    Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

    Waymarking.com Release Notes for 10/29/2009

Many of you have read the feature enhancements in the other thread. I will reproduce that description below. But first, the fixes:

    • Ajax added for country/state on waymark entry. This prevents the page from refreshing when selecting the dropdown
    • Waymark variables on the details pages are sorted in order of those answered. Unanswered variables are displayed last
    • Entering coordinates in the location search field on the main page will not automatically initiate a search, allowing you to also enter a keyword
    • Fixed the exclamation point enclosed in triangle icon on group page showing reviews waiting
    • Now displaying a link to the waymark you just reviewed on confirmation page
    • "Leave Comment" replaces "Write Note" and is linked from the waymark details page as opposed to the "Visit Waymark (Post log)" page
    • Added advanced search page at /search.aspx and linked from the home page
    • When two reviewers are simultaneously viewing the same new waymark only the first review (accept/decline) will be saved. You may still re-review the waymark after re-visiting the review page if you wish
    • Waymark map will no longer lose its location when a visit log is posted
    • Forgetting to add state or country to a new waymark will no longer break navigation
    • Visit logs may now be posted up to 1 day in the "future" to account for different time zones
    • Waymarks are no longer made invisible; rather you may archive and unarchive published waymarks posted by you. Unpublished waymarks can be deleted.
    • Fixed issue where a waymark would not appear in a group's past activity tab because a group member had left the group

    opinionate:
Uncategorized Waymarks (formerly known as "Orphan Waymarks" or just "Marks")

These are waymarks submitted without a category. From the home page is a new link to submit a waymark. Once on the creation page for waymarks you'll find a new dropdown category control that can be used to select the category you want or it can be left blank. When a waymark is submitted without a category it will be placed in a new list called "New Uncategorized Waymarks". These waymarks will not be visible in a regular waymark search. Anyone can view this list, and Premium Members will be able to help categorize the waymarks in it.

Adding a category to someone else's uncategorized waymark is identical to creating your own new waymark, with the exception that the coordinates, description and other fields will be populated with the original user's data. All of these fields can be modified by you before submission. In addition, it will be the categorizer's responsibility to fill in the variables, since the original submitter will not have known in which category it may end up (and therefore what variables are required).

Once submitted and approved, the original uncategorized waymark is removed from the "New..." list. The resulting categorized waymark recognizes the user who originally contributed the proto-waymark with a credit on the page.

Although the original uncategorized waymark is removed from the "New..." list it can still be accessed and spawn other waymarks if you know the URL. In this way multiple waymarks can be created from a single uncategorized waymark.

    Edit Waymark

The original plan was to make all variables optional while allowing non-owner users to fill in the empty fields. We are no longer going to remove required variables. Instead, we have expanded the concept of editing variables to include the entire waymark.

Any user may edit a waymark, but some will require Group review first. The pending reviews will appear in the regular waymark review queue and each field that was edited can be approved or denied on an individual basis. The person doing the editing must supply a reason for each field they modify.

    • Basic user: Edit waymark and variables require Group review for all changes
    • Premium user: Edit waymark and previously answered variables require Group review, unanswered variables via a visit log can be edited without review*
    • Owner: No review necessary for any edits
    • Category Officer: No review necessary for any edits assuming he has the necessary permissions

*Any unanswered waymark variables will be presented to Premium Members when a visit log is posted. These will necessarily be optional variables or the waymark would never have been published.

Once we have vetted the live release and are comfortable with the performance, we will begin work on the next task: Group functionality (aka deadbeat leaders).

Please let us know if you find any broken functionality and we will work quickly to restore it. I look forward to reading your impressions of these new features once you have a chance to experience them. If you have waymarking buddies (who manage categories) that you can work with to test out the edit functionality I would encourage you to do so.

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

I was looking at the edits of other people's waymarks. Where is the boxes to explain your editing? Do you use the private box? How does the officers know who's waymarking it, and is a reason required?

a link variable displayed on the waymark page shows the whole URL of the link (in blue)

could we change that back to just say 'link'?

A glitch: I'm getting a runtime error when I click the Log It button. From the list of waymarks.

Also I'm not getting any email for visits or approvals.

i did not recieve 4 conformation notes....

and in posting an uncategorized waymark: the red text says 'You must continue selecting categories until you reach the deepest subcategory.'

is this exactly the opposite of an uncategorized mark? there is no category for it.

This is a bug. We'll have it fixed at another time.

ok, i see when you submit, it says you have not selected a category.

but, again, why is this an option for 'noncategories'?

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

No problems so far.  I was able to re-categorize two waymarks I had written in the wrong categories without having to do much (other than add an address line by line, hey Nate, fix that!).  I liked being able to do this.

Changing the category is a bit cumbersome requiring a bunch of clicks, opening up a new window to find out what subheading the category is under and then finishing it.  I think we need to investigate a less complicated way to do this.

For a first look, I am happy with the new changes.  I am however sad that I still can't filter when I'm in a specific category.  I know that Checkmark spoke with you about this.

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

how about a variable for uncategorized waymarks....

then it might be easier to see
    -which dont have a category
-which the poster didnt know where to put it
-and which just need more info/pics.....

I can confirm that I didn't get 2 conformation notes and 1 listed note.

I agree.  If we're going to have uncategorized waymarks, it would be nice to have an easy way to say that is what you are posting.  With the drop down, I am going to try to fit it somewhere.

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

Bruce discovered an issue with waymark edits that we're looking at. Apparently if a required variable is created for a category *after* it has already accepted some waymarks, those waymarks will not let you edit them without including the required information. We're discussing ways around this now.

Checking into this, thanks O and chapterhouseinc.

Edit: Actually, this one was easy. The newsletter is going out right now to everyone in the Groundspeak universe. Once the queue is clear those emails should show up.

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

this has always been an issue.....

i have an existing waymark i wanted to add info to....the category had since added variables and i had to fill them out before proceeding....

similar to a '0' value in an 'admission price' (or whatever variable) disppeared, and but be reentered each time any edits are made. if the # is anything but a '0', it remains in the box.

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

    re: uncategorized waymarks.

i posted one , looked at all nice and new.
    i moved one.
    i moved 3.

then when i went to newest uncategorized only the last 3 showed. whats with that?

ALSO, uncategorized marks do not appear in 'my waymarks'.....
so, the one i posted outright (keys aids memorial) should be tops in that search result.

the other 4, which i just removed the category from (and why i thought of needing an explaining variable) shoudl still be in my results, but have the category removed? right?

    -----
    edit add:

ok, you need not cancel an uncategorized (as poster) to add info, however it still appears as though you must 'resubmit'

i found the aids memorial (in my uncategorized marks), but really, 5 mins and its no longer new?

why does this even say newest? shouldnt it be ALL? then we can sort by ABC, WMXXXX, Date Posted, etc.....

is it just me, but the new spacing on the create a waymark page seems to be stretched very long and the text is huge...

It will let you update the waymark but it requires a reason why you are changing that variable when you have not made any change to the variable.  (Sorry if I was not clear on in communication)

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

i had a similar thing where to 'resubmit' you must change something on the page (i added a comma).

    RE; Review que.
nice to see that resubmitions get a note.
however, must all new waymarks say [new waymark]? and all resubs say [edited waymark]?

cant all new ones just be there, and all resubmitions get some sort of 'small' star infront?

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

    re: editing waymarks

    -i picked a waymark at random (WM7B14).
the name slelled out California--the one below it was just 'CA'. i filled out the box and the next screen says

"You have successfully sent a request to the Candy Stores category managers to edit the Sweet Factory- Fashion Valley Mall- San Diego, CA waymark."

1)the name used in this statement is what i changed it TO. if #2, then shouldn't it say what i changed it FROM?

2)if i am only requesting an edit, why, up until this message' does the language read like i am changing it?

then 3) shouldnt the link on the waymark be 'Propose Waymark Edit' instead of 'edit waymark'?

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

    re: logging a visit/note to a waymark.

now that the actions of visit and note have been split there is some disconnect.

    Situation:
i am looking at the 'unanswered variables' aspect of a PM log.
-i go to 'my waymarks', scroll down until i see a NRHP (WM7H8Z), which i know has an hours variable i checked 'no answer'.

-as usual, i just right click to open the 'visit waymark' icon, but since i have already visited it. i cannot visit it again. RESULT: Server Error in '/' Application.

    -----
what now? should it just take me to the leave a note page?

    --
    edit add:
ok. opened waymark in new window.

-i see how the variables have rearranged, and the unanswered are at the bottom. (i dont know that i care for this)

-i clicked to write a note, but was not presented with the unanswerd variables as stated in the OP.

I thought titles were locked from editing by other waymarkers. I hope it doesn't turn into some edit wars.

    Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

what if the variable is filled out on the waymark, but i want to change them? (winter over summer hours)

this would have to go through the submit a change function? and this is sent to the 'owner' and every officer (with that permission) in the group?

opinion: boy, some days my emails explodes as it is.
just wait till i start getting all these notes. i can see me finally leaving some lesser 'interest' categories in a hurry.....
