GIDEON-X:Yep, had the same problem............. then did the resize thing........... works ok..........but now I just set my camera to (640 X 480)(cannon SX100) and all is just fine......right from the camera to the page.
I set my camera down to a lower setting, also. Just so I could take more pictures on a long trip, etc. Mr. Globtrotter was giving me some line about the human eye can only see so many pixels, so the higher megapixels are a waste..
BUT I got the flip side of that this week. An advertizing agency asked if they could use one of my photos, and asked for the original, and they were disappointed that it was only 1.3 megapixels. I immediately set my setting up to the 3.1 megapixel, becuase I have a huge card in my camera, and all the hard disk space I need, so I was being penny wise and pound foolish. I'm wondering if I should bump it up to the 5 megapixel, even.

I also like having higher resolutions for when I want to crop aggressively.

northernpenguin: BruceS:It is like what you said in another thread you can always throw information or in this case extra parts of the photo if not needed but if you don't collect it to begin with you end up having to go back.
I always shoot at the maximum resolution my camera supports. If you don't collect enough information, you end up having to go back ... and realize that the lighting only occurs twice a year, or something moved, or it's raining. No, I've learned the hard way you only get one chance to take the perfect photo - and that is when you see it. Never count on a do-over for photography, unless you're shooting with studio lighting. Shoot maximum megapixels, and resize/crop as needed.
Couldn't agree more! Occasionally I've been able to reshoot a site when the first photo was bad, but not often. At the highest resolution and a 2G card, I can take a lot of photos, but carry extra cards just in case. Downloaded the recommended Microsoft Powertoy but I can't find where it went or any directions on how to use it. Microsoft hid it somewhere. All I can find is a "readme" file, which tells me nothing.

Oooh - Oooh (Horshak imitation), I know that one. Right click on the picture, and select resize. It renames when it resizes with the name of the size - so its something like DCP1023 Large.
Hmmmm. Okay, I'm being real dense here. I did remember seeing some reference to a right click, but does that mean I have to exit my photo editor (Corel Paintshop Pro) to do that? Can I do a batch? Can I select a specific size? In Paintshop I've been selecting 600 for either width or height, whichever is longer. And, then where does the new, resized copy get placed in the same directory? I'm starting to run into HD space issues on my aging laptop - just couldn't bring my new Dell XP with me. Got a nifty external drove, though - 320G in my shirt pocket!

I do it in Windows Explorer, but I think I've also done it in the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer.
The size choices are Small - 640x480 Medium 800x600 Large 1024x768 and Handheld 240 x 320
It renames and puts them in the same directory it came from, leaving the original intact.

Once you've installed the Image Resizer Powertoy, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Use Windows File Explorer to navigate to the folder where the .jpg pictures are that you want to resize.
Select the pictures that you want to resize with a single click. Highlight contiguous groups by clicking the first file, pressing "shift" and clicking the last file. Highlight individual files by holding "ctrl" and clicking the individual file names.
Right click on any of the highlighted files and select "Resize pictures"
A menu will pop up where you can select the size.
It will make resized copies in the same directory.
If you are adventurous you can fiddle with the advanced options.

Some more (budget friendly) tools - if you want to resize or crop, or perform some corrections like horizon straightening or mild exposure fixes. - Try using The Gimp, which is a powerful yet free image editing package. This is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. If you shoot in RAW format, make sure you grab the UFRaw plug in so you can read those file formats. RAW has benefits over JPG when it comes to difficult lighting/exposure situations, or when taking night photos. There is a plugin available that will make GIMP look/feel just like Photoshop.
- Another batch resizer tool (for Windows) that is freeware is Irfanview. It's strength is the sheer number of file formats supported, and the ability to resize a bunch of photos at once.
- If you run Windows Vista, the previously mentioned Powertoy is not compatible with Vista! Don't fear, there is an option - VSO Image Resizer duplicates this functionality for Vista users.
