    Bifana's House in Peer Review

I'm a little confused about this one. Are they a specific chain, or is it any restaurant dedicated to the sandwich? Would any restaurant that sells the bifana sandwich be allowed?

I agree, this one is confusing.   I think it needs some work before it is ready.

Trying to find info in Google, the top two result were for Waymarking and the Bifana.com site is under construction (actually, a placeholder)

I too am hoping it can be expanded to be more clear. I do like a pulled pork sandwich ... yum

If it isn't for a specific restaurant, but for a style of sandwich, then they should be looking at the Independent BBQ Joints.

The way it was written, made it sound like a specific restaurant chain.  I wonder why we cannot find a web reference for it.  Our collective Google-Fu should not be that weak - unless we need to switch our language preference to Portugese.

I have found a few Portuguese restaurants which serve Bifana.  Not too many Portuguese restaurants in the US or Canada and most are in a few locations where the Portuguese immigrant population is highest.

Do you think the category is for the sandwich, Bruce?

From the category description I could not tell.  Even if it is for the sandwich it seems to be a pretty limited category.

I guess if they put the effort into the Bifana that went into Bubble Tea, it would be easier to vote for it.

My memory is that Bubble Tea didn't go the first time, and then there was a thorough forum discussion and a greatly improved write up.

I'm always game to try new things, and if the Bifana was written up to a point where I wanted to try one, it would get my vote.

The Bubble Tea place here will put little tiny gummy bear type things instead of tapioca.

They are very small, and the straw is very large, maybe a 1/2 inch in diameter.

Re: Bifana's House in Peer Review

    Hi everyone,

I've been away for so much time from waymarking... Have to find time to get back. Let me clear out some questions regarding the Bifana.

The "Bifana" is a pork chop sandwich, served in our traditional bread, fried on vegetable oil or olive oil with lots of garlic. It tastes real good. Some add mustard or spicy sauce.

It's not a BBQ and it's not easy to find in every restaurant. There are "joints" that have them as their specialty, that's what this category is all about. Those "joints" are not BBQ joints. The vast majority doesn't have room for grilling meat. Just the regular oven.

This is not about a chain - I don't recall a chain selling Bifanas bigger than 2 or 3 businesses.

Hope this cleared out some doubts about it.

    Take care,

    Hugo

Thank you for that! It does help a lot. Should it happen that the category doesn't pass on the first try then maybe you can help them update it so that is clear.

Re: Bifana's House in Peer Review

We have a local place here (not Portugese) that serves a porkchop sandwich. It is breaded, fried in oil, served on a bun with fixings (slaw is a local favorite). Would it be acceptable?

I wonder how prevalent the sandwichs are outside Portugal. Can you get them in neighboring Spain? The sandwiches seem like a regional thing like Philly Cheesesteaks or Poutine (you can find them in the country, but good luck finding one anywhere else)

Re: Bifana's House in Peer Review

It's a Portuguese specialty. You can find in the several Portuguese houses/restaurants worldwide. Last one I saw serving the Bifana was in London, UK.

This is not regional or country exclusive, although I have a hard time understanding this issue. What about exclusive waymarks for your States (Historical Sites, etc)?

Re: Bifana's House in Peer Review

Separate categories for historical markers and benchmarks are unique in my mind.  Each country (or where appropriate, each state/province/territory) should be allowed its own historical marker category since they are unique to that area - plus the sheer volume is a nightmare.

Once you start talking about a commercial enterprise or product, it really should be as global as possible.  Take the Hamburger Regional Chain category for example.  I would have voted NAY if a Culver's or 5 Guys category were proposed even though I have some in my area.  Once it becomes generic enough where everyone can play, then I'm happy.

It sounds like these Bifana's are centered around Portugal but do have a wider appeal.  But you are going to have to convince people that you are not asking for (to use an American example) places that serve a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich with Cheez Whiz (which is primarily only Philadelphia).

For a more global example, we have a wineries category - not a Champaign House category.

So I would regroup and ask for a Speciality Sandwich category where you can have your Bifiana's and Philly can have their cheesesteaks, and I can have my Po' boys.

The way the category was written it sounded like the lace had to only serve the sandwiches.
