Roadkill -- category passed and open for business!!

Thanks to everyone who voted this category in!  Start posting those skunks, raccoons, and armadillos.  I can't wait to see what gets run over in other countries!

Naturally, there were a few negative comments.  I'll condense and reply to them now:

    "Not permanent enough"
It's a documented fact that due to the economy, counties are cutting back on roadkill disposal.  These have never been more permanent.

    "Too dangerous"
The thing is dead.  What's it going to do, bleed on you?

"People might run over animals just to make a waymark"
There's no guideline that says the subject of a waymark can't be created by the poster.

    "No"
    Yes!

"That does it, I'm done with Waymarking!!"
    Oh, no!  Mark your calendars!

You can start posting here!  Have fun!

One thing the category didn't make clear is weather the roadkill can be animals that were shot near the road or if they must be casualties as the result of contact with a vehicle of some sort. If the category includes animals that have been shot I'm all for it but if not I may need to use my ignore button.

I like the drop down for animal type. Around here Opossums are common enough that they should be on the drop down, and not just "other".

Count me among the many supporters of this new category. One question, though: I read the description, and didn't see anything about the percentage of the animal that needs to be at the "kill" site. There's about 40% of a skunk on a street near my house. Is that enough?

You better hurry and get that one, I understand that 40% of a skunk is a just about right as a meal for two.  If you don't hurry someone will have in their freezer before you get it submitted. (Obviously someone has already removed a meal for 3)

My great-grandmother always said that squirrels were best and possums were second, skunks tasted like they smelled.  Stick out tongue

Duly noted.  I also plan to add "Unidentifiable".

If you do eat someone's waymark in this category, please supply the cooking method used in your visit log.

For those of that are running into problems identifying your potential waymark may I suggest Flattened Fauna: A Field Guide to Common Animals of Roads, Streets, And Highways by Roger M. Knutson.

And for those who maybe short of a good preparation technique I would suggest The Original Road Kill Cookbook by Buck Peterson

Re: Roadkill -- category passed and open for business!!

This topic reminded me of a book I read about Peter Jenkins walk across America when he stopped in someplace in  "back country" where he found the cabin owner cooking the most delicious smelling stew.  When asked what he was boiling the answer was "Road kill"
-- that he feeds to his dogs. Stick out tongue

I have one to submit but I need some help with the "method of preservation" variable... what should I pick?

Isn't nice of those two "pretty" birds trying to wake up Rocky the Raccoon before he gets hit by a car.  He should know better than trying to take a nap in the road.

At this point, I should probably make sure any future readers catch that this was posted on
    April Fools Day.

It might not be as obvious now as it was then.

Thanks for running with it, everyone.  I loved Bruce's caption for the vulture pic. Big Smile
