Of the 25 that have been waymarked, it appears that 6 may have been relocated.

Am I missing something here? Is there something rare or interesting about these in the US. Maybe a "cultural thing" that I'm missing.

Here in the UK they are ubiquitous, mundane, often dirty, and sometimes they cross over informally into the "public toilets" category recently discussed.

In an attempt to liven them up the bigger ones are sometimes decorated with murals or mosaics, which can go nicely into other categories.

In other words, those toilets that are not in shopping malls, gas stations, train stations, and so on. Instead it would be those toilets that can not be Waymarked in any other way. These are the toilets that appear in parks in North America or on high streets in Europe and Australasia.

The prime purpose is to serve us Waymarkers as way to let each other know where the closest toilet may be.

To avoid any privacy issues and respect for cultures that may not approve, there would be no requirement to photograph the toilet. However, there can be optional variables on the facilities. This would cover things like flush vs. latrine, running water to wash hands, baby change tables, and so on.

If this interests you please feel to join up at http://www.waymarking.com/groups/details.aspx?f=1&guid=99462ae7-c310-4bdc-9c79-44c2b0a36aca. One of our side interests that has developed has been visiting remote and abandoned fire lookout towers. While browsing through the categories, the closest one I could find is Lookout Towers, however it states that one of the logging requirements is to climb to the top. Some abandoned fire lookout towers may have the cupola on the top removed and/or have government signage prohibiting climbing the tower. I was hoping to post a couple of these towers as waymarks, but would not want to require a visitor to climb to the top, as that is something they should do at their own risk. After reading the description for the existing category, Lookout Towers, it seems these would not fit the category, and perhaps a separate category would be appropriate. Abandoned fire towers differ substantially from publicly accessible lookout towers in that they are often remote, and require considerable planning and effort to get to. Any thoughts?
Dedicated Benches on probation

I noticed the Dedicated Benches group only has two members let alone officers.

The real problem is that I don't have a good title for this so please read on and see what you think.

First some reasoning: I am an American Civil War buff, and often times find a great or even interesting story that goes along with a veteran. Where can this be waymarked?

Second, the limitations: This is not a category for duplications. If it is a Revolutionary War grave, it belongs there as well as any story or knowlege that goes along with that veteran. This would go for Medal of Honor graves. This leaves countless numbers of people that contributed a lot, or have a significant or even interesting past that needs to be told. I had thought about "graves of a famous person," but consider the abreviated story that follows:

I have been researching for several years the "Palmyra Massacre" (look for the waymark I posted for the complete story). I have been trying to find the graves of the subject, and have found one of them. The one has a very intersting story, that he was the one that was substituted for a previously selected man. While unremarkable in life, his death at age 20 seems to me to be tragic and remarkable because of first the circumstances and second the execution story.

This being said, to me the person would not go under a "famous person."

To me the waymark is about the story almost more than the location. If a person isn't able to generate a past of the person, this isn't the category that would accept the waymark.

Not to go to far, but I also can see a similar category for non-military graves... but again... no good thoughts on a name.

Active Quarries: Officers needed

Active Quarries is a very low-volume category, but we've lost one of the three active officers and are on probation. So, any volunteers to help fill the ranks?
New and Improved One-Room Schoolhouses Category

I've recently taken over the One-Room Schoolhouses proposed category and made some chages to it.

I've read the past comments from previous forum conversations and used those suggestions to design a decent category. I still think this one is doable and want to know if there's anyone willing to help me talk this one.

Submerged Communities are town's, villages, hamlet's or any other type of established areas of human existence who are wholley or partial submerged due to the construction of a dam or natural disaster that caused wide spread flooding. All efforts should be made to obtain coordinates and photo's from a vantage point that allows people to see a remnant of that past. Ex: A cellar hole, old road, stone walls, ect.. In the case that a town is wholley submerged then an overlook of the area with a compass bearing should be given to the general location.

If aquiring a photo in these areas is not feasible then a photo of a historical sign with information about the submerged community will be required. A website link with information about the dam / natural disaster and the community or communities effected is also required.

Its still a work in progress and I appreciate all of the good and the bad comments that will go with this. This is meant to be more then just a few rainbow pics. There is a whole array of different atmosphere optics that are rather pretty and worth some attention. The next time your out hunting for a new plaque or playground, look up. If there's a light rain and the sun's out look for a rainbow, sometimes a double and triple rainbow. Keep an eye out for sun dogs, solar pillars, arcs, redbows, fractured rainbows, glories and more.<br>
<br>
I've seen a couple different types of these Atmospheric Optics and I see more then most because I look for them. A couple days ago well waymarking some history signs I got a pic of a Redbow, a couple weeks ago I got a pic of a rainbow with 3 purple bands. I don't want to see ho-hum pics. Scenery is a big part of this and I reserve the right to be subjective. All you need is an Atmospheric Optic, Some scenery and the coordinates. This is a waymark that could literally be anywhere. I did a quick write up just to give an idea of what the group is about and will do a much better write up before its submitted. If the link doesn't work then go to spaceweather.com and scroll down to Atmospheric Optics. So who wants to join, enrollment is open? There's nothing being included that's excluded in the present category. There's nothing more noteworthy about aviaries that is not already covered in Birdwatching Locations. It's plain out redundancy.

Smithsonian Art Inventory

Smithsonian Art Inventory

Since this wonderful resource has been mentioned, I thought I'd start a thread on it.

I know I've been alerted to it before, but for some reason it didn't really click, but I've found it increasingly valuable. I wish more categories to which it applies would include it in the category description as a resource, and maybe even provide an optional variable for the IAS control number.

I think the search function is difficult to use. There is no field for geographic location - like state or city or zip code. Sometimes the "Owner" field can help. But, sometimes it's just hard to get enough information to do the search. But, I'm learning.

Does anyone know for sure if there is a way to contribute to it - particularly images?

In some ways it would make a great category. Somewhat like the National Register of Historic Places, it provides an objective list of sites to be included, with somewhat standard data fields. And a control number. The main problem is that almost everything listed there could be included in one or more of the existing categories, and I think that is a LOT of redundancy. That's speaking of sculptures, anyway. There are many other types of art included. And the problem with that is that a lot of them are located in museums. In general, I don't think it is a good idea to waymark items on display in museums.

Any other thoughts on this?

New Proposal: Banks?

I was wondering if anyone has thought of Banks as a category?

Our idea is to pursue you to find all interesting static manifestations of heraldry connected with aristocratic families (noble family coat of arms), burgher arms (used by famous commoners), church and knight orders, towns and (maybe) regions. State and country seals and coats of arms will be excluded (they are on every state building...).

The manifestations would be static (not on movable objects), not on flags or on infoboards (town signs) close to the roads. Probably only on well defined outdoor structures (buildings, bridges, statues, graves or tombs) and not on metal infoplates at entrances to official buildings...

We will be glad, if you share with us some creative ideas about the proper and acceptable defining of the category...

Mike aka Dorcadion

Can't get past the Group Vote.... This time one of the officers did not vote and the vote failed... again
I'm going to try again in a few days to see if that officer logs back on.

Has this ever happened to any of you and what did you do to fix the problem?
TransCanada Trails - Knew it would fail

Thanks for the feedback. This one was not ready to go out and I'll take the scolding but I warned the lead that this was going to fail after it was released.
