I'm sure we can all do it with the Waymarkers in Jacksonville, Tampa and the Charlotte Harbor area. The trick is to do it where it's not the Waymarking equivalent of tossing film canisters in bushes. Waymarks for the sake of waymarks never made sense to me. Huh?

    Massachusetts (As of 03/04/09):

    Waymarks:  2192
    Geocaches:  5603

    Ratio, WM/GC:  0.391
    Ratio, GC/WM:  2.56

Wow, I had lost track of the number of geocaches in the state.  I'm working on the waymark numbers!

been a while: here is a FL update:
    (no filters)
    GC: 20931
WM: 11850 (an increase of 2420 in 8 months)

for every WM there is 176 GC. for every GC there is .56 WM.

These numbers make no sense.  I have been informed multiple times that nobody waymarks.

    Re: Waymark to Geocache Ratio

Well geocaching has caught up a bit in Missouri.  Currently 5117 geocaches and 6723 waymarks,  so there are 1.313 waymarks for ever cache.   Sounds like I need to do some at home waymarking.  Well of the 1000+ waymarks in my queue less than half are in my home state.

Hmmm maybe a set of stats I will have to do for my blog. Smile

welcome to the world of nobodys....

if nobody waymarks even fewer post in the waymarking forum.....

i think that a lot are turned off because they think it takes too much time....but creating poasint and maintaining a cache takes more effort....

i had someone tell me today that posting a benchmark was way too involved for them....it really doesnt get much easier than that....

    Re: Waymark to Geocache Ratio

    Finland
    Waymarks 120
    Geocaches 10342

    Waymarks / Geocaches ratio is ~ 0.012
    Geocaches /Waymarks ratio is ~ 86.2

I guess waymarking is just getting started here.

    btw. my home town
    Waymarks 33
    Geocaches 71
    Waymarks / Geocaches ratio ~ 0.46
    Geocaches / Waymarks ratio ~ 2.15

    Re: Waymark to Geocache Ratio

I didn't do a Nebraska calculation, but for York, NE the ratio as of this a.m. is 11 caches (three active local cachers)  and 115 waymarks within 5 miles of "center."   The waymarks are by BruceS, NevaP and yours truly.
    Since I'm doing waymarks  to
    (1) "publish" local history and
    (2) highlight facilities that might be of interest to Interstate 80 travelers,
my motivation is different than trying to plug holes in a category grid or simply rack up high numbers.
Regards, Stan Schulz, Library Director, Kilgore Memorial Library, York, NE
[p.s. my workplace is ( WMPB9 ) -- waymarked by BruceS three years ago. ]

    7731 Wm 7812 GC

98.9 % I am trying to upgrade that WM number a little.

    Rayman:
    New York:
    12,522 caches
6,113 waymarks (only 950 are mine, I'm slacking)

    2.04 caches per waymark or
    .49 waymarks per cache.

I guess I'm a little surprised by that since nearly all of downstate (NYC and Long Island) is fairly unwaymarked. There's probably a ton of things that can be waymarked in those areas too.

I understand NYC has some neon Whisper

Maybe it's just me, but could this be why sometimes it feels like we're Groundspeak's red headed stepchild?

I think I got you beat (not that it's about the numbers) (wink wink nudge nudge)
For Michigan, I got 1215 waymarks and Zero geocaches.
That leaves me with an additional 946 waymarks spread about the US & Canada and still no caches.
Personally, I like the ratio, and it's much more fun than golf. Unless you're talking disc or miniature. If so, then waymark 'em.

Maybe someday, I'll shove something into something else and stick it in my backyard, then whoever comes looking can visit over a dozen waymarks. Let me know ahead of time and there'll be beverages.

    BruceS:
What is your state/province/country Waymark to Geocache Ratio?

For my state of Missouri - currently has 5953 Waymarks and  4154 Geocaches.

The ratio is 1.43 Waymarks per Geocache.

Probably half of the waymarks are yours Smile  Should we adjust the ratio so it is more in line with states containing only us mortals?

    Re: Waymark to Geocache Ratio

    Kentucky as of 10/22/09:

    3295 Waymarks
    6807 Geocaches

That is 0.4841 waymarks per geocache or 2.0659 geocaches per waymarks.

    Re: Waymark to Geocache Ratio

I collected the posted data and did a linear regression to get a formula to predict the number of waymarks in a state from the number of geocaches.  This formula excludes the foreign countries listed.

    w = 0.181885g + 3242.347

w = # of waymarks in your state
g = # of geocaches in your state

The correlation coefficient was 0.68477.  I tried a few different regressions, but I didn't get a better fit.

I have added a couple posts to my blog A Number of Ways on Waymark to Geocache ratios.  Sorry about the formatting... you will have to scroll down some to see the lists.   The blog isn't liking my table format... I will try to figure that out tomorrow.

    Re: Waymark to Geocache Ratio

Here is a situation for Croatia...
    Waymarks: 362
    Geocaches: 369

    W/G=0.98
    G/W=1.02

I'll make an effort to increase the number of waymarks, and increase W/G ratio to over 1 before the end of this year.

I have 299 Croatian waymarks (82.6%). Would be cool to have few more waymarkers here.
