fishingwishing:I'm up for the challenge - let's give it a go, David! A lot to think about here and excellent input. TheBeanTeam posted some really nice links! You can even browse some of the catalogs online.I think I'll start a group but I'm not sure what the focus will be, so I think a generic group name is in order until we can ...

I see they faced the same problems! I tried to see if a group had been started and could not find one so I guess it just came to an end at that time.Would anyone be interested in joining a ''Kit Homes & Buildings'' group and maybe see if we could come up with something? Thanks

globetrotters.us:
I would propose that houses that didn't have any formal documentation, just 'word of mouth' and a photo that matched one with formal documentation be allowed, with a disclaimer that said how it was derived. This way, there would be a starting point for someone with a real interest to do more research. It's easier to archive a ...

Some good discussion here. Reading on the page fishingwishing linked to it states: ''More than 80% of the people who think they have a Sears Home are wrong.
There are many reasons for this, but put simply, there were several
other companies selling kit homes on a national level, such as Gordon
Van Tine, Aladdin, Lewis Homes, Harris Brothers, ...

fishingwishing:Hmmm, this definitely isn't a 'point and shoot' category but I personally think it has merit. Probably would require some serious homework (see http://cdm.digitalpast.org/cdm4/exhibits/MailOrderHouses/Documentation.html for ideas to find out if a home is a Sears Home) but 100,000 definitely fits the ...

You are both correct, Sears Homes are listed under the Secretary of the Interiorโs Standards for Rehabilitation Guidelines, but I have been unable to find a list of such homes known. It would be nice to have a list of homes such as The Historic United Methodist Church category has, that makes it easy to confirm and make reference to.Perhaps someone

According to the Sears Archives about 70,000 to 75,000 of these homes were ordered through the Sears Catalog between 1908-1940. This website Sears Homes.org says: ''Sears Homes came in 370 different designs and they sold about 75,000 of them, throughout the United States.
Today, about 90-95% of these homes remain standing. Sadly, when ...

Perhaps new categories should automatically be made visible as soon as they are approved regardless of settings or as to when the category was actually created. I know people tweak them after reading the comments from peer review but if a category is being altered for that reason, submitted waymarks could be put on hold and reviewed after any last ...

Redneck Parrotheads:How's about a category that includes all railroad parts on display?
I found these things not too long ago:
I believe the category will only be for MOW related equipment, that which actually maintained the rails. Signals and what you have there (still not sure what) were stationary. Perhaps a separate railroad operations

I really don't have a problem with any religious screen names as long as no one is trying to convert someone by using the forums. This is for waymarking and related subjects and is not the place for it. I do think people today are too easily offended. Globetrotters is right that introducing religion can be like throwing a monkey wrench into a well ...

Thanks for filling us in on the info Steve & family! A screen name is a personal decision and can often reflect someones convictions.

Hmmm what is it you have there and are they actually on display or remains of what used to be there? It almost appears to be some type of generator or motor. I have thought some too about different railroad equipment. I know of a restored depot in Alabama that has several types of signals on display outside. I don't believe they have any markers or

Hello I've created a new group and in need of officers.description/mission statement:
A
group for railroad maintenance of way ''MOW'' equipment on display. To
create a category for equipment that maintained the rails for the
safety of its passengers and employees. Speeders aka.(Putt-Putts),

Looks good, it gets my vote! I didn't know Bill Griffith created some of the Wacky Packages. That was a big thing to collect back in my school days, sure wish I had them now.

Sounds like it will be a fun category! Plus it has the potential to be a universal one as well. .......there's treasure to be found on this little island!

silverquill:How many have given up geocaching for waymarking? Or, at least for whom has waymarking become their first love in the GPS games? The family and I started out Geocaching in 2005 and since discovering Waymarking have done very little Geocaching. In 2008 we only logged two visits and posted one note for a cache that had been ...

Great list Bruce! I had even placed a few waymarks for I believe Alabama and listed them by mistake to Georgia then catch and correct it. I need to check and make sure all are correct, you can place a waymark in any country or state regardless of the coordinates given. Maybe a future version would make it so you can't do that. If the cords ...

Thanks BeanTeam! Interesting how did you come across this one? Out of the way, but certainly not inaccessible. Its at a point now where you almost hope it does not get any visits so it can maintain its record. There is a cache nearby that has had visits as recent as Sept this year. I guess none of the geocachers were waymarkers as well.

This is not so much of a statistic, but what about a list of waymarks that have been on for the longest period of time and still have not had a single visit logged.

Could I get permission to copy and use some of the images for the category description? With credit of course plus you can still add the waymark if it becomes a category. Thank you.

fatcat161:Would you allow the Screw on the Queen Mary? It's still on the ship, still in the water but viewable to visitors as a display.
FatcatGood question. That would have to be discussed with the group officers when creating the category to see if they would be allowed attached. That would also bring up the question of aircraft props still ...

silverquill:Sounds interesting! Drawing the line between small/common decorative displays and what you might really want cold be tricky. They might need to be different for ship screws and plane propellers. But, I think this category idea has merit! I'd be glad to lend a hand to get the screws turning!Where to draw ...
