Waymark creation bug - cannot make a variable be optional

One of the variables ("Special category") in the US Benchmarks Category is supposed to be Optional.  I created this variable and have never been able to make it optional, although I have tried many times, as several people have complained to me that it acts like it is not optional.

In the "Your Variables" page, the "Special category" variable is listed as "Yes" in the "Optional?" column.

At the bottom of the editing screen for this variable, the box called "Check here if variable is optional" is checked and has been checked from the beginning.

I'm thinking the bug is that if a dropdown list exists for a variable, it cannot be made to act optional although all variable editing screens say that it is categorized as optional.

I'm logging a mark today and get this rejection message: "You must select an option from the dropdown list.", so I'm reminded again about this long-standing bug.

    Please fix this; I can't.
