    Re: Newbie here !! HELP!

I have been all over this site for the past three days, and I am still totally confused as to how to find things.  It doesn't seem to be easy.  Filtering will only show me things within 200 miles.  How about if we are going to Southern CA from Oregon and are going to Waymark along the way?  How do we find things past 200 miles?  I want to see things for all of Oregon - not just 200 miles - there's not much around us in any 200 miles directions.  Can I just call up a town and see what's there?  I've tried several things just seem to be going in circles.  Any easily explained directions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,  Sue  :)

Also, just getting onto this forum was confusing - it said I couldn't post a new topic, or respond to anything!  Help!

I would try using the zip code from the waymarks page. Be sure you have clicked show map. If the area doesn't have many, the map on the right will only have a few, but use the the - to zoom out, until all 20 will show. You can click on any of the icons, and it will tell you which waymark it is. If you page through, and zoom out in the map, you will eventually see all the waymarks, in 'rings' from your center starting point.

I have a funny feeling that pocket queries for waymarks will be available soon, as the pocket query screen now shows

    Re: Newbie here !! HELP!

I too have had trouble with the searching aspect of the site, as well as accessing the forums at all more often than not.

To me it seems that the waymarking search is heavily weighted towards categories, but if you don't know what category something would be in, it may be hard to find.  I have had better luck using the Google Advanced Search to find something specific or to see if a waymark I am considering posting already exists.

In case you are unfamiliar with how to do this, just go to google.com and click on the "Advanced Search" link to the right of the box with the cursor in it. Once there, I just put waymarking.com in the bottom box labeled "Search within a site or domain" and put whatever I am interested in searching for in the top box labeled "Find web pages that have...all these words:"

    Here is an example http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all&q=whatever+site%3Awaymarking.com&btnG=Search

    Re: Newbie here !! HELP!

Whenever I am going to another area I just pan the map to the area. When you pan teh map a search from map center button appears. if you select that you can see whatever is in the area on the list. I can pick and choose what it is I want to see if it is an urban area. If you zoom in a bit and pan down your route you will see what is available in the more rural areas as you pan the map. Not perfect but it works and you can see the waymarks in the list as you look around .
