waymarking - kool, waymking sites sucks

I have been enjoying waymrking -the hobby. Lots to do here since we enjoy history, graveyards  and art. But waymarking the site is frustrating.

Yesterday we went out and did 28 different waymarks and now the process of logging begins. Navigation through the site just to get to the next mark we want to log is a pain, NOT user friendly Uploading photos almost always take 2 tries. I am on cable connect and all photos are under 2mb. After about 5 loggings, I have to leave the site alltogether because of system errors. _wait 10 minutes - log back in and do more .

Photo upload issues need to be fixed.
Site navication needs a lot of work. Site navication needs work.  Site navication need work.
Ability to get description and/or logging requirements into gps would be nice. Connectivity with GPS is way behind the times.
Why do waymararks have numbers (example - WM6KR7) If you can't search for it.

    Hey Bapman!
Yeah, it's a little hairy at first, but I think most folks tend to concentrate on their favorite categories, so they just go straight to them. Once you're more familiar with the layout, it's a lot easier.

The uploading of photos however can be troublesome. It says you can upload up to 4 megs, but anything around 2 tends to take too long and it times out. For me, anything over 1.5 I generally make it a smaller file then post.

Thanks btw for the visits to some of my waymarks!

Re: waymarking - kool, waymking sites sucks

If you are doing visits, then it is usually best to find the first one and then do nearest waymark from that one assuming you are visiting waymarks in the same area.... or do searches using either the waymark number or name as a key word.  WM6KR7 - Royal Oak Theater.... found 2 seconds Smile

I get the waymark description into my gps.  I download gpx files load into gsak and create poi's and load into gps.  I really don't care what the logging instructions are I know I will be taking a few photos in general.

Photo uploads is a known problem.  I typically do photos under 200 kb...  even though site will accept larger there is a time out issue.

Re: waymarking - kool, waymking sites sucks

I always resize my photos before uploading. Somtimes I can get 1 or 2 in without resizing, but it's not worth the trouble or time.

The image resizer works really fast, I just select all and right click. After that my photos go up zipedy fast without problems (mostly).

Yes you can. Click the "WAYMARKS" tab abd type it in.

    Enter a WM#

yes, but this function is not clearly seen by the untrained eye--link on the GC home page the box that alrady has the 'GC' in the box......

my process is just to click to view a waymark, any waymark (hey, it runs up the views on the featured waymarks) and just change the URL.....

and i find the 'CAPS' requirement a nuisance--the other site takes lower case.......but also note on the GC Ipod App, when searching by GC code the 'app' turns caps lock on......

edit: tooting my own horn: of my posts in the last few minutes filled in the last box under my name to the left....(at 687 posts)

If you want to do it THAT way, just use http://coord.info/wm####
You can do the same thing with http://coord.info/GC#####

That popped up in the weekly mailings that groundspeak sends out. Very easy to remember.

but wouldnt it just be easier for

    http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMWZM

    to accept

    http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMwzm

    or

    http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/wmwzm

Apparently it wouldn't be easier, because what you want works fine with http://coord.info/wm#### and not with http://www.waymarking.com/whatever.

I mean making it work with with the latter would require changing something where the other is already working.

    /sarcasm

You're right, it -should- have been easier...

Re: waymarking - kool, waymking sites sucks

    i just found something 'neat'

    http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM75VE_Publix_West_Bay_Drive_Belleair_Bluffs_FL

    navigate there....

You would thing you are going to WM75VE, a Publix.....

but actually you go to http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM75VE_Belleair_Bluffs_FL

because WM75VE is actually a city hall.

therfore in the URL everything AFTER WMXXXX is 'for decorative purposes only'.

Re: waymarking - kool, waymking sites sucks

It is actually very helpful to have that text there if you are linking something to the waymark. Helps know which URL to drop into HTML if you are building a page and have a few URLs in your work area.

Re: waymarking - kool, waymking sites sucks

    no, you both missed it....

    look at the links again....
    the part AFTER WMXXX.....

now, lets play which one of these is not like the other....look at the links. click them. look at the URL and the name of the waymark.....

the first link says WMXXXX_Publix. but CLICK IT. it is not a publix.

    get it now?

Re: waymarking - kool, waymking sites sucks

The use of descriptive URLs in links is a common technique for improving search engines page ranks. It is also common for web sites to translate or interpret URLs so that the same page can be reached through different URLs.
