    Decorated Ceilings?

I just started working in the Fisher Building, [ http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM1YW3_Fisher_Building_Detroit_MI ] which has beautiful decorated ceilings.

What do you think about decorated ceilings as a category?

Is there a web site that gives the correct terminology for the ceilings and the types of features?

For example, in a Historical marker about the Fisher Building it refers to "Gold leaf dominates the hand-painted arcade ceiling". I would want to include an example of what an arcade ceiling was in the category description, so others could properly describe a less documented ceiling.

Well, I think this would be a tough one, as would any indoor category.  Some things to consider:

    - Decorated?  How decorated is "decorated?"  Some ceilings have murals on them, some ornate woodwork, and all sorts of things.  I think this might be hard to define.

    - Photographs.  Notoriously difficult to photographs adequately.  Lighting.  Distance.  Detail.

    - Acceess.   Some public buildings, maybe no problem; others could be problematic.

I know I've seen a lot of nice ceilings and include photos of them with some of my waymarks, but I'm not sure a category for them is workable, though if carefully crafted, perhaps.  Worth working on anyway.

Is that a mosaic?   Appears to be one, there is a category for them.

It could be a mosaic, could be a fresco. What's wrong with cross-posting? I mean I'm not going spend a lot of time looking up, my neck can't take the strain, but it sure beats McDonald's.

Cross-posting? What is that?Smile  I would never do that. Big Smile

I am all for cross-posting, however I will point out a category that something may fit in.  I don't see a need for someone to create a category when what they really are looking for is a place to submit a few locations they have photos of especially when they may fit quite nicely in another category.

I am in agreement with SQ as far as limitations of indoor locations as waymarks..

Having been on vacation recently I discovered a building with wonderful ceiling roses where I was given permission to photograph. While these aren't as impressive as the Fisher Building, I feel they are worth noting in the category concept gt.us mentioned.

As to the limitations of interior shots, I do understand as there many waymarks here in New Zealand that people could post except they are in museums and you can not take a picture due to this nation's copyright laws.

I lean towards having a decorated ceilings category and in the 'Instructions for Posting' just mention that you must ask for permission to take photos of the ceiling.

    Re: Decorated Ceilings?

I have not had problem taking photos of ceiling as far as being restricted from taking them.  I just am not not happy with my results.  Being indoor shots most often beyond what flash will illuminate thus to get decent photos a tripod is needed and most are not willing to do that (including myself most of the time).  Below are a few of my ceiling photos which are of impressive ceilings but not impressive photos.

    - Decorated?  How decorated is "decorated?"  Some ceilings have murals on them, some ornate woodwork, and all sorts of things.  I think this might be hard to define.

Example:  I visited a library's children section once that has taken the drop-celing tiles down, allowed the children to paint them, and put them back up.  So their celing is quite "decorated", but maybe not in the way the category seems to be going.

I think this category could be good.  Glad we can talk through all these little things before it just shows up in peer review. Big Smile

Would this be an "arcade" style ceiling?

Ideally, I would see a Decorated Ceilings category at 'educational'. If well written, it could educate the waymarker on different types of ceilings. It would be nice if it were possible for the waymarker to accurately identify the different features. Perhaps we could include tips on how to separately photograph and present all the different sections that go into a ceiling.

Bruces ceiling has many of the same 'components' as my ceiling, the arcades, and the rectangle sections.

I do enjoy the different categories that go into the different architectural components of a building. Before waymarking, I couldn't have told the difference between a Gargoyle and a chimera.

These are from the Cathedral Basilica of St Louis.  They are all mosaics as part of the one of the worlds largest collections of mosaics  with 83,000 sq ft and 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces.

    Re: Decorated Ceilings?

I think I'd vote yes, but I have a question.
Is there a category for painted ceilings, or churches? I think that's most of what will be posted.
Is there a category I could already post this?

I'd be more willing to vote yes if it was just painted/ mural or a mosaic, NOT just some ornate wood trim they picked up at home depot.

    Re: Decorated Ceilings?

In addition to the painted ceilings, and the mosaics mentioned previously here, I've seen some beautiful plaster molded ceilings. It would be interesting to have the different plaster molds highlighted, and even a link to places for more information on them.
