Looking for officers -- Coffee Roasters

Have set up a new group called Grab a cup of fresh joe, Joe! -- http://www.waymarking.com/groups/details.aspx?f=1&guid=13dd71ba-5b33-4d5c-91c4-3b8e492b675c -- and am looking for people interested in creating a new category.

This would for waymarking those independent coffee shops that roast their coffee beans on the premises. Many coffee drinkers know that the most flavourful coffee is that which is roasted and brewed within a few hours. As the purpose of the group says:

A group dedicated to the coffee roasters and sell the freshly roasted at the same location. Many coffee drinkers try to get the freshest roast possible, but we don't know always know that it is. To the freshest roast possible.

If you are interested in this please join up at the URL above.

    Cheers,
    DL

There is already an independent coffee shop category that accepts these.

The independent coffee shop category has no required variable regarding on-site roasting. It is purely voluntary on behalf of the waymarker to mention this. As many coffee drinkers will comment, freshly roasted coffee is a category unto itself.

This is like the distinction between neon signs and artistic neon signs. While the former is a subset of the latter, the latter is an art-form when compared to the former.

The artistic neon category came first and the neon signs was expansion of it at a later time.  Thus I don't view that as a precedence in anyway.

If your category was for independent coffee roasters whether they sold brewed coffee or not would be a better way to go because not all the locations could be submitted in the independent coffee shop category.

Did not see the comparison I made with the two neon categories as a precedence, rather as an analogy. Regardless of the history in terms of Waymarking of the two neon sign categories, one is a subset of a larger topic. This would be similar.

The idea is to list coffee roasters that sell beans on the premises that they are roasted at. The majority that I have run into sell beverages and beans.

What would be ideal is a category that is just about places where you can buy freshly roasted coffee beans on the same premises as they are roasted at. And, yes, many would also fit into independent coffee shops. However, I'm looking at something that be quickly filtered out by having it's own category.

To get back to my original question: Is there anyone interested in becoming an officer of this group to move the category forward to peer review?

Re: Looking for officers -- Coffee Roasters

I'm beginning to change my opinion about categories inside other categories. It seems to be getting out of hand.

What you are proposing sound more like a variable that might be added to an existing category. Or more accurately, if sounds much like the example that shows what doesn't work... "Blue Lighthouses" would not be accepted since "Lighthouses" already does. This idea seems too specialized.

Re: Looking for officers -- Coffee Roasters

While I will be voting "nay" for this proprosal exactly because it could be filtered on a single variable from an existing category, the "blue lighthouse" argument does not stop the Waymarking community from approving similar situations because of a slick write-up.  Railroad Museums category should have not been created because of its redundacy with historical museums which already had a large number approved for railroad "Theme" variable.

As a non-coffee drinker who works with several coffee connoisseurs who think the same way as Dunbar Loop, the following is a joke:

Fresh Coffee Roasters?!  What's next for waymarking?  Opium Dens and Crack Houses?  Since there is a new thread on unsafe neighborhoods that just might happen.

Re: Looking for officers -- Coffee Roasters

I think there would be a prevalence problem with this category idea.  How many coffee shops roast their own coffee?  Many grind their own, but I don't know that I've been in one that buys green coffee beans and does the roasting on premises.  I suppose some coffee roasters serve coffee.  So, if there are enough to make a category, then Coffee Roasters could be viable, with "serves coffee" or "attached coffee shop" as a variable.

    Many places do. Yes

They import the green beans and mix and roast to their own specs.  (is everyone a tea drinker in Korea?)
     - Do look at the map, posted above, of Europe and the Scandinavian countries. Not shown are the Arab countries,  heavy consumers of the brew..
     - and the next time you go to Hawai`i you'll be able to post some yourself  too. Coffee

I can remember that I have stumbled on three in the past 10 years. I'd guess they are about as common at Teahouses/Tea Rooms(more common in some areas than others)

Re: Looking for officers -- Coffee Roasters

Haha, also note that I remember the three, much more than I can remember all the independent Coffee brewers that I have been to. Some may disagree in the assignments of official categories here, but a coffee roaster is indeed quite different from a coffee brewer. When you find yourself in a shop that roasts their own beans, you will know that you are in a different place than just another coffee house.
