This is why I never started waymarking...

I've been caching for seven years, and on this trip to disney, I thought I'd try waymarking.
If this is how most people play, I don't think I'll be back.

This is the email I got:

    Downy288,
Many categories require a picture to be uploaded, and it seems you have been only logging those that dont require one.....

you mean to tell me that you spent several days in disney and took no pics? you know that one of the main aspects of this game is the uploading/sharing of photos and stories, but you cant seem to get that one right either....

they removed your favorite fountain? where is your picture showing this?**
it is the people like you that give waymarking a bad name.....

its a wonder i dont delete all of your logs to all of my waymarks that do not have a picture uploaded--required or not.
    ~C***********I**

**This was sent about an hour after I had started logging, and was working on uploading photos over dial-up.

Well I don't think it is how most people "play". I do wonder if there were there other conversations that preceded this one?

Sometimes we see many armchair loggers who just don't care. Perhaps this user was frustrated at this unfortunate aspect of the game. I don't know. The tone is unfortunate but I do hope you will explore a bit more and take time to learn the ins and outs. It can be a fun GPS based activity. I personally don't get my enjoyment out of visiting but in creating waymarks. I visit other waymarks to encourage my fellow waymarkers. I like the visits I get and encourage them so my visits to others are a thank you of sorts for their efforts in the hobby. I prefer visits that are more than the "been there" type but don't fret about them either when I do get them. However, when someone starts logging a bunch and it seems that they may not have even been there I admit I get frustrated. I have only logs one time and it was for an obvious armchair visitor.
This sounds like a misunderstanding of intentions to me. Hope you will roll with it and make some contributions to the site.

By the way, resizing your photos will help immensely with the upload.

Re: This is why I never started waymarking...

i see its been discussed on the other place too.....
    http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=234811

and for the record, no this wasnt the first note i have sent to this person about the 'rules' of waymarking.....

notice he doesnt attach the second message where i discussed the situation.(thats how he found the forums, i linked him to threads about the subject)

yea, at this point i know about the 'will upload later'. but, as mentioned elsewhere out of just under 100 marks only one mentioned a pic to come....

and frankly, i dont know why you would spend all the effort to have to go back through. do it right the first time.

seems as if he is not wanting to learn to adapt his process to satisfactorily complete a log.....

if i recall correctly, havent we had this conversation before?

many categories require a picture to be uploaded, so it seems you have begun
only logging those that dont require one.....

you mean to tell me that you spent several days in disney and took no pics? you
know that one of the main aspects of this game is the uploading/sharing of
photos and stories, but you cant seem to get that one right either....as your
logs all seem to be the same copy/paste....

they removed your favorite fountain? where is your picture showing this?

it is the people like you that give waymarking a bad name.....

finally found one where you did not complete the requirements. it has been
deleted. and another. and another, in the same category. and another. and
    another.

its a wonder i dont delete all of your logs to all of my waymarks that do not
have a picture uploaded--required or not.

Well, maybe if you give me time to upload photo's on DIAL-UP internet... I have the pictures, but not everyone can afford 20MBs connections.
    ----
this issue has been discussed in the forums. but the main idea conveyed was to not post the log until you could satisfy the requirements (or just upload a pic). thus, one at a time until complete.

have you tried resizing your pics? there are several threads about that too......

here are several threads i found from the term 'upload' other helpfu terms might include 'resize', 'image' and others....

Absolutely it is NOT how most people play this wonderful activity of waymarking!

We have thousands of waymarkers all over the world, over 200,000 waymarks in nearly 1,000 different categories!

I'm sure you've had some less than pleasant experiences in geocaching, and this side of the GPS game is no different.  But, please don't let this sour you on the entire game!

I get quite a few visit logs submitted for my waymarks, and they range all the way from the very entertaining and informative stories from the BeanTeam, to "saw this on our honeymoon."  I'm grateful for each one.

Although many categories require, request or suggest a photo, I have never tried to enforce that.  In fact I have never deleted a waymark visit at all.  (I may be about to do that since I got one that was nothing more than a single period.  I kid you not!)

Many of us are more lenient.  Keep in mind that the log entry notice goes to the individual that created the waymark, not to the category managers, so each individual waymarker is free to accept, reject, or request changes to any visit log to one of his/her waymarks.

So, I would encourage you not to give up on us!

The following is a response by a major Australian broadcaster to its comments on what it calls "trolls". It may be of interest considering some remarks made in this thread.

Re: This is why I never started waymarking...

I'm a total noob. I just got a GPS a couple weeks ago and had never heard of waypointing. After dinking around the site it looks to me like taking and posting pictures is part of the deal. A 2 ½ by 3 ½ at 100 pixels per inch comes in at under 100 KB. Not a big challenge even for dial-up. I can't tell from any of this what the first communication was. If chapterhouseinc erred it appears to be by submitting to frustration. A courtesy note to explain the "rules" could have been followed by simply deleting logs that don't meet requirements. No muss, no fuss. On another board a moderator moved my wonderful thread to sub-forum. I felt insulted for a day. The next day I realized he was correct. I found this whole thread very helpful. I like to do three things: walk my dog; take pictures and play with my GPS. I just might give this a try. Peace and blessings Bob

Yes, we are more than happy to assist.

I have ideas that I could share for the Googie Architecture category and both neon categories along with a few other personal favorites category wise.
