    Gauging opinions - Bell Towers

    Hi

I do not know how "Redundant"  this would be.

I know there is a group for Static Bells ( ground based) USUALLY a ceremonial piece.

And for Carillons, of which I am an officer.

I was wondering though, if just a group for you everyday Bell tower would make a possible group?

Alot of churches have a bell tower standing next to, or in close proximity to the sanctuary. Not saying churches are the only place, some town or city halls may have a bell tower. Maybe another building in your location? A Private home? Maybe a Fire Station?

Most are taller towers, and probabally would not fall into the Static (Ground Based) group.

Again, most would not be considered Carillon, needing (usually) 23 bells or more and Cartillon are usually marked as such.

I was thinking of just the Bell tower standing next to your local church, probabally there for decoration, but may be actually a working tower. And the City Hall may have bell tower atop the building, maybe used in days gone by.

Thank you for reading and opinions.

I would love a place to waymark the bell towers. Maybe the bells group could include bells you can't touch?

I like the idea.  We saw one this weekend nestled on top a great looking town hall.  It would be a perfect fit for this category.

It might be a good idea to exclude Churches or it could become yet another church category.

I wouldn't recommend excluding churches. That seems pretty random.

The only thing I'd underscore is that it has to be an actual belltower that's functional (or was functional at one time) with an actual bell in there, not an architectural feature made to look like a belltower.

I agree with both points above.

Let's be sure that the bell tower has real bells!  My church has a tower, with music that comes out that sounds exactly like real bells, but it's a computer.  This tower is built in such a way that you can't see in the tower to verify its bells.  Maybe another source of verification should be used if a visual isn't possible.

I don't think the verification is the way to go. It would eliminate a lot of submissions where towers are undocumented. Also I  know of a few  towers that once had bells but now they are dormant and computerized bells are played...it is still a bell tower.

Well, I've been talking about making another bell category for years, but have just been too lazy to get around to it.  The current bell category restricts people to bells that you can take your picture with.  This cuts out lots of other really cool bells out there.

Again, the question is asked, should we have another restrictive category (bell towers), or just one other all-inclusive category for bells that you cannot take your picture with?  If that makes sense.

I would love to see a "Bell Towers" or "Functional Bells" category created. The jerk (me) running the existing category is pretty closed minded about opening it up to other ideas.

Often I see cool bell displays that simply don't fit into my Bells category. I've been hoping someone would take it up.

Cool BQ - The jerk that leads the other bells category. (I'm just kidding around... )

Re: Gauging opinions - Bell Towers

    Hi again.

I started "The Bells Toll" group, located

    http://www.waymarking.com/groups/details.aspx?f=1&guid=103eb3bb-228d-46d4-851f-45d67a6017dc

Enrollment is set to open, if anyone cares to join.

The group quick description is -

"To Locate and Waymark any bell towers or bells that are mounted on or atop any structure. Waymarks cannot fit into any other bell groups (Static Displayed Bells or Carillons)"

Any help along the way, either positive or negative, will be appreciated.

    Thanks again!

Re: Gauging opinions - Bell Towers

Do you intend to include church steeples with bells?  Having lived in New England for a long time, I've seen a lot of great examples of these.  There are still a lot of Paul Revere bells hanging around.   I've climbed up in some of these, and then I realized why Paul Revere put his lanterns up there - spectacular views.  Churches, government buildings, schools from the little one-roomers to grand universities, fire stations, are all great places to find bells.

What about bells that may be mounted on top of a building WITHOUT a tower?  Maybe the category could be Bell Towers and Mounted Bells.

Good idea, with a lot of interest!
