    Re: Some Help Finding Art*O*Mats

I've had the Costa Mesa CA Art O Mat in my unfinished folder forever. I need to get my photos off another computer, but this is just the incentive to get it posted...and work on some of my backlog. Don't you hate it when life gets in the way of Waymarking?

It's incorrectly listed as the one in Detroit. The link takes you too the owners MySpace page. The other is still in Ferndale. That link goes to the comic book store's site. The third MI machine is not yet listed.

It looks like it's in Amarillo. Apparently, some of them get moved. However, this doesn't seem to happen often. The on in Boise looks a lot like the one you visited in ATL, but it's orange not yellow.

This link http://www.artomat.org/locations.php# shows the machines and there current locations. Most places that get one tend to hang on to them. Others like the one currently in Ann Arbor have an owner, but not a permanent location. The one in Ferndale, MI is owned by the same person, but the location intends to let her keep it there as long as she wishes. They're heavy and no fun to move around.

I'm not sure how the group handles the category as far as whether a waymark gets archived if a machine gets moved. Hopefully an update will be sufficient, but if a machine should travel farther than the proximity alert, a new waymark looks to be a possibility.

On a personal note, when we first looked into the category, we found the one now in Ann Arbor. It was in Berkeley, MI. It had been waymarked, so we went to check it out. We got to talk to the owner for a bit and have since become friends. When we got home, instead of writing up a visit, I wrote a new waymark. The original's coordinates were about a block and a half off, and lacked a decent description.

I got the proximity alert and went ahead anyway. It got approved, although it shouldn't have. TPTB got wind and wanted the group to archive it, but by then the owner of the machine and Art*O*Mat's founder had joined the group and liked my write up better, so both remained.

Since becoming friends with the owner, we've been able to keep track of the two relocations of her first machine, by attending opening night (with GPS in hand, thank you very much). Her second machine, like I said doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

We went with her to opening night of MI's 3rd machine in Kalamazoo and got to meet Clark Whittington, founder.

Any other questions, just let me know.

    Great story.

The Art*O*Mat I located moves too but just a bit. They move it from floor to floor in the building that it is located in on the college campus.

    Re: Some Help Finding Art*O*Mats

Thanks to DopeyDuck for finding the one at The Living Room - Costa Mesa, CA.

The one in Lakeland was waymarked when it was located in Orlando.

Following the rules, I'm pretty sure it can be a separate waymark, there shouldn't be any proximity alert when trying to post. As far as the waymark in Orlando goes, it really can't be updated until someone tries to visit it and finds it gone.

    Re: Some Help Finding Art*O*Mats

Very cool! This is the coolest looking one out of the bunch, as far as I'm concerned. One of the contributing artists makes miniature Art*O*Mat machines out of Legos, and the Space one is considered to be rare. My wife was totaly geeked when we got one.

Yes, unless I'm mistaken, (and I never am. Yeah OKAY...)
If you look at the Sam Flax Waymark and compare it to the Art*O*Mat website. Click on machines and the page shows pix of all of them. Click on a machine and it shows a larger image with its location below.

    Re: Some Help Finding Art*O*Mats

I went to find the Art-O-Mat at OOP!! in Providence, RI, because it was on the way.  Lo-and-Behold! I find it!  I get my item, I take pictures and talk with the sales person there.

I go back home to log it in.  First, I am having trouble with filling in the fields, since the art-o-mat web site doesn't have the details when you click the icon.  I try to go through the blog, but it's not keyword searchable that I can see, and I was getting frustrated.

I then go to Google and make a random search for Art-o-mat OOP Providence and, Lo-and-Behold! I find a waymark entry for an Art-O-Mat for OOP - much to my disappointment.  It has been archived, done by BlackstoneVal.  Here is some info since that posting.  The store has moved some.  As reported in the archived waymark, it was on Thayer Street in College Hill, on the north side of Brown University.  Where I found it is at the corner of Eddy and Westminster Street, near the Providence City Hall, and somewhat near the Dunkin Donuts Center.  Another thing is that the Art-o-mat is differently decorated, so I don't know if this is a re-re-furbishment of the original, or a replacement of the original one.

So, my questions is:  is this a new waymark or a ressurection of the old one?

    Re: Some Help Finding Art*O*Mats

    New waymark.

The other is archived so it is fair game in my opinion.

I am not a member of the group so cannot speak definitively but I would submit it and see what happens.

Like the Bean says, It's a new waymark as far as I can tell. Let me know what fields you are having issues with, I might be able to help.

    OK, Thanks!

Reviewing the fields, I think that I can make a reasonable guess on the artists and the kinds of art that can be purchased from my pictures.  But I didn't see the name of the person who refurbished the machine and whether this machine is the same that was found, previously.

You can also try to contact the place you found it and ask them whos stuff they got in their machine. Or just pick some names from this page. http://www.artomat.org/artomat_artists.php
I don't think it really matters. It would have been refurbished by Clark Whittington. As far as I can tell there are no others posted in RI. and can't tell if there ever were. There's nothing in the one page of past history. So post that puppy!

    Re: Some Help Finding Art*O*Mats

So now I have a question.

I just found a non Art-o-Mat, art-o-mat. I was picing something up at the University of Oregon and there it was. Excitement ensued followed by disappointment  when I realized it wasn't a real, original Art-o-Mat. The Machine Project is a local endeavor featuring University of Oregon students art.

Then while I was trying to research it for this thread I ran across this link for another type of art vending machine.

Then this independent Art-o-Mat style vending machine

And this piece of art about the real deal Art-o-Mats that I thought you might like.

So to my question. Should the category be expanded to accept all types of the vending art phenomenon or a new category be explored?

Oh and there is a  new Art-o-Mat in Chandler AZ that was unveiled this week. Someone needs to waymark it.

But the above article indicated that the creator of the Art-o-Mat is thinking of stopping the project at 100 machines. Currently there are 80 out there including one in Austria and only 28 have been waymarked.
