Can be seen from space?

I was at the Auriesville shrine near my home a few days ago and took a bunch of pics. I noticed that one of the things that they have here is a huge cross made out of pine trees. They are all still growing so the cross is still getting bigger as well. Is this waymarkable? There is also a giant rosary on the ground made out of painted rocks a few feet away from the trees and this can also be seen on the satellite imagery as well. I've been using terraserver for some time now. Is there anything better then this that's free? Swizzle

You could try Satellite Imagery Oddities.

You might also want to take a look at C
hristian Crosses.

Re: Can be seen from space?

The Christain Crosses need to be free standing and everything I've seen on the oddities is stadiums, a landlocked submarine, big buildings and such. The thing about it is the fact that I can't get a pic of the whole cross from the ground. I'd need to be 30 feet in the air. I'll be going back there soon and getting pic all around it. I find a lot of square pegs in a state full of round holes, don't I. Swizzle

I think you can do Satellite Imagery Oddities on this. Here is a link for a reference site http://www.geody.com/geospot.php?world=terra&ufi=100942706&alc=rsv

By chance did you take a photo of the words at the base of the cross which I believe read Auriesville Shrine which could be submitted to
Readable From Above

Re: Can be seen from space?

I was thinking about the readable from above category to but the words are pretty blurry. That's why I asked about different satellite imagery. There's gotta be some type of free imagery better then terraserver by now. It does say Auriesville Shire. If you can read that on the satellite imagery then at the top of the cross, (the cross being upside down), you'll see what looks like a snake. Look at where the snakes tail is pointing and you can see the rosary. If you keep going left on the map across that side road they have a gift shop and I believe its another Auriesville Shrine sign on that hill side too.

The cross does have a little sign on the ground that tells about it as does the rosary as well. After seing how small the rosary is on the ground it made me wonder what I could do in my own backyard that would show up on satellite imagery. I was thinking about using 2 different types of grass seed to make a giant checker board. The rocks that make up the rosary are only about the size of a volley ball so I could make checkers out of 5 gallon bucket lids and you'd be able to see it just fine. Swizzle

Don't you have to buy google earth and what's KML? I'll look it up here in a bit. Swizzle

Re: Can be seen from space?

Google Earth is free. Google Earth Pro isn't. From the Waymarking homepage, you'll find the KML file over on the right-hand side. It'll show all the waymarks in Google Earth. KML stands for Keyhole Mark up Language. Keyhole is the company that started the program and Google bought them out. I use Google Earth all the time.

Re: Can be seen from space?

I stumbled across this thread and after reading for a bit, went off to find the aerials of the shrine. As founder of the "readable from above" category, and after viewing the site with 3 different lookups (lookdowns?) those being Google maps, Bing! and Terraserver, none of the images would give enough resolution to make the words actually 'readable', so it would not qualify for the category unless Google Earth - or something else - can show a better aerial of the coordinates.
In any case - I welcome other submissions to the RFA category, and I know they are hard to find - I don't even have one WM in my own category, but the rarity is one of the reasons it is distinctive. Jim

Re: Can be seen from space?

Thanx for the feedback. If I find any better Satellite Imagery that shows it more clearly then I'll be sure to post it then with a link to the new or updated imagery. Something better has got to come along soon. Swizzle

Re: Can be seen from space?

I checked Google Earth and it still doesn't make it readable.

It is a very interesting item.

As for free satellite/aerial photos, see if your local county assessor's or GIS department has on-line mapping available.

I just looked to see if swizzle's Montgomery County, NY has aerials on-line. They say they do, but I cannot find the layer.

Re: Can be seen from space?

I can get to the area alright but no pics. I might be able to find a something online where someone took a pic from an airplane but that doesn't help with the "Can Be Seen From Space" category. Thanx for trying. Swizzle
