    Amphitheaters question

It doesn't look like there's an Amphitheater Category. Am I missing something?

There are a couple categories that are close, but not quite:

Bandshells asks that the stage has a roof and for the most part, three sides. Not all ampitheaters have a structure like that.

Live Stage Theaters asks that the venue is used primarily for theatrical performances.

Both of those categories are pretty specific, and leave out a lot of potential venues. There was a locationless for these: Ampitheater - Classically Greek!.

    Amphitheater definitions:

1.An oval or round structure having tiers of seats rising gradually outward from a central open space or arena.
2.An arena where contests and spectacles are held.
3.A level area surrounded by upward sloping ground.
4.An upper, sloping gallery with seats for spectators, as in a theater or operating room.

    Re: Amphitheaters question

We have quite a few amphitheaters in the Live Stage Theater category as we try to be flexible on requirements.  But, I think this a specific enough subset that it could well deserve its own category.  I know I've passed on a few that I didn't think were a real good fit - maybe occasional or informal use - parks, riverside, college campus, etc.  I'd be glad to join you.

the ones i have seen are mainly for music--thus they dont fit in the live stages.....and they arent really bandshells either....

    Re: Amphitheaters question

Okay, I was mainly wanting to find out if there was a category out there that I was missing. For some reason, I've just always assumed that there was a general amphitheater category just like the locationless, so I was surprised when it didn't come up in a search.

I wasn't expecting to start a new category, but I will if no one else does it, as I believe it is needed.

    Re: Amphitheaters question

I did a bit more searching, and found that a group did try to start a category for amphitheaters sometime last year, but it was voted down for some reason. I don't remember this, does anyone else? It looks like a good description, so I'm wondering what the waymarking community thought was wrong with it (wish I could see the comment section for the votes). I'll probably email Marine Biologist, who appears to be the group leader.

    Re: Amphitheaters question

Hi Ambrosia, I created a category for Amphitheaters last year.  It was overwhelmingly approved by the waymarking community during peer review, but TPTB denied it on the grounds that it was already covered by Live Stage Theaters.  I personally think amphitheaters should have their own category, but ...

Here's a link to the Amphitheater Category page we put out for peer review (assuming it can be viewed by others besides our group):  http://www.waymarking.com/cat/details.aspx?f=1&guid=e14996e1-b6cf-455d-aaa4-a693f265cd35&exp=True

    Re: Amphitheaters question

    Thanks for the quick response!

I wonder if we can get a comment from Groundspeak on this issue? Live Stage Theaters are not inclusive enough to allow all amphitheaters. I can name several amphitheaters that wouldn't be allowed in that category, just off the top of my head. Right now, they are in waymarking limbo because they don't fit anywhere.

For instance, the reason that I started this thread is because I wanted to waymark The Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery: link

I was surprised that no one else had waymarked it, then I realized that was because it didn't fit anywhere. It is used for memorial services. It isn't a bandshelter, and it isn't used for theater. But it definitely is cool and needs to be waymarked!

    Re: Amphitheaters question

    Hmmm,
I don't remember it going through peer review, I'm sure I would have voted for it. The Live Stage Theaters is pretty much indoor theaters. Corrrect me if I'm wrong. I am surprised TPTB would deny it.
I think it would be a great category. Hopefully it'll make it this time.

    Re: Amphitheaters question

I'd be happy to resubmit the category page for peer review and see if it makes it through this time.  We're any of you able to access the category page from the link I provided above?  If so, please let me know if you have any recommendations for revision.  Thanks!  Sandy

    Re: Amphitheaters question

Yup, I can see it, and it looks good to me.

I prefer not to require pictures for visit logs, but that's it, I think.
