Silverquill's concern in another thread: ''Of course we need to keep in mind that photos from visits are added to
the single gallery. In some ways this is nice, and in some ways not.
There seems to be no way to tell which ones belong to the original
waymark and which ones are part of a visit. Sometimes that makes it
look as ...

I have tried to upload photos many times using my fiance's dialup connection - it almost never works - does exactly what you describe, kicks me back to the blank form. I have tested this problem from there using jpegs from 1 meg, thru 185 kb, right down to a 5 kb test image. Same result. And, I tested her connection with her older desktop, and with

As a suggestion to encourage visits to waymarks, can that section of a waymark page be enhanced beyond the current ''tiny'' aspect? I suggest that the visit log shows in the expanded form, in a font/format comparable to the rest of the page, and HTML enabled for images, limited to one or two...I would like to see the visit images entries and ...

I stumbled across this thread and after reading for a bit, went off to find the aerials of the shrine. As founder of the ''readable from above'' category, and after viewing the site with 3 different lookups (lookdowns?) those being Google maps, Bing! and Terraserver, none of the images would give enough resolution to make the words actually ...

We have the ''Kissmobile'' category, but the ''Wienermobile'' has been around much longer. I intend to start this category. With me, or not? Nuff said here.

Burlington, VT and Manchester, NH both have this. Merchants usually display these prominently on-site and in their advertising. In Burlington, Ben and Jerry received one of these while still just two bohemians working out of a 'barely renovated' former gas station - I worked at the restaurant that existed right next door (Carbur's). Now the ...

team farkle 7:Sorry,
a bit slow on the uptake, I guess, but how would this differ from Satellite Imagery Oddities?I really don't see much crossover - wording (only) does not rise to the level of an 'oddity' in my opinion. Thanks for the question.

(Re: ''It's a logo, but it's also a complete word.'')The Ford logo seems acceptable to me, your reasoning is sound. It, and other 'word features' like it might get a chuckle from others who, like yourself were not aware they existed until Google maps/earth etc. made them visible. Thanks for the interest.

Here's another variation I personally experienced: planned to visit a theme park on vacation, read the WM, programmed the coordinates into the thingy, followed them through 3 states, to an empty parking lot in a commercial development...not a soul around (sunday). But, the street name matched the info on the listing...hmmm. Found the place (the ...

I submitted photos to the 'carniverous trees' category of an oak tree that grew together with a hemlock tree, such that it looked like the oak was actually biting the hemlock - even chewing on it. This was denied, because the category is written to include only trees that are devouring 'man-made' items - and I believe this would make a great post ...

First, thanks to all for the gracious handling of this request; your input is helpful and appreciated.By following your hints, it occurs to me this category would have to step carefully on several issues, - and it therefore becomes quite narrow - and the theory of diminishing returns was looming. BUT:Since you have been generally positive in your ...

My uncle owned an airport in Paramus, NJ in the '30s and pointed out several of these to me as a child - it seems these were the 'original' waymarks for aviators, marking the names of towns (and some advertising) just to be visible from the air. That's where the idea comes from. I wasn't aware that there are sites that offer this type of thing -- ...

With the
increasing use and accessibility of aerial/satellite views as a mapping
and navigating tool, comes a neat surprise: There are places where
names of places, companies or structures are readable from above -
sometimes painted on surfaces (roofs, etc.) or created through
landscaping (shrubs, rocks, grass). Example -- if you go to N ...

On our way to somewhere else, but you know how it goes - I point and holler ''Waymark!'' the wife groans, ''I suppose.''The trip is taking longer, I think it's causing stress;but she's smiling when i get back in the Jeep, and I can't find my GPS...

Yes - I had that concern, and I gave it some thought - It seems to me that two different cultures are involved - those who do the carving, and ''us'' waymarkers who would show more concern for the living things. Thus, very few, if any ''carvers'' would ever see a Waymark posting (and few of those would see that as spurring them to do new ...

I recently stumbled upon a large tree with hundreds of old carvings in the smooth bark - initials, symbols, words, etc. I have a couple good hi-res photos of it, and (of course) it occurs that there must be others like it scattered around - perhaps some that YOU remember marking? The category would recognize the carvings for quality, ...

I found out, through much trial and error, the problem was my DIALUP and/or my ISP - The same pages and photos that would NOT load over dialup would load instantly over a high-speed wifi connection. As for the technical reason behind this, I can't help... anyone?
