    Statistics

The new blurb on the home page talks about having gone over the 150,000 benchmark in total number of waymarks posted, and 800 separate categories.  High fives all around!  Esp. to the Groundspeak staff who have provided us with such a great hobby!!

Here are a couple of other stats I would like to know.

How many unique contributors have posted waymarks?
From how many countries are there waymarks posted?
How many visit logs have been posted?
How many waymarks have visit logs posted?

There are other stats I'd love to see, like a country and state breakdown by number, but these are the ones about which I am most curious!

This is not so much of a statistic, but what about a list of waymarks that have been on for the longest period of time and still have not had a single visit logged. Huh?

    Cool!  Ambrosia!

So, I thought I'd check out WM1 - A McDonalds in Seattle by bootron on 08/11/2005 (I guess we can blame him for setting the precedent for commercial categories and fast-food franchises).

So, then I thought I'd find my first waymark  - WM7WV A McDonalds in Alton Bay, NH approved by bootron!  It even has a visit.  Just trying to follow our leader. Smile  That was on 2/21/2006, a few months after I got my first GPSr and started this new thing called geocaching.  Both have been a lot of fun and I've learned tons!

    Re: Statistics

Thanks BeanTeam! Interesting how did you come across this one? Out of the way, but certainly not inaccessible. Its at a point now where you almost hope it does not get any visits so it can maintain its record. There is a cache nearby that has had visits as recent as Sept this year. I guess none of the geocachers were waymarkers as well.

And he approved his own waymark! *gasp*faint*!

My first was a Scenic Look-out which is no longer applicable (WMJJA), which is why I set it invisible. It's now a well-manicured park with nice ammenities and parking spots. A walking path leads past that spot now, when before you would just drive your car up to it. debbado did a modern waymark of the area.

Before groups you had to approve your own if you did a waymark in a category you owned.

Some even show that the owner accepted it, when in fact they didn't. many of my early ones show that I accepted my own which I have never done.

Yes you will have problems with ones where the site somehow let you get a country state/province mismatch such as Ontario, Cambodia (you are not alone with that plight)

    Re: Statistics

Great list Bruce!  I had even placed a few waymarks for I believe Alabama and listed them by mistake to Georgia then catch and correct it. I need to check and make sure all are correct, you can place a waymark in any country or state regardless of the coordinates given. Maybe a future version would make it so you can't do that. If the cords don't match the geographic region, then it will not let you submit it. Not sure how that would work exactly, but I would think it possible.

Thanks everyone, very interesting information here on the early days of waymarking!

There are several listed in Alabama which are not located there.  These are older waymarks from when the list defaulted to Alabama once the United States was selected.  People should take a look at their map on their profile and check the color of Alabama and if they haven't been to Alabama it should not be any shade of blue. Great stats Bruce. How can we list all waymarks in an area (say everything in a state) ?

These stats show that if your country/state doesn't have enough waymarks (I'd say 100), you need to get busy!

Currently (it may change when new search is released),  to get all waymarks for a state/country click on link below the box where you can enter an address for searching  "additional search options"  A box will appear select the tab for region search.  You will then be able to select country - state desired.   (I know it well I did it for all the states and countries listed one at a time to compile the list)

There are 217 waymarks in South Korea.  I don't know what the search doesn't work.  I put in Seoul as a center for a search, and several major cites between there and the south, and I always got no more than 217 within 100 miles.  And, no, they are not all mine.  But, there will be lots more, though I'm currently working on some of my backlog from the U.S.

Great work on the stats, though!

I would like to see some of these statistical features built into the system so it doesn't have to be done this way, and they could be real-time.  I'd love to be able to do some of this by category, too!

The search that does not work is Region search for South Korea (and a few other countries).   If you do a region search you can click on the category + and it will display the number of waymarks in each category for that region.

    Re: Statistics

One other stat I think would be interesting to see is a list of users in order by their number of waymarks contributed.  I know that the top 2 would be saopaulo1 and BruceS, but beyond that I'd have no clue who has been the most prolific (maybe silverquill?).  Not that waymarking is all about the number you contribute, and some of them would be like comparing apples to oranges.  I just think some sort of ranking would be kind of neat so I could see where I fit into the grand scheme of things.

Each waymark's web address has the wayamark code in it.

    http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMZF

I changed the code of whatever waymark I was looking at to WM1, WM2, etc until I got to WM8.

I knew that some of the first ones had been visited but wanted to look at them again anyhow.

    Thanks for the list BruceS.

    Fun stats.

I third Wampa-One's comment, as I've also wondered the same thing myself. I wonder how GrandHighPoopbah did it for the geocaching side http://www.cacherstats.com/, and if it would easily convert to waymarking stats?  Maybe the WM's owned KML can be uploaded and extracted somehow like on Itsnotaboutthenumbers?

    Re: Statistics

I've been watching this for a while for waymarkers that I see that have over 500 waymarks (or there abouts) ...I do it by grunt effort using homepages and autofill when I type in the name tracking them in an excel sheet.....these waymarkers represent 44 % of the total waymarks submitted.

This is an interesting list...but my respect goes out to waymarkers with interesting an informative waymarks...not the commercial types...except for Tim Horton's of course (spoken like a true Canadian ).
