    Category Proposal - Australian Historical marker sites

    The following is a proposal for Australian Historical Markers.

    Any Feedback or suggestions to this would be greatly appreciated.
    Also any suggestion as to how to get html on the page would also be appreciated.
    I have try html code and checked the box, not sure where to go from there.
    As I would like the Extended Description to look like it is on this post.

    Description:
    This Category is for Waymarking all those historical marker sites around Australia, in all the States and Territories. Historical marker sites provide visitors with important, interesting information and provide us with a chance to stop to rest while traveling.

    Expanded Description: Like all countries Australia has valued historic sites which can be shared in Waymarking. We have numerous plaques and Monuments from the past. We want to share these with the rest of the Waymarking Community and the World.

    In order to be listed the object must be at the spot where history was made. This means it must be local to the specific area. In most instances it will be accompanied by a plaque issued by a governing body; this could be a municipality, a tourist office or an association like a Council. Normally these plaques are a standard design but can vary between regions. We will also accept cross-waymarking from other countries where Australia and/or Australians have had and influence in there history. This category seeks to discover and catalogue these interesting sites.

    We want to keep this category interesting and general but we do need some guidelines. Therefore, the following are examples of what we are not looking for: churches (interior or exterior items); churchyard and cemetery items; busts/statues; war memorials or building date stones. That is Not Listed in Any other Category on Waymarking.

    We are looking for the following: plaques depicting events or historic records, we are not looking for large buildings but if there is a plaque accompanying it, it will be acceptable, i.e. a National Trust Sites with an information board. Bridges with historical markers on them will be appropriate. Any oddities that have plaques or will be mentioned in local historic records, information MUST be provided with relevant web links.

    Instructions for Posting a Australian Historical marker sites Waymark:
    The name of the waymark should include the name on the plaque. Example the plaque at the Melbourne Cricket Ground could be The MCG Plaque.

    You need to take a photograph of the object/place and then a general view of the area with it in the picture. You must have personally obtained the location co-ordinates with you GPSr. Please respect private property and seek permission if it is in an indoor setting.
    Please include any text on the marker plaque in your description, stating it in quotes. Exceptions will be granted if the plaques are clearly legible in the photographs.
    It is necessary to include as much information about your submission as possible together with any credits or links.

    Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category: Please submit your visiting log with a picture of the object with yourself or your GPSr in it. Also include some interesting information about your visit.

    Category Settings:
    • Waymarks can be added to this category
    • New waymarks of this category are reviewed by the category group prior to being published
    • Category is visible in the directory
    Variables:
    • Age/Event Date

    Re: Category Proposal - Australian Historical marker sites

    looks like a good category to me.

    language could be cleaned up a little--phrasing and stuff.

    but, are you blocking out anything acceptable in any other category? what about the architecture categories? or live stages (opera house)?

    do you have a few examples to post in the category and use in the description?

    good start. and i hope MB posts something i can visit Wink.

    Re: Category Proposal - Australian Historical marker sites

    Take a look at other historical marker category descriptions, there are several, and pick the best.

     I would not include "That is Not Listed in Any other Category on Waymarking", do you want to eliminate an Australian marker just because it is also listed in the "First" category, such as the marker for Australia's first hospital or first settlers in Burnbury, and some may also fit in the UK historical marker category. Often the subject of a marker will be in other categories but the marker itself will not be.

    Also limit your category to historical markers only and modify this line from description "Any oddities that have plaques or will be mentioned in local historic records, information MUST be provided with relevant web links."  This line broadens your category to any historical site that is mentioned on a web site whether it has a plaque or marker or not and this would make your too broad.

    As far as variables if you have an age/event date make sure it is optional, and a plan text box, some markers will not have a date and others may have a date range given.   I would not have a rating on submission or at least make it optional, how do you really rate a historical plaque?

    Re: Category Proposal - Australian Historical marker sites

    This is a wonderful start. I agree that it needs to be rewritten a bit.

    For example the first line could read "This Category is for Waymarking the historical markers of Australia." rather than "This Category is for Waymarking all those historical marker sites around Australia, in all the States and Territories." and still give the same meaning.

    "We have numerous plaques and Monuments from the past. "
    Do you have plaques and monuments from the past or plaques and monuments that chronicle the rich history of Australia's past?

    Personally I would exclude the monuments from the category since most will fit well in other categories and they are a different thing entirely from historic plaques. A monument might have a historic plaque nearby and of course those would fit well.

    This;
    "In order to be listed the object must be at the spot where history was made. This means it must be local to the specific area. In most instances it will be accompanied by a plaque issued by a governing body; this could be a municipality, a tourist office or an association like a Council. Normally these plaques are a standard design but can vary between regions. We will also accept submissions from other countries where Australia and/or Australians have had and influence in there history. This category seeks to discover and catalogue these interesting sites.

    Could be this;
    Any plaque issued by a governing body,  (a municipality, tourist office or Council, etc.) will be considered for inclusion in this category.  Normally these plaques are a standard design but can vary between regions. Waymarks from other countries where Australia and/or Australians have had an impact and that influence is recorded on a plaque will be considered on a case by case basis. This category seeks to discover and catalogue these historic sites.

    If you limit it to historic plaques and plaques alone then the following statement is not needed. If a church has a plaque it is the plaque that is waymarked featuring the church and should not be excluded.

    "We want to keep this category interesting and general but we do need some guidelines. Therefore, the following are examples of what we are not looking for: churches (interior or exterior items); churchyard and cemetery items; busts/statues; war memorials or building date stones. That is Not Listed in Any other Category on Waymarking."

    This statement confuses me.

    "That is Not Listed in Any other Category on Waymarking."

    If you are going to limit items that are crosslistable you will only create headaches for yourself and those attempting to submit a waymark. Make the listing history plaques only and don't worry about what other categories accept and do not accept. If it winds up in another cat. it is because another aspect of the location is being featured.

    Your "
    Instructions for Posting a Australian Historical" need to be highlighted in some way. Here is one idea to clarify.
    * Waymark Name:
    The name of the waymark should include the name on the plaque. Example the plaque at the Melbourne Cricket Ground could be The MCG Plaque.
    * Two photos:
    A photograph of the object/place and then a general view of the area with it in the picture.
    * Coordinates: You must have personally obtained the location co-ordinates with you GPSr.
    * Marker Text: Please include any text on the marker plaque in your description, stating it in quotes. Exceptions will be granted if the plaques are clearly legible in the photographs.
    * Permission: Please respect private property and seek permission if it is in an indoor setting.
    * Long Description and Attributions: It is necessary to include as much information about your submission as possible together with any credits or links.

    As note about the naming convention you propose. I would recommend "Melbourne Cricket Ground" be the name and not have it shortened to MCG. Many categories use a naming convention that includes the name and city/region so if I happen to find one here in Oregon USA it might be named something like... Australian Sheepherders Hut 1889 - Harney County, Oregon. Long but descriptive.

    Great start. Looking forward to seeing it in peer review. Good luck.

    To add something new (because I agree with the above)...

    If possible, please include a list of links so people can do some research before hand.  Is there an official ministry devoted to national historic sites that issues "official" plaques?  Does Sydney or any other major city have historic preservation commission that lists their sites?  Some of the best databases for waymarking are geocaching bookmarks.  Do you know of any bookmarks themed to Australian historic sites?

    Basically, give visitors a database as a starting point so they do not have to find one by chance.
