Best pixels width for resizing photos

    Hi everyone:

Well, I received my new camera Monday evening and went out photographing yesterday. I'm very happy with the camera! So I began up edit and upload photos to Waymark categories.

There used to be a little note asking one to resize their photos to 600 pixels (or less) wide. That is the number I have used for years. Is that still the 'best' width or has it been increased?

Not a big issue, but I could not find the desired photo upload width info on the site (probably just missed it somewhere).

    Thanks and take care,

I think the width has been released to allow anything your are wanting to upload. For some users larger photos has created time outs but I think this issue may also be resolved. I know I have seen some amazingly big photos and often I love to look at the detail they provide.

Here is an example of a recent one that is huge but worth the upload.

Sweet! I just photographed a bunch of nice art pieces and they kinda lose impact at 600 pixels wide. I'll play around and see what seems to be the best compromise between file size and upload time and display size.

Everything I've been shooting has been 1660 by 1200 pixels. I don't plan to print them or submit to National Geographic (grin!), just mainly upload to Waymarking.

    Take care,

I have found that 1024 x 768 works well for me.  They usually load well and give decent presentation quality.

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I'm glad that we can now upload larger photos, but I did not want to upload a photo that was too big for others to enjoy.

As always, Bruce, your a wealth of assistance. Thank you.

    Take care,

Thought it might be worth passing this link to anyone looking for easy photo resizing: http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize

Its a free program that I use, as it allows me to dump a bunch of waymarking photos and resize them really quicky.

Some of the photo editing software is so tedious to just do a simple resize for uploading..

Thanks to everyone for their input. I just love that we can joke with each other and help Waymarking develop as a great pastime and educational hobby.

    All my best,

A me too on this one....this size typically keeps me from timing out at band width throttled hotels when I'm trying to upload all of those waymarks in my queue.  Just can't seem to get around to all of them when I'm at home.

That's about the size I use, as well. It didn't know that the uploading issue may be fixed, I'm going to have to play around with that and see what I think.

Re: Best pixels width for resizing photos

    I recently uploaded a panorama photo that came to 4716px × 908px.

It turned out fine with no problems with the upload. Be careful if you enlarge it using slow computers. It is really big but gives some amazing detail of the subject I was waymarking.
