    NCP-Funny Typo's

I think it'd be cool to have a catagory that deals with funny typos. Most of you already read my Died before he was born thread. That is where I got the idea for this. The typo would be required to be in public and in some way, shape or form, funny. I know I already hear the "SUBJECTIVE" speech. I think if 2 out of 3 people think a typo is funny then the next 2 out of 3 people should see the humor in it as well. We're not talking a plain old typo because apparently there's a lot of those. I'm hoping there's some wide spread interest in this but I'm having my doubts. Well let the tomato throwing begin. Swizzle

I think this would be included in "Unintentionally Funny Signs."

    Re: NCP-Funny Typo's

You could shift the focus from being funny to changing the meaning.

For example, in your example in the other thread, the birth date was scribed as later than the death date. Unlike common typos like "an"/"a" or "it"/"if", this typographical error changes the meaning of what is being communicated. This reminds me the "church bulletin" email memes that continuously go around. Some people find those funny but they're an example of how a typo can change the meaning of the statement.

    Like:

The rosebud on the alter this morning is to announce the birth of David Alan Belzer, the sin of Rev. and Mrs. Julius Belzer.

This focus removes the subjective necessity of them being "funny" but also gives a category for the things that I believe you're trying to find a category for.

    Just an idea.

    Re: NCP-Funny Typo's

We do have several "funny" categories, like the aforementioned Unintentionally Funny Signs category.  Let me tell you, the subjective nature of this makes it really difficult.  What made me laugh, didn't make the officers laugh.

Then there is  Humorous Combination Businesses with the same problem.  If the officers are generous, it works better, but it is still difficult.

And, let's not forget the Unusual Signs category.   Can't get more subjective than that. So , that's my "subjective speech."

But, it also points out that there is probably one of these categories that would fit the messed up dates in your example.  It's up to you to figure out which one, and then hope that the officers agree with you.

Well in this case here we have a sort of square peg/round hole thing going on. Since we have 929 catagories as it is and still growing, would it be wise to create another catagory? It might benefit other people farther down the line, but the only benefit I see now is my one example. As it is right now I still need to locate the headstone. I personally don't feel that a headstone fits in with funny or unusual signs. Unless that catagory can expand to except other examples of public displays other the signs. Swizzle

The unintentional funny signs does accept some headstones.  A typo in general will not "qualify"    Keep in mind not everything really needs to be a waymark.    "Typos" are quite common on headstones, I have seen people who have died in the future, names spelled wrong, and months spelled wrong.

    Re: NCP-Funny Typo's

Here are my thoughts - take 'em or leave 'em:

    • Category management is hard work, but it gets even harder when the category is subjective in nature. Ok - that's my contribution to the subjective argument.
    • It might be helpful if you could find a few more real examples of what you would consider to be acceptable waymarks for this category, and include them in this discussion. Now that I think about it,  you haven't even located this particular 'died before he was born' headstone yet, have you? Wink
    • I like the enthusiasm and passion for this particular idea that you've displayed in the forums recently. If this particular idea doesn't pan out for you, I'm sure another category idea will.
    • There is a typo in your topic title -you shouldn't have included the apostrophe in the word "typos". I don't know if that would be considered funny or not, but it might be ironic. Or perhaps you are just trying to make sure I'm paying attention.Smile

    Re: NCP-Funny Typo's

Uhhh..yeah..I was...uh..just checkin' uh.. checking to see if you were paying attention. That's it. Ok enough craziness.

Once I locate the stone I'll see what I can do to put it in the funny signs catagory. If it fits, great, problem solved if not then maybe this could become a catagory. If the headstone does indeed fit into the funny signs catagory then I don't see any reason to add more catagories that aren't necessary. I'm sure I'll come up with another clay pigeon for you guys to shoot down sooner or later. Swizzle

    Re: NCP-Funny Typo's

It may or may not fly with the Unintentionally Funny Signs category. Something to do with context, which I'm not quite clear on. I've found a few that made me bust a gut, but seemed to fall flat on it's face. Unusual Signs is more likely to accept it. Spelled it right this time SQ! Now go find it.
