    Upload image from URL

    I've always wanted to be able to upload an image from a URL rather than from my local computer.  Most of my images I upload to flickr, and then I have to upload again to waymarking.com (or geocaching.com for caches.)

    It would be nice to have options for "upload from local computer", "upload from URL"

    I'm pretty sure I brought this request up at the 'town-hall' meeting a while back.  It is a great and useful idea!

    Expanding this a bit, an option for use images from Waymark <WMXXXX>, or link to image at <URL> would be handy too - as this could be used to re-use images from cross-posted waymarks.

    Re: Upload image from URL

    I think you can insert these images in the long description using HTML tags, just as you would for a photo from a gallery.   I will do this sometimes when I am crossposting and want to use the same photos in the description - actually referencing another waymark's gallery.

    There is, however, no way to do this for the waymark gallery itself.

    I think there is a good reason for this.  If the waymark depends on photos residing on another server, whether it by my locals server or one such as flicker, it compromises the integrity of the waymark.  Suppose someone deletes the photos from flicker or the account goes bad, or my local server goes down or I die!  What happens to the waymark?

    Not being technically savvy, I'm not sure what is feasible, but it seems to me that once a photo is uploaded to the Waymarking.com server, then it ought to be available to be used across the system so that one could poplulate a waymark gallery from photos already in the system.

    From what was said about the recent change in the uploading system for photos, it sounds as if something like this may be in the works.  This has consistently been one of the most requested features.

    Uploading a photo using a URL and using HTML to display a photo are two different animals.

    Simply stated, uploading from a URL copies the image file over and it's in the gallery without being dependent on the original site. In this respect, it works just the same as uploading an image from a harddrive. It does not matter what you do with the image on the original site. It won't affect the image that's been uploaded into the gallery.

    Agreed. Uploading from other sources into the Waymark Gallery is a good idea. Trusting another site to maintain integrity is a bad idea. Case in point A legacy waymark of mine needing updating

    Jake warned me about this long ago, and I didn't heed his advice, so now I will be spending the winter correcting all of mine for trying to take the easy way... well done me {read as "idiot"}
