• Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

Just a friendly rant at our neighbors: when entering a new WM, why there is Germany at the top of the country list and Czech Republic is not? There are 1844 Czech waymarks and just 1643 German ones. Not to mention Brazil (3778) and Netherlands (3655).

  • Re: Waymarking Release Notes 10/29/2009

Some variable-related side effects I have noticed:Yes/No (used to be a single checkbox defaulting to No) has been changed to Yes/No/I don't know radio buttons. If I make the variable non-optional, it offers just Yes/No, but there is no default. Waymarks posted in the past have this variable set to Not Listed instead of No.Dropdown boxes and ratings

  • Re: Any Ideas on where to find more info?

There is no comet it is an angel sitting on a rock. This is what I googled out: the name of the mural is ''Anděl a Komediant'' - ''An Angel and a Comedian'', painted in 1993 by Milivoj Husák. The tower belongs to the theater ''Divadlo Na Provázku''.EDIT: ''Na Provázku'' means ''on a rope'' so the mural is probably a word play with the theater ...

  • Re: Czech Geodetic Points

This is what I wrote into my decline log - sorry that the e-mail didn't reach you:===Sorry, this is not a geodetic point - this sign means that a water or gas pipeline is buried there, and how deep, I don't know the exact meaning of the numbers. The geodetic point would usually have a red&white pole and a granite block - see the other ...

  • Re: What catagory do I slam this big square peg into??

Yes, this is a well known concrete mixing plant near Brno city and the Austrelitz battlefield from the Napoleon wars. The company has several creative factories around CZ, and their trucks are also a piece of art. See more pictures at www.zapa-beton.cz.

  • Re: Help with translation please?

You're welcome. Let me know if you find any other interesting memorial in a Slavic language :)I've checked WM787Z, nice one. Perhaps ''St. Michael's Society'' would be better than ''Brotherhood'', if such an organization exists - ''Towarzystwo'' can be anything like Association, Company, Brotherhood.

In eternal memory of World War Veteranson 36th anniversary of founding St. Michael Brotherhoodon 10th anniversary of free PolandThe Brotherhood erects this memorial with the former chaplain A. Gorskion 30th May, 1928I googled for ''Towarzystwo Świętego Michała'' and didn't find any information about that brotherhood, just references to some books ...

  • Re: New Category Proposal: Blacksmith Shops

Most of the blacksmith shops here specialize in handmade gates and fences - a quick google search for ''kovarstvi'' turned out eg. www.hefaiston.cz or kovani.vyrobce.cz.BTW, this weekend there will be an international blacksmith event here in CZ.I wouldn't worry about too little prevalence, just don't think there would be very pictorial waymarks ...

  • Re: Cat Proposal: Geek History?

Not global :) Not that I would care much - I don't have a problem with architecture styles or history markers limited to one continent. Wondering if local geek/computer history locations would apply? First installations of URAL2 computers around Czechoslovakia?Factories making VAX clones in Eastern Bloc?First Slovak FidoNet node?

  • Re: Tearooms anyone?

Yes, there were total 79 votes, 6 voters abstained and 1 voted Nay, that seems pretty good. Thanks everybody who participated. Some comments:- Will you accept at tea house that just happens to sell bubble tea, too, along with the regular teas?- I think there is still a great deal of subjectivity as to what will meet your definition of a qualifying ...

  • Toposcopes?

Just saw a new category in Peer Review: Toposcopes. From the description it wasn't too clear to me how they differ from eg. compass roses, so I googled for ''toposcope'' and found this Wikipedia entry.I guess creating a category should involve more effort than copy&paste from wiki

  • Re: Tearooms anyone?

It took some time but Tearooms and Teahouses cat is finally in peer review now, please check it and vote.I hope the description is clear enough (I like the loose leaf criteria provided by DopeyDuck).Any suggestions are welcome in peer review comments, I'll post a summary of comments here when the vote is over.

  • Re: Next Site Update - Orphan Waymarks and Points

I admit I've got mixed feelings about this proposed change. If there would be one flat queue for all potential waymarks, I don't think there would be anyone browsing through it and helping with all submissions. The original poster should at least pick a broader group (Nature / Structures / Business / etc.), then the ''categorizer'' who is expert in ...

  • Cannot edit a new category

Today our Tea Leaf Friends group reached the necessary number of three officers, so I started making a draft for the category. I filled some text into the description, edited it a few times, created some variables, and then got to the point when clicking on the category link gives the ''Your request has resulted in an error'' page and any changes ...

Sorry, I don't go into wm forums that often, just today I saw two strange categories in peer review and went to check if there is anything about them here, and saw that my thread is active.About variables - I also prefer free approach, almost anything can by included in the text. The posting instructions should include some guidelines (''if you ...

  • Tearooms anyone?

Wondering if there would be any interest in Tearooms category?I like them (eg. the place where this perpetual GC event took place last two years) but if there are any tea experts I'd leave the group leadership to them. Personally I visited tearooms only in the US and here in Czech Rep., the wikipedia entry looks like there should be potential ...

Two more European benchmarking categories:Czech Republic:Czech Geodetic PointsFrance:French BenchmarksAs an officer of the Czech group, I was just reading the peer review comments: there were some Nay votes with comments like ''not global'', ''just a handful of waymarks in a small country'' etc. IMHO it is good to have a local category, I hope it ...
