There's always the possibility the typo could be fixed. I'm guessing a few small-business owners might view people stopping to photograph their sign/typo as a bad thing.

the blue quasar:...The downside is that there would be SO MANY people there, Groundspeak might be like a wedding reception line. BQ
I think you're right. We went to Groundspeak HQ last year, and we were one of *two* groups there. We actually had time to chat with Bryan, OpinioNate, Annie, and the folks. I can't imagine what the GW8 herd would ...

Redneck Parrotheads:
...Fast food is where it's at... but I think that's another can o' worms. ;)
My thoughts exactly. Most fast-food franchises serve food that tastes like earthworms. The new ''Dirt-burger'' at McDonalds is a perfect example.

northernpenguin:Well, it seems the waymarking Gods are not without irony..... Human Error passed Peer Review, and, after making a few adjustments to the category description from some of the constructive peer votes (I *always* read them!)... I hit that ''Activate'' button. Guess what comes up now when I try to view the category ..... Your ...

TheBeanTeam:Pretty much. There was an interim transition where Groundspeak helped users set up Historical Marker categories for their particular location/area. After this phase the forum proposals seemed to pick up. In regards to waymarking being and experiment. I think that it is still and experiment. Every category is an experiment to see if it ...

I do not think this should be a category for the same reason I disapprove of Illuminated School Sports Fields. We shouldn't be waymarking schools. In this day and age of information it is probably a mute point anyway.
Darn that National Register of Historical Places, making schools vulnerable just ...

Count me among the many supporters of this new category. One question, though: I read the description, and didn't see anything about the percentage of the animal that needs to be at the ''kill'' site. There's about 40% of a skunk on a street near my house. Is that enough?

globetrotters.us:
I would caution people to give valid feedback on the decline, reguardless of whether you think it a joke or not.
It could be a real beginner, and some of the typical feedback responses could turn them off to waymarking forever, when it would be a good place to give direction.
That's probably the best advice I've heard. ...

saopaulo1:
...It's all subjective.
I'll go along with that. How ''McDonald's'' ever became a category is beyond me. Personally, their food is enough to make me turn vegan. But that horse left the barn long ago, and there's still plenty of people who *do* like their stuff. Retail categories... big yawn.
But, that's another discussion for ...

Hey, I'm thinking one of the recent categories just changed its name. If I'm not mistaken ''State Park Passport Locations'' was originally ''Non-NPS Passport Locations''. Something like that. Anyway, I've got a related question: some of the lighthouses on the west coast have a passport-type stamp program. Since the lighthouse group is national, ...

Hmmn. I'm working on a Wherigo right now that incorporates several waymarks. Here's how it works: the player is a would-be thief out to steal a priceless sculpture. In the game, I have the player wander around six different outdoor sculptures (each of which is a waymark). In the end.. well, I'm still working on the ''final act.''
Anyway, it ...

BruceS: Wampa-One:Maybe the Seattle Art & Seek Category set a bad precedent then? I was not around then, so I don't know the history of how it came to be. Maybe since it is in the Games Department it is somehow different? The Seattle Art & Seek category was a special category set up by Groundspeak and the City of Seattle. ...

This sounds like an excellent category. I remember seeing many examples of such art in Washington, D.C. The trick, as always, is to come up with a good description. Best of luck with this one.

This thread is right on the money. Far too many WMs have little or nothing in the long description field. Granted, it's pretty hard to write something meaningful about the nearest burger chain or coffee spot. Still, it's not terribly hard to write at least a sentence or two about a location. If nothing else, go for the humor: ''Yep, it's ...

northernpenguin: TheBeanTeam:All that said I agree that the Flash Mob thing is something better handled elsewhere.I'm chuckling sitting here wondering what the security guards would think of 1,000 people showing up at the same time, holding their gps out in front of them and taking a photo, then leaving. Not that we're likely to find 1,000 ...

Having walked into (literally!) a ''critical mass'' event in San Francisco, I can appreciate what a true flash mob is like. Now *that's* how it should be done. IMHO, most geocaching flash mobs are rather simplistic affairs with almost no resemblance to the original concept. Standing around or taking a picture hardly qualifies ...

Hmmn. Waymarking events.. sounds like a fairly logical idea, doesn't it? Part of me thinks it's dependent on geography and ''critical mass.'' I live in a very densely populated area. Orange County, California has almost 3 million people (and lots of geocachers). I'd be surprised, however, if a WM event had 6 attendeees. WM'ers are ...

Mine was the Great Park in Irvine, CA (WM2GRX) back in November 2007. I remember thinking at the time ''a geocache shouldn't go here.'' It was then I seriously thought about Waymarking as a cool alternative. ;-)

Good point. I'd agree that a lab (like Edison's) would get just one WM. After all, the number of patents that come out of certain labs is surely quite large. And yes, many inventions are the result of corporate research, but the locations would have to be open to the public. That doesn't mean corporate locations can't be waymarked. A family member ...

Good question about the Elvis example. To be honest, I'm not sure. I'd want to give that one some serious thought. Maybe ask some of the Elvis WM-ing folks. ;-) And yes, we'd want an official and accurate list. Definitely!
Oops! Forgot to mention: the updated category listing is in peer review right now.

Alrighty, I've re-written the category proposal. I've included lots more detail, a few what-ifs, and several specific examples of awards on display. The new listing also includes a list of international awards. It's in officer vote right now, but peer review is right around the corner. Sooo... as any good politician is likely to say this time of ...
