How do I search for waymarks by the code number. I tried to put the number (WM7AK0) in the search box for waymarks on the front page but I get nothing. Help?

Often one of the first things someone hears about Waymarking, after it being the replacement for Virtuals and Locationless Caches, involves a reference to McDonald's. Typically this seems to be a comment presented by those from Geocaching that still wish that Virtual Caches would return.

While those of us that have been involved with Waymarking for more than a year, some of us are nearly two and a half years, understand the scope of Waymarking is far beyond its roots but some back history might be of value to those coming in now as interest levels are increasing. What follows is a hope to explain how we reached the point we are at today. The accuracy of this posting is as close to the way I remember this all falling into place.

Set the wayback machine for 2003. Geocaching's primary activity was about locating containers with logbooks but there was still Virtuals being created. The main issue was that Virtuals were supposed to be in places where a physical cache could not exist. But still people kept trying to make more Virtuals and despite many suggestions like hiding an extremely small container or using data to create an offset, people still wanted to get this 'hard to come by' icon. A concept often refered to as the "Wow Factor" had also not succeeded in making Virtuals work properly. What one finds interesting another does not. The subjective nature of being interesting just could not be quantified and since the game of Geocaching was supposed to be primarily about hidden containers it was finally decided to phase out Virtuals.

But what to do? Many members of Geocaching still wanted to be able to make locations where they could just see something instead of having find a hidden container. The focus of the location was of key importance and some people just wanted to share these locations without the concern of a physical placement. Thus was born Waymarking. But instead of repeating the problems found in Virtuals, a new plan was brought forward. By organizing locations into basic groups then subdividing by more specific content people could create and search for locations that met their specific tastes.

Groundspeak first created several 'seed' categories to beta test and get some feel for how this new game could work. And in that time the first Waymark was created "McDonald's", as a sign that this would not be as restrictive as Virtuals had been. That bears further comment. The reason that McDonald's was introduced was to show people that Waymarking was going to be set up as a far more open approach to the places of interest people wanted to share. A kind of "anything goes" style where everyone could find their own place to share locations.

Next, the existing Locationless caches were offered the chance to migrate over to Waymarking as the second set of 'seed' categories. Some adjustments had to be made but most of them that did transfer over did so pretty much as they were originally created. As forum discussions about possible new categories continued, some were added over time. This would be the third set of 'seed' categories which would also be the last.

Once Waymarking had established a basic scheme of how categories would work and how people could create Waymark entries into these categories, it was time to move on to the version we have today. Around the time of Waymarking 2.0 the addition of the "Group Management System" was introduced. Premium members could create groups for the purpose of making a category for inclusion into the list of existing categories. The difference is that Geocaching submissions are handled on a local level whereas Waymarks are handled by people with a specific interest in the category topic. This is a much more global approach which is needed because nearly every Waymarking category can span the globe.

Anything of interest to you can likely be added to an existing Waymark category and if such an area does not exist then it likely can be created. However to view Waymarking based on the belief that it is nothing more than a place that shows people fastfood restaurants is the same as viewing Geocaching as a place that shows people guardrails and lampposts. Each game has very enjoyable aspects and some that are not as appealling. In here, you set the limits yourself.

Consider the entire Waymarking website as online library of places to visit, complete with descriptions, maps and images. Be selective in what you wish to look for, be open to expanding your horizons and above all else enjoy sharing the world through this game. Likely it is far more interesting than some would lead you to believe and hopefully you will find places where you can contribute to building onto this game. When in doubt, ask! We love to help people enjoy the game!

As a newbie I want to ask whats the difference between waymarking and geocaching? The question is probably obvious and I probably seem really stupid right now but I don't know what to do!!!! Can anyone help?

60CSx Waypoints Help!!!

Hello I am new to the whole owning a GPS so I studied and finally came up with the Garmin 60CSx. so here is my question: When I am on a map and I see something I want to mark on the map I hit enter and I fill in all the information what I want to call the waypoint, icon etc. I will have about an accuracy of about 12-9ft every time but when I go back at a later day to revisit the spot marked the mark is off about 100ft or so when I am standing right next to it. Then on other days it could be off 50ft and so on and so forth. What is the cause of this. Like I said I am new to all of this so talk dumb to me lol like 3rd grade level lol. Thanks for any help you can provide.

While waymarking yesterday we came upon headstones with plaques for Daughters of the American revolution. Besides Historical Markers are there any other categories they would fit in?

We also found a Zinc Headstone, is there a category for that?

Waymark, GSAK and DeLorme

I have been sending waymarks to GSAK where they have have there own icon. But when I send them to my DeLorme PN-40 they are simply waypoints. This does not leave me the ability to log on my GPS that they are found. Am I missing something? As an organizing tool it would be nice to upload find right from my GPS.

By the way we are new to waymarking and enjoy using it to get my kids to look at things and places; not just drive by.

This is why I never started waymarking...

I've been caching for seven years, and on this trip to disney, I thought I'd try waymarking.
If this is how most people play, I don't think I'll be back.

Many categories require a picture to be uploaded, and it seems you have been only logging those that dont require one.....

you mean to tell me that you spent several days in disney and took no pics? you know that one of the main aspects of this game is the uploading/sharing of photos and stories, but you cant seem to get that one right either....

they removed your favorite fountain? where is your picture showing this?**
it is the people like you that give waymarking a bad name.....

its a wonder i dont delete all of your logs to all of my waymarks that do not have a picture uploaded--required or not.

Hello,

For all interested, this is my first post.

At the risk of sounding vain, I was wondering... How'm I doing? I have been reading the forums and see many gripes(well deserved gripes from what I'm reading) from category managers about new people posting waymarks. Spelling mistakes, not enough information, not the right information, not the right category, crappy photo's, etc... and newbie's adding new categories that have already been listed(I was going to add a listing for sea turtles, but after reading on the subject, I don't think I'll be doing that. Ever!)

Which lead's me to ask the question How'm I doing?

As a "newbie" to this I have been submitting waymarks with a passion. Not a hundred waymarks in a week kind of passion, but more, researching my submission and getting the information right. I have been denied 2 times, but the manager's were kind enough to tell me what was missing for a complete listing (THANK YOU!) and after resubmitting they were approved. I feel that's the job and I really appreciated the feedback(I am but a humble servant serving the waymarking god's). I can see myself truly getting into this and was wondering if some of you could give me some more feedback on the WM's that I have done. I know this may sound incredibly vain and narcissus, but just the same.....

I know some might say, you're WM's were approved what more do you want.
I am looking for guidance. That's all. So in the immortal words of former Mayor Koch, NYC, "How'm I doing?"(yes, I'm that old)

Also I must ask, how many waymarks must one submit/visit to achieve non-newbie status or join a category as a manager in an area that I feel I could contribute to?

I just tried to insert a link into my text on a cannon that killed a man after the war. Ex: (The Col. Simeon Sammons monument is well worth checking out.) <= I attempted to add the link and titled it Col. Simeon Sammons. That way "Col. Simeon Sammons is highlighted in blue and you click his name for the link to more info on him. In this case its the waymark that I just did on him. However it came out like this:

Walk the Dog

I enjoy GeoCaching and have a dog that I like to walk with. I have walked and cached the trails near my home with my dog. Walking the same trails all the time gets kinda boring especially knowing that there are other community trails out there. What I am looking for is the Waymarks for other nearby trails where I can walk my dog and GeoCache at the same time. How do I locate these? Does such a catagory exist? It seems to me some of these trails might overlap other interests . Is there a way to sort similar categories/waymarks based on attributes? So far the searches I have tried have returned nothing local. burt

Geocaches Along A Route != Waymarking, i.e. I Don't Get Waymarking

I have a problem (actually several but won't go into that here): I'm a geocacher. In the "early" days, I frequently used geocaches to find unique places along the routes I was traveling as well as my destination. Unfortunately with the elimination of virtual geocaches and other restrictions, that's not geocaching anymore. :-(

So wait, looks like waymarking is a better way to go to find interesting things. I'm driving cross-country (USA) on I80 which should have lots of interesting waymarks along it. However it appears that I am required to indicate what type of waymark I'm interested in. Well I'm the curious type so would like to see them all. So how do I "download" all the different waymarks?

Am I correct in believing from my reading that there is no such thing as waymarks along a route?

Another post asked about downloading waypoints into a GPSr. Of course I would want to download the points into a GPSr but this doesn't seem to be a straight forward procedure. Appears that waymarking is fundamentally different from geocaching in terms of finding waypoints. What is the "procedure" for finding waypoints?

Looking at the few postings on the forum versus geocaching, is waymarking the poor black haired cousin of geocaching that no one cares talking about?

I have seen that some people "visit" their own waymark listings. Technically you did visit the spot to get the pictures and info about the area. Is ths acceptable?

Missing waterfall?

A few weeks ago I submitted a waterfall (Moss Glen waterfall (granville)). Before I submitted it I searched to see if there was already one there by clicking on the waterfall category and looking on the map for an icon. After not seeing one, I submitted it, but it was rejected due to there already being one listed in that location, which is fine, being new to waymarking, I figured that I must have overlooked something.
Even now when I filter the waterfalls category,

I see many icons listed by others on the map but I still don't see one in that location.
There is however a properly marked waymark by user FiVermonter and it is clearly there and properly located.

Have Object, Need Category - Pair of Parabolic Echo Mirrors

I've been sifting through the Categories index, looking for an appropriate place to post this. Any ideas?

Outside a nearby science museum is a pair of parabolic dishes, each about 8' across, about 50' apart, and pointing directly at each other. Whisper into the focus of one and you can be clearly heard at the focus of the other.

Suggestions for where to post this? Searches for "echo", "mirror", "science", "technology", "math", "reflect", and other words that came to mind left me with no good options.

I expected that there would be a category of some sort for audible anomalies ... places to hear echoes or other things that reflect sound in interesting ways (tunnels, pipes, etc). Hmmm ... Audible Anomalies sounds like a good category name, come to think of it ...

Ideas?

Logging of Waymarks No GPS

I have been waymarking for a few months and purchased a new vehicle with GPS Nav System. I do waymarking as a family time acivity. At times I waymark alone if everyone else is busy. This makes it extremely difficult to log the photo with a gps when it's mounted in the vehicle. Usually there is no one around to ask if they can take my photo. I have been logging the vists and explaining in the log that the GPS used was in the vehicle. I hope that the criteria for logging vists utilizing gps units get's revised on some waymarks as technology advances such as I phones and blackberry phones with gps ability.

Old School Monuement

Hey guys, I am new here to Waymarking. I have a location I would like to make into a Waymark instead of a geocache due to it being close to a bank. The monument is dedicated to the Bluement College that was the forefront to Kansas State University. I looked through the monuments categories, then all the others, and just didn't find anything that really fit. Does anyone know a good category, or do I need to start a group to form a new one? Thanks.

One of our local towns has an old fashion fire truck in a big glass display case out in front of the current firehouse. It is simply 2 large tanks and a carriage and some type of pump system. It was towed behind a horse to the fire. They did an awesome job of restoring it and I'd like to WM it but the only thing I see is vehicle museums and this doesn't even qulify as a vehicle. Swizzle

I have a large cemetery monument with a lot of family history written all the way around it but I'm not sure how to go abouts finding the proper catagory for it and the dang grey box when posting a new WM is always in the way. Logging Visits

Hi, a newbie here. After doing a search for WMs to visit, I have found a few that I have already visited and some were before the time of the listing being posted.

I travel all around the Treasure Coast looking for photo ops and have found some I have already visited and some that I can set up as a WM for myself that aren't already listed. Now, I have many new places to visit that I didn't know existed and will offer great photographic opportunities.

My question is...can I still log my visit if I was there before it was listed? I have photos without myself or GPSr.

Incorrect information

Hi,

I have only just discovered this fascinating website and I was interested in the waymarks that have been logged where I live. I looked at one of the entries and a visitor has put incorrect information in the log. The name of the house and other information is not right.

My question is this... do I just leave the info? do I correct it in my own visit log? or do I contact the member and let them know they may have confused this place with one across the road?
