Marinas - Looking for members and potential officers

We have yacht clubs, boat ramps, bait shops but there is nothing to cover the numerous marinas that cover almost every lake in the country.

So set up the group and looking for help in getting this going.

Re: Marinas - Looking for members and potential officers

Lakes, rivers, ports all over the world!

But, it could be a good category, if written well
    Keep it global.
Carefully define what qualifies as a marina site.
    Where must coordinates be obtained?
Photos - sign, over view, boats?
    Private or public variable.
But, don't overload it with variables, esp. ones that are difficult to find or that would be familiar only to avid boaters.  Things like fees may be hard to find, for instance.  Or, at least make those kinds of variables optional.
Location variable - lake, river, sea port, etc.

Just top of my head stuff . . .

I knew I could rely on SQ to have some great ideas. I am with you on all suggestions. But am not sure exactly how to be specifically inclusive in the defination of a marina. Sort of I know one when I see one.

    Thanks for the help.

    Some other variable options

    - Mooring Fees
    - Repair Facility (Y/N)

Home Travel Agency calls a marina: A facility for personally owned sailboats and yachts, typically offering docking, fuel, off-season out-of-water storage and other services; sometimes with a restaurant.

    Cool BQ

That is the best defination I have seen yet.

    Thanks

I need at least one additional officer to help me get this going.

Thanks to those that can be of assistance.

Send me an invite and I'll help you get this started (might drop out after it gets rolling due to the other categories I manage.)

Re: Marinas - Looking for members and potential officers

Just to add some more content to people's long description, give them ideas of what they could add to make it better or more interesting. Does the lake host fishing contest, is jet skies and loud boats allowed, is there a limit on engine size, does it have a restaurant, what is the main source of entertainment on the lake. Here we have bars with docks, so there's a lot of BWI's issued every year. They should definitely give the address and I think more then a dock and gas pumps. Do they have water sports, boat races, sell bait, just simple things they could add instead of the plain old. "Here's So'nSo' Marina, Here's their address, have fun."  How many boat launches? We have a state owned boat launch site in 3 spots on the lake that is free and then the pay to launch so free launching could be a variable that some people would look for. Swizzle

Re: Marinas - Looking for members and potential officers

Having worked at a yacht club for over 30 years, I'd like to say that the only difference between a yacht club and a marina is that a yacht club is owned by all it's members, whereas a marina is privately owned.
Both yacht clubs and marinas may or may not have any of the facilities mentioned above such as restaurants, marine hoists, launching ramps, out of water boat storage, etc.

Ps: I'd avoid listing prices, as they change on a yearly basis and may be misleading after a while.

IMO good information to include would be...
    Types of fuels available
    Pump-out (human waist disposal)
Max boat length, width, and most importantly, draught.
Type of boat launching facilities (boat ramp, marine hoist, crane, etc)
    Mast crane
    Out of water storage
    Restaurant, snack bar, clubhouse
A link to the marina would also be nice, if available.

Careful, there can be marinas that are publically owned.  I would hate for this category to neglect the publically owned marinas (called Ports de Plaisance in French).  Because this would exclude opportunities for a lot of seaside facilities in France and Europe.

Thank you rakeinthecache, I stand corrected.Embarrassed
Come to think of it, there are many marinas owned and operated by municipalities to promote tourism in their area.

Ok folks, the Marinas Category is about to go for a vote. Does anyone have any heartburns about how it is structured?
