New Group - MS Blue Brothers

This proposed group is looking for officers.

The focus of the group will be Blues related Waymarks in Mississippi ("Birthplace of America's Music").

I think by restricting your category to Blues in Mississippi you will have problems because the category would not be viewed as global.

Re: New Group - MS Blue Brothers

hey, i just saw the blues brothers show at universal.....i got a pic of the car to upload at some point....

but yes, i agree. remove the MS part and sounds like a good idea.

    questions:
    what qualifies?
    a 'house of blues'?

a statue in a park of a blues musician?

a blues [only] record label office?

a historic marker that specifically discusses a musucian or music genre?

Right now I am just trying to establish the GROUP.

I think each of the items you listed would make great CATEGORIES.

Good point about the narrow group focus.....

    Noted.

Having waymarked a few times in Mississippi, I agree there are several Blues related sites available within your state including a special series historical markers.  I have submitted many to other categories from historical markers, a railroad depot now blues museum, sites on National Register etc.  I think a Blues type category would be good.  I would open it all qualifying blues locations wherever they are.  I think you need to define what type of sites you want, this can be fairly broad or can be more limited.  I would also define what "qualifies" as blues as there are several genre which are closely related and regional derivatives of the blues.

Re: New Group - MS Blue Brothers

This one is now in peer review.  But I don't see any of the suggestions made in this forum thread incorporated in the cat proposal - worldwide, what is blues?, etc.

My take is that this category is already covered by Mississippi Historical Markers, which already has the following markers (and more) posted:

    Columbus, Mississippi Blues

Black Prairie Blues - Macon, Mississippi

    Club Ebony - Indianola

    Robert Johnson Gravesite - Greenwood

This is a "blues" lighthouse duplicate of the main MS historical marker category, thus redundant.  Limited in scope (I would be more favorable if worldwide, and not linked to a single marker set).  It is interesting.

    My vote will be nay.

I agree with vhasler on this.  Instead of going with a more global and broad category this proposal is for a relatively small set of markers all in the state of Mississippi. (from the Mississippi Blues Commission website it will have 120 markers total).   As I have submitted two already to the Mississippi Historical marker category I know they are accepted there and if they were not I would have submitted them to the Signs of History category.

We have blue related locations here in Ontario. I would hope that I would be able to include them.

TeamFarkle7 likely knows one exact location I am referring to...

"Ain't nobody leave this place without singing the blues"

    Cool BQ

    "I got the BLUES...
    Babysitting these three!"
"Adventures in Babysitting" filmed at the Silver Dollar Room in Toronto. Very cool, but the next time we're up there I got to see inside the El Mocambo. The list of performers that have been there is phenomenal. Although I'm sure the Silver Dollar has had its share of talent walk through the door...

Re: New Group - MS Blue Brothers

My original post was regarding the GROUP and I eagerly incorporated the suggestions from this forum to be more inclusive with the mission statement for the GROUP.

The MS Blues Trail was just one category I hoped to create for the group. For one, I'm from MS and thought these are pretty interesting. Second, I thought that the finite number would actually be a plus for those that like the game aspect of Waymarking ("Hey, I found all of the ....").

I completely understand how the community sees these as just MS markers. However, I see them as more special than that. Other parts of the world have mountains; we don't, I would enjoy visiting mountain related waymarks if I visited somewhere that had them. MS is the birthplace of the Blues; other places aren't. I thought this would be a category that people from other places would enjoy should they visit MS.

The open enrollment is still out there for the group and will remain so. As folks from other localities showed an interest in Blues waymarks, I had planned create more categories for the group to manage. Perhaps some of them would have been regional too (Chicago comes to mind).

I am a newbie-cacher-convert, so I apologize for trying to dive in and participate too soon and apparently getting it all wrong.

The groups have a one-to-one correspondence with the categories.

If the group has a category, you will need to form a new group if you want a new category.

It's cool.  I was one who voted it down but would love to see a blues category.  Detroit is steeped in the blues.

It doesn't seem that you did it all wrong. I thought it was very interesting. And I share your opinion that the over 100 plaques does make the idea of "I visited them all" appealing.

Sometimes I think people put too much weight on the "global" aspect even though it is only 1 of the 4 criteria. But at the same time, global often feels like the most important. We have loads of categories that fail the global requirement... "U.S. National Register of Historic Places", the largest category we have fails that. In fact 5 out of the 10 largest categories fail the global aspect.

I encourage you to continue to work on the category, not abandon it.

    Cool BQ

Thanks for the encouragement BQ. I took another shot at a Blues Category, this time with a broader appeal. It's out for review now.

    Greatly improved in my estimation.

    Thanks for the continued effort.

I have a few submissions in mind if I can just find them.
