system it is out of date. Try the new
Focus
site, it may be friendlier.
