    Found disk

    Hello,

I was GeoCaching today in Guam and found a disk type survey mark on the ground nearby.  I tried to look it up and could not find anything about it.  I would like to log it but dont really know what to do.  I looked at the waymarking site and just read into confusion.  I have the cords and took a picture of it.  Its on the small island of Guam so I doubt anyone has found it before.  I am in the United States Navy stationed here.  Thanks for you help.

Please upload a photograph of the benchmark so I can see what you are talking about.

    Re: Found disk

You can either upload the image to Flickr/Photobucket or even as part of a Geocaching cache log.

Then copy the link to it and post that here.

    Like this... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2323/2344642874_003c335d1b.jpg

If you like, you can add the HTML tags to show it too.. like img src={location of image inside quotes} inside the standard triangle brackets

    Re: Found disk

According to Internet sources, in 1994-95 there was an establishment of the Guam Geodetic Network [which had been authorized in 1993], including primary, secondary and tertiary networks. The project replaced the existing inadequate triangulation network, much of which had been disturbed or destroyed with a world standard, high precision network...Although a small island, some 2630 points were coordinated...This project was awarded the 1997 Excellence in Surveying Award by the Institution of Surveyors, Australia.

You would probably have to establish a Guam Geodetic Network Benchmark Category along the lines of the Australian Trig Category.

You could try this web site:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since Guam is a US Territory, wouldn't Guam Benchmarks be postable in the USA Benchmarks category, without creating a new category?

This bit is from wikipedia in Guam:

"After the war, the Guam Organic Act of 1950, which established Guam as an unincorporated organized territory of the United States, provided for the structure of the island's civilian government and granted the people U.S. citizenship.[3]".

    Re: Found disk

I have contacted all of the members of the "Recovered US Benchmarks" Category asking them to respond to the Forum discussion re: found disk or contact me.   Hopefully you will have your answer soon.

I agree with globetrotters.us that they should be listed in USA Benchmarks. Granted they aren't in the contential US but do are Hawaii and Alaska included?

Last I checked Hawaii and Alaska are states Smile  This disk should be included as Guam is a US territory.  Also it should be noted that NOAA NGS lists several survey markers in Guam.  I was not able to determine if this particular one is listed there however without having coordinates.

    I sent you an e-mail.

Guess you deleted it as spam or did not get it.

Guam is a part of the NGS projects but will have to look further into the data base.

DaveD and I just talked about Guam and setting one of the GEOCAC Benchmarks there.

There are many Shell casings that were used for benchmarks there as well maybe you will run across one of them too.

This Guam FBN GPS survey and geodetic leveling campaign will provide the horizontal and

vertical integration and positional improvements required to support the diversity of GIS,

engineering, geophysical, charting and mapping applications required within the National Ocean

Service (NOS), other Federal and local government agencies, and private sector requirements.

Using the specifications consistent with the NGS Height Modernization initiative, NGS will

conduct an integrated survey program to provide positional accuracies better than 2 cm in the

horizontal and 2 cm in the ellipsoidal components.

    Re: Found disk

I agree with Bruce, although I do not claim to speak for the group as a whole in any way. My personal opinion is that we should allow marks in states, US territories, and other US marks placed outside US jurisdiction; I would imagine that third point would be controversial, however. (I just note that there are marks in the NGS database on foreign lands - for instance, TV0462 (WEST END), on the British Virgin Islands. Similarly, it would not surprise me if there are US Army Corps or US War Department marks in the Pacific or in Cuba.)

I also do not claim to speak for the whole Recovered US Benchmarks group, but my personal opinion is that we should allow benchmarks in US Territories.

Thanks for all of your help!  I am going to submit it as required or try to figure it out.
