    Category Proposal: "Entertainment Awards"

I'd like to create (or see, if it already exists) an "Entertainment Award" category. Such a category would be quite specific as to what WMs it would include. I'd say.. any Oscar, Emmy, Tony, or Grammy on public display would do the trick. I'd be curious to know what people think. SmileBig SmileSmile

    Re: Category Proposal: "Entertainment Awards"

    What about non-US entertainment awards?

This would be more "Global" if extended to other regional awards like Golden Globes, BBC World Music, Canadian Gemini awards, etc.

Excellent point. I know that many other countries have film awards.

The OP said: any Oscar, Emmy, Tony, or Grammy on public display

Considering the following comments here and in the Trophies thread, we can safely assume Entertainment Awards held in other countries that would be on public display would also be accepted.

Do you have a more indepth question because I've taken the OP at face value... Is there something that you're thinking that I'm not?

Maybe you could also waymark the locations where the awards shows take place.

And extra points for snapping a celeb falling into a taxi on their way home from the awards! Wink

    Only kidding.

    Re: Category Proposal: "Entertainment Awards"

That's a good point - is the category more interested in the awards on display (what about ones on display indoors? How to handle).

Some award shows migrate - the Gemini's are always moving around from province to province. Will we waymark that a show was held here, or should it be recurring at the same location to qualify?

    Re: Category Proposal: "Entertainment Awards"

Good questions and comments. The idea here is to WM any or all trophies/statuettes pertaining to the entertainment industry. In our area (southern California), I can think of two--one Oscar and one Tony--right off the bat. The Oscar is on the campus of University of California, Irvine. The Tony is at the South Coast Repertory Theater in Costa Mesa. Both are public, prominent displays with special pedestals, lighting, graphics, and so on. I remember seeing another Oscar in Washington, D.C., and I've heard there are more at places like Apple/Pixar, and the like. As for creating a WM of the the award venues, well.. that would probably fall into a different category.

Thanks again for the input, I'll submit the cat soon. SmileWinkSmile

    How predominant are these?

There's usually an annual ceremony for each type of these awards in numerous categories (you'd have to google to find out just how many categories there are for each entertainment award in existence around the planet) and there is a winner (therefore an award given) to one person or group in each of these categories every year. Some of these annual award ceremonies have been going on since the 1940's. Some of the awards are stashed away in people's private homes and others are placed on public display. Considering the vast number of these in existence and the limitless number that could be in the future, I think there's a good bet there's enough to make a category worthwhile.

When you're in California, look around. Wink

Somehow, I read this as places that entertainment awards were given. Like the venue where they are held? That actually seemed interesting to me.

That might be a pretty small number. Of the major awards, the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys are (for the most part) handed out in Los Angeles. The Tonys still originate from New York, of course. By focusing on the awards themselves, I believe the number of possible WMs is fairly large. Also, getting inside an awards venue might be tricky. The Kodak Theater, for example, is part of a really large, secure complex, and all most people ever see is the signage. WinkCoolWink

I would think that there are VERY few of these on display anywhere. Almost all of these awards would be kept by the individuals. Until I see more evidence that these are way more prevalent, I would have to vote no to this category as I currently understand it.

I've seen a Grammy at the Hard Rock Cafe in Munich. The OP cited two or three. I'm wondering if this might be another Fireworks Trees in the respect that nobody thinks they're very permanent or prominent until they start looking for them. Maybe, maybe not. I'd be interested to know more.

There are Brittish Emmy or Academy type awards. I'm sure the Germans must have their own. Then there is the European Music awards (The ones ABBA got their start on). As of about ten years ago, the Emmys were in NYC.

I'm not saying its a better or worse choice for a category, it's just what came to mind when I saw the words.

I think the part that fireworks trees had a hard sell on was proving they were a permanent fixture. I think they had to go twice. I think that might be a place you could focus on when selling a cat for awards statues.

    National Portrait Gallery

    Coppola's Winery

    Northampton Museum and Art Gallery

Including the awards from other countries might net more but this is all I could locate online.

    Re: Category Proposal: "Entertainment Awards"

Oops. Forgot to mention two things: 1) Some awards organizations will actually *give* the winner a second statue if they put the first on public display. 2) Some winners leave their awards in their will to schools or museums. After all, most of the Oscar winners from the 1940's are probably deceased.

There was a time when many more were on public display, that being when more Planet Hollywood restaurants were in business, however there are not as many of these locations.

As for the music industry I would imagine that Dolly Parton probaby has one on display somewhere, the Cleveland Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is sure to have a few, and Graceland probably has something on display. I think even the Liberache museum in Las Vegas has something.  Of course all of this is speculation, but I think there is potential for finding these statuettes.
