    Howard Johnson's Restaurants

Up for peer review. Perhaps not as glamorous as other chains, but still. If you're old enough to remember them, then you'll start thinking about their clamstrips. Mmmmmm, clamstrips....Stick out tongue

Oh uh, anyway, I hope you like the write-up and vote yea.

Maybe if they changed their uniform policy, that might help ;)

Already voted.  Thanks for putting it together.

Yes, that's where I learned I like fried clamstrips.

    Re: Howard Johnson's Restaurants

Is there a website that lists where the old Howard Johnsons were? I have a vague memory of a HoJo on Telegraph Road near Ford in Dearborn, but when I Google, all I get is the current HoJo's.

The last time I remember stopping at a HoJo was 1993, driving between Memphis and Nashville. It was the old style building. It was around 20 miles West of Nashville on the South Side of the Highway East of the exit road, up on a hill. Does anyone else remember that HoJo's?

I did find this website for research http://www.highwayhost.org/Orangeroof/map.html

It looks like the site isn't being updated.

I can see if the building is still there during our Thanksgiving trip up north. Given how far off-course I go to see my family and friends in Kentucky, 20 miles towards Memphis is easy.

It actually looks like its still there, http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=q0p0t37rrxdm&style=o&lvl=1&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=14463712&encType=1

    Even the same orange roof!

If it's daylight, stop in at the Parthenon http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM10MB  It's a quick stop, but worth it.

Isn't that the darnest thing to find in Tennessee! It's now on my list. Thanks for the recommendation!

Once the category is approved, I'll add the site and a couple others to it. The guy who maintains the Orangeroof is currently working two jobs.

Originally when I started writing it up, there were three still in operation. The restaurant in Bangor, ME closed before I'd finished.

I liked the look of the cat.

I forgot to mention in my vote that I think if it was a restaurant location it should be allowed to show what is there now. Even if it is only a parking lot or something. If memory serves (and often it doesn't) I think that only locations that still have a building are allowed.

Well, just waiting to hear if it passed. Hopefully it will. I like the idea of adding locations that have something else there. That would be along the same lines as the closed drive-ins category. Also will be adding the locator web-link. Thanks for your input.

    Hooray, it passed!

I'll be making some adjustments to include a link to the locator website and also to allow for locations of Hojo's that have been bulldozed, much like the option in Darkened Drive-Ins.

I will however not be including the hotel/motels. The idea of this category was for the architecture of the Restaurants and the Gate Lodges. The accomodations were/are just big concrete boxes, now owned by Econo Lodge or Hampton Inns or Best Western. Anyone interested in them is free to start up a category for them.

Thanks for another great Americana category!

Never cared much for HoJos, but they were undeniably part of the American landscape for a generation or two.
