Fly like an Eagle proposal -

Ok Peer Reviewers, I tried a while back to get a category for my group and it was denied.  I believe the focus of the group was mis-understood and thus I received many negative comments.  I am looking for everyone's support in getting this category up so please take time to read this.

The group is called "Fly like an Eagle" because my Website is EagleFederation.com.  Of course the symbol is an eagle.  I have a group called Eagle Knights and we basically do things like learn self defense, stay in shape, and study the bible.  I recently wanted to post a few virtual caches to give the group places to go that had a value such as a lesson or made use of some skill.  I emailed the local reviewer on Geocaching.com to find out why I was unable to post a virtual cache and he told me about waymarking.  After learning about waymarking I found that it would be the perfect way to make points for the group and also get input from others in the community.

The "Fly like an Eagle" category and the EF group are both open to the public because I believe the community will suggest waymarks that would be great for the EF Group, we are not a hidden group of people that want seclusion, and we like to intermingle with others.

We are a group of Christians but the group is not closed to those who do not claim Christianity.  I just don't want to post any waymarks that are either direct attacks on Christianity or places that a Christian would not be expected to go for example an area of sacrifice to another god, or a topless bar would be places that I would not consider good waypoints for this group.  Good waypoints would be a mountain top, the ocean floor that requires the participant to learn snorkeling or scuba diving, or even a helicopter tour of an interesting area.

This group is not a way for people to get a high number of waypoints in an unethical manner or an attempt to push religion on anyone.

I am asking you to vote favorably for this category and then feel free to join the group and make posts.  I will accept many different types of waypoints.

Note: I did not add variables but will do that soon.  I want to make sure I allow for picture posting and give proper thought to the different variables.

Thank you for your consideration and please vote -
    Thanks,
    Allen

First, thanks for posting in the forums. I wish you would have done so before sending the category off to peer review.

Unfortunately, I don't see the category faring any better in peer reveiw this time.  You have a good idea for a group but it doesn't fit the categories format.

The proposal has no formal focus that can be defined, therefore any waymarks that you may have submitted would be waymarkable in other existing categories and it is much to subjective. you will have only problems with the submissions because it is not defined specifically what is looked for.

Your group doesn't necessarily even have to have a category to accomplish its goals.

..."for members of the Eagle Knights of Eagle Federation to travel for advancement."

You could use the existing group structure and existing categories by spelling out different feats to attain different levels for your Eagle Knights group members.

    ie:
Level One: visit one waymark in each department.
Level Two: Create a waymark in 10 of the 15 waymarking departments.
Level Three: visit 5 Mountain Summit waymarks
Level Four: Visit 15 National Historic Register location

You could issue challenges via your group email function.
First to submit a new History Category waymark for the Holly Springs depot and get it approved  achieves the title of  Historian.

Submit 10 History category waymarks become a Grand Historian
Submit  and visit 10 Mountain Summits and become a Mountaineer
Submit 5 Literary Sites and become a Scholar

Each time a "Knight" made an advance in level, the group could have an officer level change with a different title attributed to them as a reward. So

This type of goal for your Eagles would allow the group to function, expand users GPSr use and greatly enhance knowledge of the local area and its history.

This would be a new use of groups that I think is actually quite interesting to think about. Beyond what has been used in groups before but with great potentials for a club type use.

It took me a while to figure out what you are trying to do - I think.  You are just not phrasing it in waymarking terms we can understand.

Basically you are trying to combine the efforts of your group and waymarking by building your own icon.

What I think you want to do is model a new category like the LUCKY 7 category.  I would probably vote against it because there already is a LUCKY 7 category, but I think that is what your goal is generally and what we can understand and relate to.

Or I am horribly misunderstanding the entire situation.

I have to agree with the other posts in the thread.  I don't think your category fair any better this time around.  Your category does not have any specific focus other than good locations.  Your category would be one that I think would fit into the currently non-existent "Private categories"  I had started a discussion on a few months ago.  I just don't think it will go in the current waymarking format.

Bean, That's a really cool use of the group function. Are there any groups like that now? Must be why they have the "Group not interested in category" link. (This is probably common knowledge to most of you....I've only been here, like, 15 minutes)

It's not exactly the same, but we have a group for Flickr Waymarkers.

It was basically set up so that we could send out group emails to everyone to update them about what was happening with our flickr waymarking group. Flickr doesn't have that capability.
